cigarettes & alcohol watch out for retailers taking advantage of tax hike
hua hin, THAILAND Tax rates on liquor and cigarettes were increased in Thailand this week, and already reports have been emerging that unscrupulous retailers and other outlets across the country have taken advantage to hike their prices by a lot more than they should. While there is a knock-on effect between the various taxes that are payable on these items, the only things that should be affected are as follows: White spirits up from 120 baht to 150 baht per litre of 100% alcohol content; Blended spirits up from 300 baht to 350 baht per litre of 100% alcohol content; Brandy up from 48% to 50% by value; Cigarette excise taxes up from 85% to 87%. Beer, imported whisky and wine are completely unaffected by these announcements. Experts estimate that the new prices per-bottle of white spirits such as Lao Khao, which is consumed mostly by low-income earners, should be around 5 to 8 baht more, and not more than 10 baht. The major brands of blended spirits to be affected will be Blend 258, a local brand which is the market leader, along with Hong Thong, Mekong, and Sangsom. These are likely to rise by between 15 and 20 baht per bottle, while a slightly lower increase should be seen on brandy. Officials estimate that store prices for Marlboro cigarettes should increase by eight baht per pack, six baht for Mild Seven cigarettes and six baht for Krong Thip cigarettes. Imported cigarettes from China could rise in price by as much as 20 baht per pack, after factoring in the increase on other taxes such as value-added taxes and import taxes, officials said. TIPS FOR ROAD USERS IN THAILAND
Welcome to an occasional column offering advice and tips for anyone using the roads in Thailand. Some of them will be serious, others somewhat tongue in cheek, but all of them are borne out of experience. This week covers some of the road rules and regulations that are generally ignored by both road users and police. First up is the rule that you should always give way to oncoming traffic when you are entering from a side street. Motorcycles in particular completely disregard this, but all vehicles can be seen practising this. You may be tempted to check if your vehicle has some sort of ‘cloaking device’ on these occasions because often the drivers will look straight at you and still pull out! Pedestrians are also guilty of this, and this behaviour is often explained by many as a Bhuddist thing - a fatalistic approach of ‘whatever will be, will be’. However if you hit such a road user, because they would be in front of you it is likely to be deemed at least partially your fault by police and insurance companies. Our second widely flaunted rule, that can catch even the most experienced driver out, is the one that says you must drive the same way as the other traffic on your side of the road or on a one way street.
Again motorcycles are the main culprits here, and there appears to be an unwritten rule that anyone riding a motorbike can get away with anything except riding without a crash helmet! Other vehicles also commit this offence though, and it is particularly alarming when you are turning onto a busy road, looking only to your right at the oncoming traffic, waiting for a gap. When your chance comes you accelerate onto the road to join the flow of traffic only to be confronted by someone coming in the opposite direction! Our final flaunt this week is indicators, which should be to inform other vehicles when you are turning, or pulling in. WRONG! We are not sure how drivers here perceive them to be honest, but more often than not, when they are used it appears as if a large number of vehicles are mis-wired, signalling right then turning left (or vice versa), using the hazard warning of all of them flashing to indicate going straight on, and other incorrect usages. If someone is signalling a turn, don’t believe they are until they actually do, and if someone is not signalling, don’t believe they won’t until they don’t! hawaii, usa Sun is too round, say scientists A mystery surrounds the shape of the Sun - it is just too perfectly round, scientists have said. In fact the Sun turns out to be one of the roundest objects ever measured. Scaled down to the size of a beach ball, the difference between the Sun’s widest and narrowest diameters would be far less than the width of a human hair. For as long as we’ve bothered to care about heavenly bodies other than our own, we’ve thought that the size of the Sun varies throughout its 11-year solar cycles. Intense magnetic forces, the theory went, rendered it as malleable as a sturdy stress ball. That was a good theory, backed up by decades of data. It’s also totally wrong. What Jeffrey Kuhn and his team at the University of Hawaii in Pukalani have discovered, in fact, is that the Sun’s shape doesn’t vary at all. It’s rounder than we thought, sure, and flatter—if you can reconcile those two in your brain—but it’s also terrifically consistent. As Kuhn explained to Space: “The peculiar fact that the sun is slightly too round to agree with our understanding of its rotation is also an important clue in a longstanding mystery,” Kuhn said. “The fact that it is too round means that there are other forces at work making this round shape. We’ve probably misunderstood how the gas turbulence in the sun works, or how the sun organizes the magnetism that we can only see at the surface. Finding problems in our theories is always more exciting than not, since this is the only way we learn more.” The more we know about the Sun, the more we know about how it affects the Earth. The most fun part of all of this, though, might be how we finally figured out our mistake. The researchers called on data from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which has the distinct advantage of being in space. Huludao city, china Bikini parade sets new Guinness World Record in China A group of body confident women in China left little to the imagination on their way to setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest ever bikini parade. Traffic came to a halt in Huludao city, Liaoning Province, over the weekend, as more than 1,000 women marched to make history. The group of women, aged up to 70, paraded for nearly two hours before their efforts were officially ratified by Guinness World Record officials. Crowds lined the streets to watch the parade as performers kept them entertained with an array of dance routines throughout the street carnival. Organisers held the event as part of the annual China International Beach & Bikini Culture Exposition held across three days. The event easily eclipsed a previous record set by 450 women in Panama City, Florida earlier this year. Earlier this year, organisers of another world record bikini parade attempt in Madison Lake, Minnesota, were left red-faced when only an itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny number of participants turned up. Organisers had predicted they would easily break the world record, however well publicised opposition from Madison Lake City Council meant the attempt was blighted by poor attendance figures.

Howard Webb completes shock move to Man City

Former Man United referee Howard Webb has completed his controversial move to local rivals Man City. Webb completed the shock move on Saturday, and made his debut in yesterday’s game against newly-promoted Southampton. The former Old Trafford crowd-favourite made an immediate impact as he earned his new club a penalty, which was saved by Saint’s keeper Kelvin Davies after a tame spot-kick from David Silva. However, it wasn’t long before Webb’s trickery led to City taking the lead. A lofted ball over the top found Carlos Tevez, and Webb skillfully waved away appeals for offside to allow the Argentinian to fire home. Despite an impressive first-half performance, Webb was at fault for Southampton’s equaliser after he showed an uncharacteristic lack of concentration in which he failed to book Ricky Lambert for a blatant attempt on goal. A surprised Lambert took advantage of the

Man City boss Roberto Mancini was full of praise for Webb after the match. “I thought Howard was excellent in the firsthalf,” he said. “He tired in the second-half, but I think that was down to a lack of match fixness….. fitness, I meant fitness.”
