hua hin, THAILAND Most tourist hotspots around the world suffer from small groups of criminals intent on relieving honest people of their hard earned cash and valuables in some way or other, and this week’s ‘urging’ by diplomats from ten, mainly European, nations to the Thai government to tackle extortion and scams against foreign tourists in the kingdom is a reminder that we should all be on our guard against this possibility. Hua Hin does not have the same problems as the busier Phuket or Pattaya resorts do, but nevertheless scammers will still lurk here, both Thai and foreign, and there have been some notable, and unfortunate stories about these over the years here. Our headline evokes an old saying - ‘Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me’ - and we are hoping that this front page will help prevent anyone being fooled the first time. The Thai government have responded to the diplomatic message by promising to ‘devise measures to tackle the issue in a swift manner’ but to a large extent it is a very difficult problem for a country like Thailand to overcome without a sea change in both cultural attitudes and financial capabilities. We believe that while we have to hope that a change will eventually come, it is the duty of us all to inform and help ourselves and others in avoiding these situations. Information is king in this respect, and whether that is passed on by word of mouth or through internet forums, or via the pages of ours and other publications, it will always help. If you have been the victim of any criminal activity why not help stamp it out by warning others on the AWOL Forum of how it was carried out (although please stop short of naming individuals).

The ‘war path’ was also sometimes called the ‘warrior’s This week it is... triberg, Germany German mayor designates ‘more challenging’ parking spaces to men A German mayor’s controversial new parking policy has raised a few eyebrows after he designated the town’s ‘more challenging’ parking space to male drivers. Mayor Gallus Strobel hit the headlines this week after unveiling the new car parking plan for motorists in the small German town of Triberg. Under the new system, each space in the town’s main car park been painted with a male or female symbol, depending on its difficulty rating. While female drivers have been assigned wider and well-lit spaces located closer to the exit, male drivers will need to pull in at more difficult angles and avoid cement pillars. The 58-year-old mayor wants to ‘challenge political correctness’ with his new policy, claiming the tight spaces will be an ‘attraction’ for ambitious drivers. ‘Men are, as a rule, a little better at such challenges,’ the 58-year-old told German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. Strobel has denied the new policy is sexist towards women, claiming he has received mostly positive feedback for his ‘equal minded’ new parking programme.
He added: ‘Of course, there are also great women drivers! They are, of course, most welcome!’ The mayor also argues that the move has been good advertising for the town, while he has also been contacted by motorists interested in travelling to Triberg to take on the parking challenge. north carolina, usa Man demands pizza and to marry Paris Hilton in police stand-off A SWAT team negotiator had a little trouble meeting the demands of one man in a hotel stand-off with police after he requested Paris Hilton’s hand in marriage. While his first request for a tasty pizza was quite reasonable, Fredrick Denney’s second ultimatum to marry the famous socialite was a little trickier to negotiate. After barricading himself inside a North Carolina hotel, the 61-yearold reportedly threatened to open fire on police unless his demands were met. According to WCNC, officers were called to the address on Cecilia Alexander Drive, Belmont, at the weekend, responding to reports Denney had allegedly caused an unspecified disturbance at the hotel. Police cordoned off the area and were forced to shut down the second floor of the hotel in a bid to reason with Denny during a tense stand-off.

During the negotiations, which lasted for several hours, the suspect shunned the traditional demands for a getaway car and a bag of cash for the chance of a happy-ever-after ending with Ms Hilton. new season This now definitely going to start on Wednesday 18th July. However the fixtures had not been created at press time, so please contact the organiser for more information. The league is going to consist of just one division this time, with nineteen teams competing, playing each other home and away, so a total of 36 matches for each team. Unfortunately due to their being an odd number of teams, this also means that every week one team will not have a match, and this will also result in the season being (at least) 38 weeks long. This will lead to the last match day of the season as 3rd April 2013, not allowing for any breaks, scheduled or otherwise.
