you ain’t seen nothing yet! it’s all for charity, mate! hua hin, THAILAND Local radio shows aimed at an English speaking audience have come and gone over the years, for varying reasons but predominantly the difficulty the foreign DJs had in obtaining the necessary paperwork.

Now a phoenix has risen from the flames and a new permanent radio show, in English, is being broadcast every day on Hua Hin Sky Web Radio, frequency 98.25 FM. The show is on live between three and four o’clock every afternoon, and recorded re-runs will be aired at other times. Anyone who wishes to see the show in action just has to head down to Market Village and go to the third floor - the DJ booth is next to the escalators nearest to the cinema. The broadcasts will also be available via the radio station’s website at www.huahinskyweb.net.

The DJ in question is Phil, from the UK, who also sings in the band at Music Station (see ad page 2), and can be found there every night from 7pm onwards. His radio show is currently focusing on the myriad of charity work being done in and around the town, and he encourages anyone involved in a good cause to come down and talk about it on air.

AWOL is fully supportive of this, and would equally like to encourage anyone involved in such work to tell us about it, so we can feature your organisation in the paper. When possible we will give regular space in the paper to promote worthy causes, as well as give front page coverage to fund raising events.

canada/usa Flea times tables as scientists teach insects how to count Fruit flies have been taught how to count in a study that could explain why some people are bad at maths.

Geneticists repeatedly subjected the insects to a test designed to teach them numerical skills and finally hit on a generation of flies that could count – after 40 attempts.

The findings could pinpoint the genetics of dyscalculia – a learning disability that affects a person’s ability to count and do basic arithmetic.

Tristan Long, a geneticist who worked on the study, said: ‘The obvious next step is to see how the flies’ neuroarchitecture has changed’ – though he admitted more work was needed to find out what the results actually mean and whether similar patterns could be found in humans.

Scientists taught the flies to count by exposing them to flashes of light during 20-minute laboratory tests.

The insects were left alone every time three flashes were made – but two or four flashes coincided with a shake of the box where the fruit flies lived.

The first 39 generations of flies were unable to prepare themselves for the shakes – failing to link the stimulation with the number of flashes of light.

Yet the 40th generation recognised that two or four flashes would result in them being roughed about, and they reared themselves in preparation for the disturbance, scientists reported.

The findings back up the theory that numerical skills such as mental arithmetic are ancient constructs.

The flies can now be added to the list of species to have developed numerical skills, including fish, chicks and bees, says the study which was carried out by the Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada, and the University of California.

Four worms were placed into four separate jars.

The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.

The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.

The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup.

The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.

At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results: The first worm in alcohol . . . . . . Dead .

The second worm in cigarette smoke . . . Dead .

Third worm in chocolate syrup . . . . Dead.

Fourth worm in good clean soil . . .

Alive .

So the Minister asked the congregation, “What did you learn from this demonstration?”

Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said . . .

“As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won’t have worms!”

She picked up four cans and took them to the check-out counter.

The girl at the cash register said, “I’m sorry, but we cannot sell you cat food without proof that you have a cat. A lot of old people buy cat food to eat, and the management wants proof that you are buying the cat food for your cat.”

The little old lady went home, picked up her cat and brought it back to the store. They sold her the cat food.

The next day, she tried to buy two cans of dog food.

Again the cashier said “I’m sorry, but we cannot sell you dog food without proof that you have a dog. A lot of old people buy dog food to eat, but the management wants proof that you are buying the dog food for your dog.”

So she went home and brought in her dog. She then was able to buy the dog food.

The next day she brought in a box with a hole in the lid.

The little old lady asked the cashier to stick her finger in the hole.

The cashier said, “No, you might have a snake in there.”

The little old lady assured her that there was nothing in the box that would harm her. So the cashier put her finger into the box and pulled it out. She said to the little old lady, “That smells like shit.”

The little old lady said, “It is. I want to buy three rolls of toilet paper.”

Women’s beach volleyball players have been advised not to wear tight fitting bikinis at the 2012 London Olympics.

Athletes in the event have worn skimpy swimwear since the sport was introduced at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Now the change has been made to reflect the cultural conventions of various participating countries and to deter English perverts from touching themselves whilst they are watching the action.

“Shorts of a maximum length of (1.18 inches) above the knee, and sleeved tops,” will now be worn, according to the new IOC ruling.

“It’s an attempt to broaden the diversity in the sport, which tends to be dominated by fit blonde Latvians and foxy Brazilians” said Olympic spokesperson Mabel Queen. ‘There are also concerns that the icy cold and wet British summer weather may have some spectators mistaking competitors for coat hooks”, Ms. Queen added.
