hua hin in the running to be asian race hub

hua hin, THAILAND Hua Hin is already many things to many people, and soon to be added to the list, if one expert is to be believed, is as a centre of excellence for motorsports. An ambitious plan has been hatched to convert the existing facilities into an unrivalled base for both training future track stars and hosting racing events. Taket Hemichi is a Thai-Japanese motorsports expert who claims that Hua Hin is an ideal location to hold top class motorsports events, possibly even Formula One. As he explains, most of the necessary ingredients are already present for the race track itself; “First you have the virtually unused Hua Hin Airport - this will easily be adapted so that the runway becomes the start/finish straight and the pit lane alongside; at the northern end of the runway it is elevated above both the main Petchkasem Road and the railway line, and all that will be needed is the construction of the ‘Palm Hills Bend’, a right hander that will curve back over the railway and then join the Phetchkasem Road going south. The cars would then travel under the start/finish straight through the existing tunnel and onto another fast straight before diverting onto the existing Go Kart Hua Hin track (to be named the Go Kart Hairpin); a newly constructed bridge (the Hilton Flyover) would then take them back onto the start/ finish straight - it would be like a classic figure of eight track from the old days.” Mr Hemichi went on to tell us that this also explains the construction work on the Canal Road, as this would be designed to take the traffic that normally uses that stretch of Phetchkasem Road. We asked the proprietor of the Hua Hin Go Kart track, Mr Neil Heron, what he had heard of these plans, and he responded by saying, “Eh, eh, calm down - give us a beer and I’ll tell you everything I know.” As it stands there is no evidence to suggest that there will be a top class motor race anywhere in the area, anytime within the next four years.
