forgotteN Festival? will ‘jazz on the beach’ ever be seen again?
hua hin, THAILAND Last year saw the tenth year of the Hua Hin Jazz Festival, an event that had helped bring this town to the world’s notice, as well as contribute to the change from town to city and bring prosperity to many. This was, of course, secondary to the fact that every year we were getting top class international and Thai musicians playing at what was very loosely a jazz event and would more correctly be called a music festival. Last year was also the first time that the event was moved from it’s normal slot on the first or second weekend in June, to the last weekend in August, a move that was more likely forced than planned, due to the general election and rumours of funding problems. Planning has always appeared to be the Achilles Heel of the event, certainly as far as informing the potential festival goers of the dates and line up is concerned, and this year has proved to be no exception. AWOL has been contacting the people who should know, and those who might, about what is happening for several months; last year’s organisers, Bangkok Fanatix told us that they were not involved; the Tourist Authority of Thailand in Prachuap Kiri Khan changed from ‘it might be the second weekend in June’ to ‘maybe in August’. When asked who was organising it they said ‘Bangkok Fanatix’. The main TAT office in Bangkok have never had any concrete information at all other than to refer to the Prachuap office. One official even told us that it had been cancelled, while another said that ‘it might be in the next couple of months’ and no one knows who is meant to be organising it. As it is now the middle of August, the assumption must be that the Jazz Festival is not going to happen this year, and given this shambles, may never happen again. We sincerely hope this is not the case.
