building boom ten billion baht of new condo projects to launch
hua hin, THAILAND The construction boom in the Hua Hin area shows no signs of easing as we head towards the end of this year and into next, with the news this week that condo projects totalling 10 billion baht are planned for Hua Hin. The Nation reported that property firms are launching these condominium projects in the current half of the year after launching 17 such projects worth 35 billion in the final quarter of 2011. Sansiri president Srettha Thavisin said demand for homes in Hua Hin was growing strongly. All of the condo projects it launched here early this year have sold out. As a result, the company plans three new projects worth 2.6 billion baht during the rest of the year. The first is Baan Imm-Aim worth 350 million baht, which will launch in the middle of this month. Baan Ratchaprasong Co will introduce the second phase of Energy Hua Hin on 15 rai this month after selling out its 20 billion baht first phase last year. LPN Development plans to launch its first condominium project in Hua Hin, worth nearly 2 billion baht, in the final quarter. SC Asset Corporation plans a second residential project worth nearly 2 billion baht in Hua Hin in the current second half, after successfully selling out its first condominium project, The Crest Santora Hua Hin, in the first half of the year. A number of other construction projects for retail space, hotels and houses are either planned, under construction or recently completed, with the most recent being a new Tesco Lotus store that has opened opposite Soi 112. South of the town and Khao Takiab are particularly awash with new projects, and it appears that many of the condos are being bought as a result of last year’s flooding in Bangkok, with people fearing a repeat in future years.

breda, Netherlands Thousands celebrate at Redhead Day Festival in the Netherlands Ginger hair enthusiasts from around the globe headed to the Netherlands this weekend to take part in the country’s annual Redhead Day Festival celebrations. More than 1,400 redhead revellers from 52 countries took over the southern Dutch city of Breda, where the event has been held since 2005. With approximately just 1–2 per cent of the human population born with red hair, many participants head to Roodharigendag to meet up with like-minded, or like-haired, redheads. ‘Getting a group of redheads together in this way is pretty rare, we lack the opportunity for community that most other minority groups have,’ explained Jessica Shailes of online retailer Everything for Redheads. ‘There will be a real opportunity to share experiences, opinions and sun block!’ Another visitor added: ‘It is a weird feeling to not stand out. It’s good.’ Festival organiser Bart Rouwenhourst added: ‘We have families with children, we have older people who were teased as children and then we have many proud women who come to the festival. When people come together as redheads, they just look at each other,’ he told the BBC. ‘They have a certain bond.’

Police first issued a warning to the Epping local on Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities, and an hour later arrested her for playing extremely loud music. She was arrested again five hours later, before being released and rearrested again early on Wednesday, again because of her insufferably noisy music. Ms Coffey was then arrested for the fourth time after her nephew told police he attempted to remove some of his belongings from the house and she threw a frying pan at him. After being jailed on Friday, WMUR-TV reported that a judge has since recommended that she use headphones, to avoid further punishment for indulging in extremely loud rock tracks.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is... . On tenterhooks In a state of uncomfortable suspense. Tenterhooks aren’t directly connected with tents, nor are they the hooks used by butchers, as the common misspelling ‘tenderhooks’ might suggest. A tenter is a wooden frame, often in the form of a line of fencing, used to hang woollen or linen cloth to prevent it from shrinking as it dries. The tenterhooks are, not surprisingly, the hooks on the tenter used to hold the cloth in place. Tenters are no longer everyday objects but a hundred years ago, in wool weaving areas like the North of England, they were a common sight on the land around the many woollen mills, called ‘tenter-fields’. It is easy to see how the figurative expression ‘on tenterhooks’, with its meaning of painful tension, derived from the ‘tenting’ or stretching of fabric. The expression was originally ‘on the tenters’. The English West Country playright John Ford was the first to record that expression in the play
Broken Heart, 1633: Passion, O, be contained. My very heart strings Are on the Tenters. Towards the end of the century the more accurate ‘on the tenterhooks’ began to replace the earlier phrase. This first example found of it in print is in the 1690 edition of a periodical that was published annually between 1688 and 1693, The General History of Europe: The mischief is, they will not meet again these two years, so that all business must hang upon the tenterhooks till then.

famous sea captain Once upon a time there was a famous sea captain. This captain was very successful at what he did; for years he guided merchant ships all over the world. Never did stormy seas or pirates get the best of him. He was admired by his crew and fellow captains. However, there was one thing different about this captain. Every morning he went through a strange ritual. He would lock himself in his captain’s quarters and open a small safe. In the safe was an envelope with a piece of paper inside. He would stare at the paper for a minute, and then lock it back up. Afterwards he went about his daily duties. For years this went on and his crew became very curious. Was it a treasure map? Was it a letter from a long lost love? Everyone speculated about the contents of the strange envelope. One day the captain died at sea. After laying the captain’s body to rest, the first mate led the entire crew into the captain’s quarters. He opened the safe, got the envelope, opened it and the first mate turned pale and showed the paper to the others. He decides to try and thumb a lift for his monkeys and eventually a guy pulls over. “Where are you going?” asks the guy. “Do us a favour mate and take these monkeys to Bangkok Zoo” says the lorry driver, “There’s ten thousand baht in it for your troubles.” “Happy days!” says the guy and loads the monkeys onto his pickup and drives off. The lorry driver goes about trying to fix his truck and is there for a good few hours. He then sees the guy driving back down the motorway, still with all the chimps on board. Panicking, he flags him down again. “What the hell are you playing at?” He fumes. “I gave you ten thousand baht to take them to Bangkok Zoo”. “I did”, says the guy, “But there’s still five thousand baht left so now we’re off to Santorini Park”. 11

The Blue Lagoon Trophy This is a trophy awarded to the winners of a darts challenge match between a team of players from Cha-Am Darts Fun league and a team from Hua Hin Darts League. The second Blue Lagoon Trophy challenge match has been confirmed and scheduled to take place in Jungle Juice Bar in Hua Hin on Saturday 15th September 2012 starting at 3pm. The format for the match is:Teams will consist of 8 players, 4 males, and 4 females. The ladies 4 from each team will meet in the first match. This will be followed by a match between the 4 male members of each team. These two team games will be 1001 best of 3. Then 4 mixed doubles matches, followed by 8 singles matches, (a ladies singles, then a man’s singles, and so on). These matches will be 501 straight in, best of 3 legs. 1 point will be awarded to the winner of each match. The winning team will keep the trophy until it is next contested. The inaugural Blue Lagoon Trophy match was held in T-C Restaurant in June 2012, and was a great success. Dave and Noi were fantastic hosts, and on this occasion Cha Am came out on top 5-4. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is hoping to entice new West Ham signing Andy Carroll back to Anfield just 72 hours after the out-offavour striker left the club. The club, who are level on points with Aston Villa, plan to use the January transfer window to offer Carroll a lucrative deal worth £40m and as much hay as he can eat. Rodgers let the Plan B striker leave for Upton Park as he was convinced he would bring in Fulham’s Clint Dempsey with the offer of a semi-detached house in Bootle with roundthe-clock CCTV coverage. However, the deal fell through with Liverpool’s owners understood to be reluctant to meet Dempsey’s £20k demand for a new kitchen extension and perpendicular breakfast bar. Rodgers admitted last night that Carroll’s departure and Dempsey’s failure to sign has left him with fewer striking options than a South African miner. Liverpool FC are not alone in missing Carroll. Since his move to West Ham, bars and stripjoints in the city centre have reported their takings are down by 50%.
