results of the awol safety survey

hua hin, THAILAND Our latest survey has now finished, and while the response was quite small the results still make interesting reading. The vast majority of respondents were from people living here permanently (87.5%) in either their own home or a rented house, with 75% being male. All of those who responded were from either Australia or the UK originally. Thailand was regarded as a bit safer than elsewhere by 37.5%, a little less safe by the same number and about the same by a quarter. Hua Hin was regarded as the same or much safer than the rest of Thailand by 62.5%, with the remainder believing it is less safe. Most respondents based their answers on personal experience. Not surprisingly the area of most concern was safety on the roads, with over 75% regarding both Thailand and Hua Hin as less safe than elsewhere, and 100% when on a motorcycle. However 50% felt that you are safer at home here. Possibly the most damning response was how the police are perceived, with 75% feeling less safe in dealing with them in Thailand as a whole, and 50% much less safe in Hua Hin. Causes of crime in Hua Hin and Thailand were seen to be fairly evenly spread, with corruption regarded as the most common, and equal attribution to poverty, greed, racism, drugs, lack of education and unemployment. Avoiding confrontations and certain areas at night were voted as being the best advice to visitors here, while having an alarm system on your home was regarded as the best deterrent. Other deterrents favoured were having a dog, living in a gated community with security and avoid travelling alone. All respondents thought that reducing corruption and better law enforcement was the best way to reduce crime and improve safety. Nearly 40% were considering leaving because of their concerns over crime and safety, while half believe that these issues will stop tourists coming to Hua Hin.
