how safe do you feel? help us find out by taking part in the awol safety survey

hua hin, THAILAND Recent events in Hua Hin and Thailand have once again brought furrowed brows and thoughts of relocation to many expats here, as well as threatening to scare off more tourists. The savage murder last week of the couple in Thap Sakae follows the attack on Paul Ayling that left him in a coma, and the perception is that these types of violent crimes are on the increase. AWOL is running a survey from now until the end of April, printed in this week’s issue on pages 12 and 13, and can be filled in the old fashioned way and submitted either to our offices in Borfai or to the All Nations Guesthouse, or completed online at www.awolonline.net/surveys. The aim of the survey is to see whether the perception of crime and safety here is matched by the reality, taking a snapshot of how you all feel now as well as what your experiences are, and the aim is to do a follow up survey later to see if, when and how those perceptions and realities, and the picture may have changed. Sometimes headline grabbing stories can distort the true picture, and the fear of crime or other safety issues can create a problem where none truly exists. This process is not helped by the natural nervousness of authorities reliant on tourist cash who can be tempted to be a little reticent in releasing crime statistics at the same time as telling the world how wonderful things are, a tactic that does eventually backfire, because once half truths are discovered it is very hard to convince people you are telling the whole truth. Another side to this is also how slow the wheels of justice here turn, which also gives the impression that the courts are overwhelmed, which in turn appears to back up the idea that crime is on the increase; this may not be the case at all, and we want to hear your stories. Have you been a victim of crime? Has justice been served? Or have you never had any issues? Do you feel safe here? We want to know!

wife beating A wife comes home late at night and quietly opens the door to her bedroom. From under the blanket she sees four legs instead of two. She reaches for a baseball bat and starts hitting the blanket as hard as she can. Once she’s done, she goes to the kitchen to have a drink. As she enters, she sees her husband there, having a snack and reading a magazine. “Hi Darling” he says “Your parents have come to visit us, so l let them stay in our bedroom. Is that okay?” swanky restaurant My wife and I walked past a swanky new restaurant last night. “Did you smell that food?” she asked. “Incredible!” Being the nice guy I am, I thought, “What the heck, I’ll treat her!” So we walked past it again. Another blonde joke A road crew supervisor hired a nice-looking blonde woman to assist with painting the yellow line down the middle of the road. He was sceptical about hiring her but she appeared enthusiastic and told him that she really needed the job. He explained to her that her work day would be to complete 2 miles of line on her road. He set her up with her brushes and paint and got her started. After the first day, he was pleased to find that she did an excellent job and was able to paint 4 miles of road in her 8 hour shift. He told her that she did an excellent job and how pleased he was with her progress. On the second day, she completed painting 2 miles of road. Her supervisor was surprised that on day one she had completed twice as much work but did not say anything, as 2 miles of road was the amount that the job required anyway. He decided to just accept it and to look forward to the next day when he was sure she would pick up her speed again. On day 3 he was shocked to learn that in her 8 hour shift, she only completed painting 1 mile of road. He called her into his office and asked her what was the problem. “On your first day, you completed 4 miles of road, on your second day, 2 miles of road and now, on day 3, you were only able to complete 1 mile of road. Can I ask you, what is the problem?” Well, she replied, “I keep getting farther and farther from the paint can.”

New England Football Shirt Sponsors The Football Association today proudly unveiled Total, fcuk and UPS as the new sponsors of the England football team. ‘The combination of these three corporate giants perfectly captures the ethos of the England side,’ said an FA spokesman. ‘After all, they had nothing in the tank when it counted, and they’ve proved themselves to be a bunch of expensive posers who always fail to deliver.’ The new shirts come in a range of bright ‘easy to spot’ colours after claims from England players that the old kit was painted in ‘magic invisible ink’ which made it impossible to pick out an easy and obvious pass to a team mate. The new shirts are also made of a super lightweight material, unlike the old tops which were apparently made of extra-heavy chain mail which left the Premiership stars lumbering around looking exhausted and unfit. However, one criticism has been made of the design of the new England kit with claims that the neck hole was inexplicably too small for the heads of the Premiership stars. Players say this will make it very hard to pull the shirt off during an over-exuberant goal celebration, but a spokesman for the manufacturers said ’we don’t envisage this being a problem.’ 9

football is shocked “As soon as it happened we could all tell something was seriously wrong, the ground fell silent and we just watched as it unfolded. Some of the fans were crying and holding each other. The rest just couldn’t believe it was happening” said Di Matteo after Fernando Torres scored.

