hua hin, THAILAND The annual shambolic preparation for the Hua Hin Jazz Festival is scaling new heights this year, following last year’s thrice moved event, which still attracted thousands of visitors to the town. At a time when the town could most do with the tourism boost the event brings, the dates for the 2012 festival have not been announced, even provisionally, and while it has already become an annual farce, this year is looking like topping the lot with regard to planning and promotion. We contacted last year’s organisers, Bangkok Fanatix, who we had been led to believe had been given a two year contract to organise the event, and were told by them that they would not be involved in this year’s festival ‘unless something changed significantly’. They did not directly expand on what they meant by this however, but it seems likely that last year’s problems with financing and coordination with the local authorities would have played a part in this. The tourist authority, TAT, informed us that they couldn’t give any comfirmed information, but that the festival ‘might be in the second weekend in June’. When we asked who was organising the event, we were told ‘Bangkok Fanatix’. For such a major event, not just for the town, province or country, but internationally, to be so poorly organised and promoted year in, year out is an absolute scandal, resulting in lost revenue for local businesses and an embarrassing stain on the town’s reputation, making it more difficult every year for anyone to organise and finance the festival. Will it happen this year? Based on previous experience, it probably will, but they are almost out of time, and it could be so much better.

pennsylvania, usa Police officer accused of breaking into neighbour’s house to do laundry An American police officer is under investigation after allegedly breaking into his neighbour’s house to do his laundry. Pennsylvanian police officer Jason Rocco is accused of breaking into his neighbour’s house through the back door before unloading his dirty washing. The startled homeowner returned to his property, on Marie Avenue in Avalon, to find his dryer switched on and running. He found a bundle of clothes inside the machine, including what appeared to be Mr Rocco’s Marine Corps T-shirts. The homeowner fears the rogue officer, who has been charged with trespassing and criminal mischief,
may have been breaking in regularly in his absence. He called in the police after later receiving an usually high electricity bill despite not having lived in the property for months. When questioned, Mr Rocco told officers that the door was already broken and that he ‘just had to do some laundry’. Those taking part had the chance to bob for pig’s trotters, throw themselves into mud pits and take part in toilet seat tossing in a bid to win one of the tournament’s beer can-shaped trophies. The Games began in 1996 - the year that the summer Olympics were held in Atlanta - and were created by a local radio broadcaster in response to a remark that the Games ‘were being held by a bunch of rednecks’. More than 5,000 people turned up to the first-ever Games, with a further 95,000 having attended in the past ten years.

Euro crisis escalates as playground value of England squad Panini stickers plummets
london, england With expectations of an England triumph at Euro 2012 at an all-time low, the swapsy value of Panini stickers featuring the 23-man squad has reached rock-bottom. Collectors have revealed their reluctance to buy stickers in the fear that they could end up with a Glen Johnson or an Andy Carroll, leading to fears that lack of demand could lead to a playground crisis. “With investment comes risk,” explained 8 year-old Ollie Hubbard. “When you buy stickers you’re hoping for a Van Persie or a Ronaldo, but there’s always the risk of ending up with a Stewart Downing.” “If that happens then you’re in a situation where you’ve got a holding you simply can’t shift.” “You always end up with multiple stickers of a particular player, and if that player is someone like John Terry then you’ve got a playground currency that you can’t even give away.”

Panini have revealed that they are considering a round of quantitative easing that will involve injecting large amounts of stickers from stronger squads such as Spain and Holland into newsagents. A Panini spokesperson revealed that the move would hopefully reduce the risk and therefore increase demand.
