concerns that 2008 attempted murder case is being derailed
hua hin, THAILAND A letter sent to the Bangkok Post last week from the victim of a shooting in Hua Hin in 2008 has revealed his fears that most of the alleged perpetrators are going to be allowed to walk free due to insufficient evidence, amid veiled suggestions of corruption. Donald Whiting was shot and partially paralysed outside his home in Hua Hin on 24th October 2008; in early 2009, following the intervention of then Prime Minister Abhisit, four people were arrested and charged for the crime, including the Thai wife of an English property developer here. Mr Whiting writes that he received a letter from one of those arrested, Yuthana Areesawat, claiming that his mother and sister are not safe and that he feared that he alone would now go down for the attempted murder, inferring attempts to corrupt the court into finding the others not guilty. Mr Whiting adds that the case was supposed to wrap-up on April 26th but that several key witnesses did not appear to testify. The trial has been extended for several months and the location moved to three other provinces so these witnesses can be found and made to testify, according to his letter. As an American citizen, Mr Whiting has asked his Embassy to assist him in ensuring a proper legal process ensues, and nearly four years on in such a high profile case it is of great concern that there are doubts over this. It must be hoped that Mr Whiting’s fears are groundless, and that justice will prevail.