Renfrewshire, Scotland Scottish tea company brewing up success by exporting to China A tea maker could be the world’s best sales person after managing to flog hundreds of orders of her luxury brew to China - where they have been drinking cups of the stuff for over 5,000 years. Anita Clark, of Renfrewshire, Scotland, recently shipped 200 orders of her high quality product to the ‘home of tea’. Her new customers like it so much that she has already secured a second order from a Chinese firm for more batches of her delicious brew. Miss Clark admitted that she never expected her product to be a hit in East Asia, revealing: ‘Never in my life did I think I would be selling tea to China. It is known around the

world as the place from where the first cuppa originated - the home of tea, if you will. And even now a lot of tea comes from China. But I was told by a representative of this company that they struggle to get the kind of higher quality flavoured tea that I stock in their own country.’ China is known as the homeland of tea where Chinese Emperor ShenNung is believed to have drunk the first cuppa over 5,000 years ago. the world Gnome sent around the world to show how gravity changes near equator A globe-trotting garden gnome has been used to demonstrate why Britons weigh more than Mexicans. Kern has been packed off with a set of super-accurate scales of the same name to show how an object’s

weight varies around the planet. So far the bearded model weighed more in London than anywhere else on Earth apart from the South Pole. In Antarctica he weighed 309.82g, while in London he tipped the scales at 308.66g. But he was a svelte 307.62g in Mexico City and just 307.56g in Mumbai, which are both are much closer to the equator. British scientist James Nester, who helped conceive the Gnome Experiment, said: ‘Most people don’t realise the strength of the Earth’s gravitational pull differs around the globe. This is mainly due to variations in the shape and density of the planet. Believe it or not, the Earth is actually slightly potatoshaped so you’ll actually weigh up to 0.5 per cent more or less, depending on where you go.’

property for Rent Live Rent-Free in Hua Hin? It’s a possibility if you are easy-going, trustworthy, and like dogs. I have more house than I need. Lately, I travel a few days each month. My dogs hate to be alone. I’m near the beach (North), outside the center of town (but not too far) and it’s a very quiet area. The quid pro quo is that you help take care of the dogs, especially when I’m away, and help me keep the house up. (If you’re handy, it’s a plus). If this sounds like a fit for you, for a few weeks, months, or years, get in touch with me at garyhall771@gmail.com. Cheers. Beautiful 3 Bed - 2 Bath Villa For Rent - Hua Hin. Sleeps 6. Featured Game Sunday, 25 march 2012 scottish premier Rangers v Celtic 19:00 A rather odd Old Firm derby with Celtic already crowned Champions and Rangers battered by off the field financial problems. Much as both sets of fans would hate to admit it though, both teams need each other to be competing, as does the Scottish Premier League. This game is all about pride but we think Celtic will take that as well.

have they gone? bilbao, spain THE exit of Manchester from European competition has allowed for the removal of plastic sofa covers and the appearance of the good cutlery. The remaining clubs in the Europa League will also be able to unlock their drinks cabinets and put out their nice things without fear of them being stolen. A spokesman for Athletic Bilbao said: “A couple of years ago we noticed this large, yellowy-brown stain on the corner unit. Eventually we had to just throw the bloody thing out. Two grand it was. Blow that for a game of soldiers. “So we bought a new one but then we thought ‘we’re not having a repeat of The Stain’ so we got one of those plastic covers.
