hua hin, THAILAND The children, parents and staff of the small but perfectly formed Halio School are putting on a mixture of an English-style fete, junble sale and American-style school party this Sunday 5th August in an effort to raise much needed funds. The fun starts at 11am and will continue until 5pm. The hope is that they can raise the 60,000 baht they require to provide a sports/playing field for the students at the school. The family fun day will have stalls set up by the children selling new and used books, toys, clothes and household items, as well as games, raffles, auctions & more. Refreshments, international & Thai food will be available. The HALIO School, which is located at the Highland Seaview Housing Project in Smorprong, was established in 1996 by Padma Fischer-White and four like-minded families. It is a community school run by parents for the benefit of their children and now provides Primary education for children aged 7 - 12 and Secondary (started this year) for children aged 12-18. There are currently around thirty students but these numbers are likely to increase as the Secondary program progresses. For details on how to find the school for this Sunday’s event, and for more information on the school itself, in the first instance please visit their website at www.internationalschoolhuahin.org; as it is a small selffunded school they have no administrative staff and everything is handled by the teachers and parents, so please do not make unannounced visits, although on Sunday all are welcome! ‘the squealing pig’ owner deported

hua hin, THAILAND Rumours and hearsay have been circulating on the sois for weeks, but it was confirmed this week that Jack, the owner of The Squealing Pig bar and guesthouse on Soi 102, has returned to the UK following the intervention of the UK’s Border Agency (UKBA). Jack, whose full name has been revealed as John Joseph Alty, had been detained in Bangkok at the Immigration Detention Centre since May, after being arrested at his business. Originally from Glasgow, he was escorted to Bangkok International Airport by immigration police at the weekend after the UKBA told Thai police he was suspected of being involved in human trafficking. Reports have appeared in two Scottish newspapers, The Herald and The Daily Record, with the original
source being Andrew Drummond*, the investigative journalist who lives in Thailand. According to these reports, the 57 year old returned to Britain “voluntarily” after paying for his own ticket while being held in custody. The UKBA sent a letter to Thai immigration officials outlining their suspicions, and also requested that the contents “remain confidential and not be released to a third party or the media”, a request that was ignored as details were given out at a press conference. According to the UKBA, Mr Alty was “currently suspected of involvement in the smuggling of Sri Lankan and Iranian nationalities into Australia and New Zealand. On several occasions people of these nationalities seeking entry to Australia and New Zealand have
attempted to travel on passports in the name of Alty.” The immigration police said that Mr Alty was deported because he was believed to be a danger to society. The fact that Mr Alty had previously been jailed in Australia for drugs trafficking and subsequently deported in 2007 back to the UK has been reported as being enough reason for the Thai authorities to have deported him, but friends in Thailand still tried in vain to prevent the action. The death of another British inmate, Richard Ian Cook, 28, who had been arrested and was awaiting deportation in connection with a raid on a Bangkok ‘boiler room’, was apparently what changed Mr Alty’s mind about fighting his case and accepting the deportation. * http://andrew-drummond.com/

Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. in the way we do now, and the term became established This week it is... Old chestnut A story that has been told repeatedly before, a ‘venerable’ in the common lingo thereafter. The ‘old’ was added joke. Hence, in extended use, anything trite, stale, or too later as an intensifier. In April 1896, the Ohio newspaper The Daily Herald took often repeated. The phrase has only an indirect association with chestnut it unto itself to explain the phrase’s origin. It published trees or their fruit. The derivation turns out to be a the following: William Warren, who had often played contender for old chestnut status itself. The story goes the part of Pablo, was at a ‘stag’ dinner when one like this: in 1816, a melodrama called Broken Sword, by of the gentlemen present told a story of doubtful age the playwright and theatrical manager William Dimond, and originality. ‘A chestnut,’ murmured Mr. Warren, was performed at the Royal Covent Garden Theatre, quoting from the play. ‘I have heard you tell the tale these 27 times.’ The application of the line pleased the London. Dordrecht, netherlands Dutch millionaire builds Noah’s Ark replica after flood dream A Dutch millionaire has built a full-size replica of Noah’s Ark after dreaming his hometown would be destroyed by a flood of biblical proportions. Designer Johan Huibers finally opened the doors of his astonishing craft, which took over four years to build, to members of the public this week on the Merwede River, Dordrecht. Using ancient dimensions set out in the Bible’s book of Genesis, the gigantic 137m x 21m ark also features its own ‘Bible museum’, complete with life-size plastic animals. ‘We want to tell people about God,’ the Dutchman, who worked with a team of 50 employees, said during construction. ‘We wanted to build something that can help explain the Bible in real terms.’ He added: ‘The wood is Swedish pine, because that’s the closest we think to the ‘resin wood’ God ordered Noah to use in the Bible. The animals are plastic and come from the Philippines.’ The project stems from a dream the 52-year-old had in 1992, in which his native Holland was flooded by the North Sea. ‘The next day I bought a book about Noah’s Ark,’ he explained. ‘That night while sitting on the couch with my kids, I looked at it and said: “It’s what we’re going to do”.’ Huibers, who claims to have been contacted by dozens of people interested in staying on board the ark, originally wanted to sail the tribute to the London for the Olympic Games. However he was forced to abandon the plans after Dutch authorities raised health and safety concerns about the proposed voyage. Mittenwalde, germany German town attempts to reclaim 450-year-old debt now worth trillions A 450-year-old debt could help one small German town pocket a monumental windfall running into trillions following the recent discovery of a long lost IOU certificate. The town of Mittenwalde could become one of the richest in the world if officials in Berlin were to pay back the long-outstanding debt. According to Radio Berlin Brandenburg, the certificate shows that Mittenwalde lent Berlin 400 guilders in 1562, to be paid back with six per cent interest per year. Today the original outstanding debt would stand at an estimated £87million, an amount which would run into ‘trillions’ taking into account inflation and interest. Historian Vera Schmidt, who found the slip in the town’s archives where it had been since 1962, believes the certificate remains valid. ‘In 1893 there was a debate in which the document was examined and the writing was determined to be authentic,’ Schmidt said.
Requests to settle the debt have been made by Schmidt and mayor Uwe Pfeiffer, however these appeals have so far been rejected. Berlin’s finance senator Ulrich Nussbaum, who met with the pair to discuss the debt, told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper: ‘This case shows that debts always catch up with you, no matter how old they are.’ aberdeenshire, scotland Performanceenhancing beer launched in opposition to Olympic sponsorship Just in time for the Olympics, Scottish firm Brewdog has unveiled its very own ‘performance-enhancing ale’ named Never Mind the Anabolics. The award-winning brewers will officially launch the 6.5% India Pale Ale on Saturday in opposition to the ‘shallow corporate sponsorship’ of the Games. Containing an array of banned Olympic substances, the limited edition beer will be available on draught at all Brewdog pubs and also sold in bottle online. ‘BrewDog has today unveiled a limited edition beer it hopes will undermine global sponsorship deals for this summer’s games, called Never Mind the Anabolics,’ the brewer said in a statement. ‘Designed to ‘unmask the corporate beast’ of the world’s biggest sporting event and highlight the shallow nature of sponsorship, the new beer contains creatine, guarana, lycii berries, kola nut, Gingko, matcha tea, maca powder and steroids – all of which are banned for professional athletes. ‘Never Mind the Anabolics takes its lead from the relentless marketing campaigns of global fast-food chains and international mass production breweries that replace the sporting spirit with a fast buck, a greasy burger and an ugly plastic cup of insipid, fizzy, yellow lager.’ Corporate sponsorship has dominated the headlines in the lead up to the Games, with London 2012 organisers keen to stamp out unofficial marketing linked to the event. Olympic boss Lord Sebastian Coe threatened to ban Pepsi t-shirts from the Games to protect official sponsors Coca-Cola, while Locog has moved to ban a host of other unofficial marketing campaigns. Brewdog co-founder James Watt, added: ‘It seems a beer laced with performance enhancing ingredients isn’t actually illegal, but it is definitely frowned upon. ‘Never Mind the Anabolics is a thorn in the side of the biggest corporate beast spawned this century. This is the craft beer community showing the sponsors of the games the finger in the best way we know how.’

With no option available our two hero’s crawl to another tent, even more gaudily decorated than the last. They beg the desert dweller for water. But he says that he only has strawberry jelly. In despair the parched two crawl to the last tent and repeat their desperate need to the occupant, only to find that he only has custard. The desperate pair crawl away across the scorching desert and as they crawl over the blistering sand, the second man says hoarsely: ‘That was a trifle bizarre’. the Queen inspects the troops The Queen is inspecting three armed forces personnel, one from each of her fighting forces. She asks each one what they would do if they woke up and found a camel spider in their tent on operations? RESULTS SU (Clansmen Bar) takes Ladies Singles Pool title The Clansmen Bar took first and third places in the Hua Hin Ladies Pool League when Su, beat Maria 9-3 in the final held at Jaew Bar in Soi 102 on Sunday July 29th. Nok, also of Clansmen Bar won the third place play off against Oy of Muan Bar in a very tight 7-5 win. This was revenge for Nok who lost the title in the final to Oy three seasons ago. The ladies pool season is nearing conclusion this season with only a couple of games left. The end of season presentation party will be held at Maria Bar in Soi 88 on Monday 20th August
