hua hin, THAILAND The highly popular King’s Cup Elephant Polo tournament is celebrating its eleventh anniversary this year, taking place from Wednesday 12th to Sunday 16th September at the Suriyothai Army Base approximately 20 minutes from the town centre. With free admission for everyone, spectators can rub shoulders with European and Asian royalty, international sporting stars and local celebrities. The event includes a spectacular opening parade through the main streets of Hua Hin, Thailand’s last ‘elephant spirit men’ (Kru Ba Yai), traditional dancers, a baby elephant camp and fun fair and a wide range of food and beverage outlets to tantalise the taste buds. The tournament this year will see the New Zealand All Black’s Robin Brooke, Olo Brown and Adrian Cashmore go head to head with European royals Prince Carl-Eugen Oettingen-Wallerstein and his wife Princess Anna and daughter Princess Joanna. Miss Tiffany Thailand will also be playing in the tournament for the first time adding a hint of fun and a lot of colour. International and local celebrities, including US actress Isabelle Fuhrman, Former Thai PM Aphisit Vejjajiva, super models Cindy Bishop, Lukkade Methinee and Australian Marie Claire’s Editor in Chief Jackie Frank have all painted a piece of “The Big Picture” elephant-themed painting which will be auctioned off for charity at the final gala dinner. The tournament was introduced to Thailand in 2001 by Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas and has grown to become one of the biggest charitable events in Thailand and has raised almost US$500,000 for projects that better the lives of Thailand’s elephant population.

TIPS FOR ROAD USERS IN THAILAND
Welcome to an occasional column offering advice and tips for anyone using the roads in Thailand. Some of them will be serious, others somewhat tongue in cheek, but all of them are borne out of experience. This week we look at u-turns and traffic lights. The Thai road system is an odd combination of the British and American models, with the obvious example of Britishness being driving on the left, while the US shows up in several ways, most notably that (in most cases) you are allowed to turn at a red light (obviously this is turn right in the USA but in Thailand turn left). Signs are sometimes present advising drivers that they either can or can’t ‘turn on red’, and sometimes these signs are in English as well. Hua Hin has become a confusing place in the last couple of years in this regard, with the main traffic light controlled junctions originally allowing drivers to turn left on red, and then signs went up prohibiting it, and then they came down again, and then on some junctions they appeared again...we think you get the picture! Of course drivers from other parts of Thailand who are used to being able to turn, often pull up behind someone who is stationary in the nearside lane at one of these junctions where it
is prohibited (but not necessarily with a sign!) and will give the stationary car a blast or two on their horn. We are unsure how many drivers get stopped by police for turning on red in Hua Hin, but for foreigners it is always better to be safe than sorry. Motorbikes of course, as always, are exempted from this. As for u-turns at the spots designated on divided highways, Hua Hin again seems at odds with the rest of Thailand, presumably in some sort of giant experiment in traffic management. Many of you will have noticed that a number of u-turns are permanently blocked off, particularly on the stretch south of Market Village, while the one that is normally open has a fluctuating cone situation - sometimes one is allowed to use the designated lane to u-turn, sometimes traffic is forced to do so from the ‘fast’ lane. Of course the most interesting (read: frustrating) time to drive in the town centre is on a holiday weekend, when all u-turns are prohibited along with all right turns at junctions on the main road! Eldgja, Iceland ’Lost’ tourist joins police search and rescue operation... to find herself An extensive police hunt to find a missing tourist in Iceland was called off this week after it turned out the lost woman had actually been looking for herself. More than 50 people were involved in the extensive search and rescue operation around the volcanic region of Eldgja in Iceland’s southern highlands on Saturday afternoon. Police were called to the area after it was reported that a member of a tour party had failed to return to the bus after more than an hour. Described as being ‘of Asian origin, aged 20-30, about 160cm, wearing dark clothing and speaks fluent English’, police say the tourist had failed to recognise the description of herself and had been on board the bus all along. ‘She had no idea that she was missing,’ explained one officer. A failure to count the number of people on board, coupled with the fact the woman had changed her clothes and freshened up before getting back on the tour bus, had also contributed to the astonishing mix-up. According to reports, a helicopter was also about to be sent to the area to assist the rescue operation before fog curtailed the plans. The search was eventually called off at 3am after the missing woman was found alive and well with the rest of the tour party. stoke-on-trent, england Dozy policeman holds four suspects named ‘Abu Dhabi’ in passport mix-up A police officer thought he had busted a fake passport gang after mistakenly believing all the suspects were named ‘Abu Dhabi’. The red-faced officer in Stoke-on-Trent confused the names on the passports with the country they flew to Britain from, according to Police magazine. His suspicions were raised after noticing that all four men, held on suspicion of entering the UK illegally, were all called ‘Abu Dhabi’. Luckily the officer asked a colleague to take a second look at the passports before confronting the detained men. ‘A local policing team was urgently tasked to check the identity and immigration status of four Iranian nationals who had recently entered the UK,’ the magazine reported. ‘On arriving the officer diligently checked the passport of the subjects, saying “This is highly suspicious - these documents must be false, they all have the same name

Japanese competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi had little trouble wolfing down the mountain of wieners in front of a cheering crowd at New York State Fair on Sunday. Despite his diminutive 5ft 4in frame and ripped torso, the 34-year-old’s huge appetite has earned him a reputation as one of the most feared food competitors on the planet. ‘I extend my stomach by drinking a lot of water. Right before this contest I just drink three gallons of water in one minute,’ Kobayashi explained after his recordbreaking effort. Kobayashi, an official brand ambassador for New York hot dog maker Hofmann, is the current holder of four Guinness World Records for various eating accomplishments. However he has been banned from competing in the premier International Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island over a dispute with the competition’s Major League Eating governing body. KobayashI’s imposed exile from the contest has seen his long-term rival Joey ‘Jaws’ Chestnut move level in the competition for consecutive wins. Liverpool are a work in progress, and by the time this game happens, may well have changed their squad significantly, although they look to be playing quite well. The goalless Gunners are not firing up front, but not conceding either, but we think both those stats will change here. These are always charged occasions, and it will be interesting to see Arsenal being faced by a similar style of play to themselves for once. We think the home side have the edge, barring Wenger making a last minute signing of a top striker, and so Liverpool to get their first win of the season.

weird times Fans Confused As Man United Play On Saturday At 3pm
manchester, england Confusion reigned among Manchester United fans throughout this week, after United played a home game last Saturday against high flying Fulham. Robin van Persie made his full debut at Old Trafford as United attempted to put Monday’s defeat at Goodison Park behind them. But the site of the Arsenal legend playing in United’s shirt wasn’t what was confusing the fans. “A three o clock kick off? On a Saturday?” one fan spluttered. “We aren’t used to that. We hardly ever play on a Saturday!
