straight down the middle annual golf festival tees off hua hin, THAILAND It’s that time of year in Hua Hin when part time (or hard up) golfers grab their clubs with glee, while the regular and semi-pro players (and the course maintenance staff) weep at the slow play and course damage - yes, the Hua Hin Golf Festival is here once more!

Organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, in co-operation with several other interested parties, it allows golfers the opportunity to play golf at any of the eight selected golf courses, throughout August and September, for only Bt800.

The eight courses involved are Banyan (032 616200), Imperial Lake View (032 456233 – 40), Springfield Village (032 709222) August only, Majestic Creek (032 619168 – 70, 081 942 3619), Sawang (032 562555 – 7), Palm Hills (032 442460 – 1, 032 520801 – 9), Kaeng Krachan (032 422145) and Royal Hua Hin (032 51 2475, 032 531070).

There are also invitations to compete in organised tournaments every Sunday for just Bt1,200 (includes caddy fee and dinner), with prizes for holes-in-one at designated holes on the last day of the festival, longest drive contests and an opportunity to shop for specially-discounted golf products with 10 to 30% reduction on Pro Shop prices at all courses.

Hua Hin has become a mecca for golf lovers, with over a dozen high quality courses either in the area or within easy reach, and at least three golf societies in operation (see page 23 for those we currently feature results from; if you belong to a society not featured please get in touch with us on info@awolonline.net to tell us about it). The annual golf festival is a welcome opportunity for visitors and residents alike to try out the range of courses available at affordable prices.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about.

This week it is... Sir Walter Scott There are many sources for the phrases and sayings Nor is Sir Walter regarded as the most highly innovative that colour our language. Shandong, china ‘Drowning’ inflatable doll sparks 18-man police rescue An inflatable doll floating in a lake sparked a dramatic rescue mission involving 18 officers after police mistook it for a drowning woman.

A team of police officers in Shandong province, China, rushed to the scene after receiving a call from a concerned witness about a lady in distress in one of the province’s lakes. According to RocketNews24, the team of 18 officers spent over 40 minutes battling to retrieve the life-like doll and bring it to shore.

The dramatic scenes attracted over 1,000 spectators according to local reports, with the large crowd blocking traffic and preventing rescue crews from reaching the scene. Officers were horrified to find when they finally managed to recover the body that they had in fact rescued an inflatable sex doll from the lake.

A shocked crowd quickly dispersed from the scene following the astonishing scenes, with some spectators covering the eyes of younger children who had waited to watch the events unfold.

Following the embarrassing rescue operation, officers said they were forced to act due to the toy’s similar size and appearance to an adult female. havana, cuba Cuban bar mixes world’s largest daiquiri cocktail A Cuban bar has made history after creating the world’s largest daiquiri cocktail (270 litres) in honour of its most famous customer Ernest Hemingway.

It took a team of ten bartenders and 55 volunteers to concoct the rum, lemon and sugar cocktail last weekend at the El Floridita tavern, Old Havana.

Standing on a wooden platform, two waiters continuously poured pitchers of the mixture into a 6.5ft tall cocktail glass as other members of the record-breaking team prepared the ingredients.

Floridita manager Anders Aranciba said: ‘We are very happy. It is a dream that we have wanted to make reality for more than a year. It is a distinctive experience in homage to the great daiquiri cocktail.’

The attempt also celebrated the 113th birthday of Nobel Literature prize winner Hemingway, a regular customer at the bar during his time living in Cuba. It was also staged to honour the 195th anniversary of the bar itself, where the cocktail was first thought to have been created.

Excited resident Ricardo Antonio Trujillo added: ‘This is great for three reasons. First because we are in the land of the daiquiri, we are in the home of the daiquiri and we are celebrating the birthday of Hemingway and Guinness record of more than 250 litres.’

tamworth, england Police order gardener to cut ‘offensive’ middle finger-shaped bush A hedge clipped to look like an extended middle finger has landed a gardener in trouble after police ordered the bush to be altered following a complaint. Warwickshire Police have told creator Richard Jackson his cheeky garden humour must be altered as it is considered a public offence. In response, neighbours in Tamworth, Staffordshire, have started a Save the Bush campaign.

‘I carved the bush into a middle finger eight years ago and there has only ever been one complaint about it, made recently,’ explained Mr Jackson.

‘I was contacted by the police and they said the council had been in touch because somebody had complained to them about it. Apparently, one person was offended by it and the police said it was a public order offence.’

He added: ‘I don’t intend to change it though - I’m not a trouble maker and I don’t want to offend anyone but at the same time, it’s been here for eight years and I don’t see why I should have anybody telling me what to change in my garden. If everybody else likes it and there’s only one complaint in eight years then I don’t think it is a public offence, as the majority aren’t offended.‘ Warwickshire Police said if they receive a direct complaint about the hedge they would deal with it proportionately.

A Loan Application A frog goes into a bank and steps up to the teller. He sees that her name is “Patricia Whack.” So he says: “Ms. Whack, I’d like to get a loan to buy a ticket and go on a long vacation.” Patti looks at the frog in disbelief and asks how much he wants to borrow. The frog says $30,000. The teller asks his name and the frog says that his name is Kermit Jagger and that it’s OK, he knows the bank manager. Patti explains that $30,000 is a substantial amount of money and that he will need to secure some collateral against the loan. She asks if he has anything he can use as collateral. The frog says, “Sure. I have this,” and pulls out a tiny pink porcelain elephant, about half an inch tall. Bright pink and perfectly formed. He hands it to the teller. Very confused, Patti explains that she’ll have to consult with the manager and disappears into a back office. She finds the manager and says: “There’s a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000. And he wants to use this as collateral.” She holds up the tiny pink elephant saying. “I mean, what the heck is this?” So the bank manager looks back at her and says: “It’s a knick knack, Patti Whack. Give the frog a loan. His old man’s a Rolling Stone.”

Daily, weekly or long term The Wedding Test I was a very happy man. My wonderful girlfriend and I had been dating for over a year, and so we decided to get married.

There was only one little thing bothering me. It was her beautiful younger sister. She was twenty-two, wore very tight mini skirts, and was generally bra-less. She would regularly bend down when she was near me, and I always got more than a nice view. It had to be deliberate, because she never did it when she was near anyone else.

The match format is also changing to resemble the Pool Billiard League played on Fridays, and will consist of four legs of 8 ball best of 3, two legs of 9 ball best of 5, and two legs of 10 ball best of 5.

The number of people per team is four (No restriction on nationality or gender) and the maximum number of teams for the league will be twelve.

ARSENE Wenger has revealed Arsenal’s entire kit cost him just £200 from the Highbury branch of Tesco.

The frugal trophy-dodger has insisted that expenditure has nothing to do with winning trophies and feels his decision to get the players to compete in black plimsolls rather than expensive boots will have no adverse effect on results.

Wenger said: “These new kits are just the same as the pricey ones only they haven’t got some fancy logo on them to hike up the cost.

“As I keep reminding the squad, it’s not a bloody fashion parade. Tesco didn’t have any tops left in red but black doesn’t show up the muck as much so it’s probably for the best.

“The waste of money in this game is absolutely shocking – I can’t believe the amount we chucked away on that isotonic rubbish last season when there’s a tap full of perfectly good water in the changing rooms. From now on anything over a tenner has to be okayed by me.”
