couple slain at resort british expat and thai wife murdered in thap sakae
hua hin, THAILAND An elderly British man and his Thai wife were robbed and beaten to death by three men, including a chef and a security guard, at a beach resort in Thailand, police said Wednesday. A worker at the Jack Beach Resort in Thap Sakae district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province, about 100 kilometres south of Hua Hin, found the badly beaten bodies of Michael Raymond, 68 and Suchada Baokhamdee, 52, Tuesday afternoon in their beach front bungalow. The couple had checked in at the resort on the Gulf of Thailand a day earlier. “They were beaten with a chair and other hard objects,” case officer Captain Winai Raila-aied said. Police have arrested three Thai men, including two resort staff and a villager, who all confessed to robbery and murder. “At first two suspects -- a chef and a security guard -- admitted they had robbed the couple of 2,000 baht (£43), a mobile phone and a Bangkok Bank ATM card,” Winai said. “Now all three have confessed to their wrongdoing”. Police named the confessed killers as security guard Pongpitak Tapsawang, 29, and cook Prajak Maunjinka, 50. Fisherman Jakkarin Auyen, 30, is believed to be the third suspect. A maid went to the room on Tuesday at 3.30pm after the couple failed to appear. The body of Mr Raymond, dressed only in brown shorts, was found near a sofa with his face and head savagely beaten. His wife, dressed only in a pink top, was found with similar wounds near the refrigerator. Winai added that Mr Raymond had lived in the northeastern Thai province of Khon Kaen for two years since he got married. A spokesperson for the Jack Beach Resort said: ‘’We are shocked and horrified. This has always been a safe place. We have often left doors open, without fear of robbery. Now we will have to reassess the casual holiday way.’’ CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

The 17-bungalow resort on the Gulf of Thailand has been open for seven years. The couple had checked in just for the one night, the spokesperson said. Prachuab Khiri Khan Governor Veera Sriwattanatrakul said that the gruesome murder badly tarnished the province and its tourism business. Resorts in the province should from now on be equipped with security cameras to ensure safety and help police if crimes occurred. AWOL SAYS: The increasingly battered reputation of the safety of Thailand for foreigners has taken another blow with this horrific attack, although great kudos should go to the police for their quick work in apprehending the alleged culprits. What is needed now though is for these murderers to be dealt with quickly by the Thai legal system and be made an example of, with the harshest possible penalty imposed, regardless of the fact that they have made confessions. While violent crime is a fact of life the world over, it appears to be an increasing menace in Thailand, although it could just be better or less restricted reporting of it here. Either way, the tourist business and related sectors are being affected, and the perpetrators of such crimes need to be very visibly punished to both deter others and restore foreigners’ confidence.

Just as they reached the first tee, a beautiful young blonde woman carrying her bag of clubs approached them. All eyes were fastened on her shapely behind as she bent to place her ball on the tee. She then took her driver and hit the ball 270 yards down the middle, right in front of the green. The father’s mouth was agape. ‘That was beautiful,’ he said. The blonde put her driver away and said, ‘I really didn’t get into it, and I faded it a little.’ After the three guys hit their drives and their second shots, the blonde took out an eight iron and lofted the ball within five feet of the hole. The son said, ‘Damn, lady, you played that perfectly.’ The blonde frowned and said, ‘It was a little weak, but even an easy seven would have been too much club. I’ve left a tricky little putt.’ She then tapped in the five-footer for a birdie. Having the honors, she drove first on the second hole, knocked the heck out of the ball, and it landed nearly 300 yards away smack in the middle of the fairway.

It will get over that little hump and break right into the cup.’ The father knelt down and sighted the putt using his putter as a plumb. ‘Don’t listen to the kid, darlin’, you want to hit it softly 10 inches to the right and let it run left down that little hogback, so it falls into the cup.’ The old grey-haired grandfather walked over to the blonde’s ball, picked it up and handed it to her and said, ‘That’s a gimme, sweetheart.’ The blonde smiled and said, ‘Your car or mine?’ OLD AGE AND TREACHERY WILL OVERCOME YOUTH AND SKILL EVERY TIME!

Quidditch, the fictional ball game from the Harry Potter books, is now being played in Britain. The first official match was held at the weekend and Keele University beat Leicester University 2-1. To play the game, opposing teams of seven have to put ‘quaffles’ into hoops while avoiding dodgeballs known as ‘bludgers’. His complex corkscrew machine uses two cannon balls, a clock spring and a steam engine to pour a glass of wine – and now stands to make its creator a pretty penny. The mind-boggling machine has already been sold to a six-star hotel for £100,000. Mr Higgs, from Penryn, Cornwall,
has also been commissioned to make 25 more of the machines so is sure to be raising a glass to his creativity. Mr Higgs, who describes his work as ‘being similar to Heath Robinson drawings’, spent four years building the prototype which has been branded a ‘fabulous talking point’. He said he was inspired by items in his grandfather’s workshop as a child and had spent most of his life creating wacky inventions. ‘The majority of the corkscrew machine is stuff that I found in places like scrap yards, car boot sales and antique fairs,’ he said. ‘I also have a workshop which has tons of hoarded rubbish and piles of junk. It’s a useful brain exercise because it gives you ideas. It’s like going to a library.’
