hua hin, THAILAND If you have ever been along the stretch of Phetkasem Road by the Intercontinental Hua Hin Resort, you may well have noticed the large area of land opposite, a strange oasis of open land and trees among a sea of developed and developing projects, between sois 100 and 102. It will come as no surprise then that this week it has been announced that the 20 rai (32,000 square metres) plot is to be developed, although given it’s proximity to the Hua Hin Market Village, that it is slated to be primarily a shopping mall may be. The Mall Group, the country’s second-largest retail chain, is forming an alliance with the Liptapanlop family to jointly develop the large-scale shopping and entertainment complex on the site next year. An estimated 5 billion baht investment will be made to fund the development. Construction is scheduled to start by early next year and will be completed in 2014. The Mall Hua Hin will be a mixed-use complex with retail space between 80,000-100,000 square metres. It will comprise The Mall department store, a retail plaza, a financial services area, entertainment anchors, international fashion brand name stores and a five-star hotel. It will be the eighth retail project under the Mall Group and the second provincial branch after the Mall Korat in Nakhon Ratchasima, which was opened several years ago. Sales of The Mall Group are expected to reach 50-60 billion baht within three years, up from 45 billion this year. This is good news for Hua Hin in terms of jobs and opportunities, and once again demonstrates the confidence the business sector has in the future of the city, although at odds with the global economic situation. 2014 is shaping up to be an exciting time to be here!

leicester, england Richard III could get state funeral after discovery of bones Calls have been made for King Richard III to be given a state funeral if the bones found in Leicester are verified as belonging to the deceased monarch. Chris Skidmore, MP for Kingswood, has made the claims saying that any expense created by holding a state funeral would be counteracted by an increase in tourism. He said: ‘If it is found to be the body of Richard III then it would probably be one of the most significant archaeological finds of the century, arguably of the last 50 years.’ Mr Skidmore does however have a vested interest in the case as he has written a book based around the last battle of King Richard III, which expected to be published next year. Verification of the bones to see if they are those of the villainous monarch is underway with DNA comparisons being done against that of Michael Ibsen, a cabinet maker who is known to be a living descendent of Richard III. Mr Skidmore insists that a state funeral would be fitting as Richard III was the last English monarch to die on the battlefield. He died during the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, which was the decisive battle in the Wars of the Roses.

Wearing masks to cover their faces, maybe from embarrassment, the bungling duo also escaped with two bars of chocolate to complete their disappointing haul. Police in the western German city of Dusseldorf said the panicked pair ran away when they set off an alarm as they tried to open a till before grabbing what they could. Relieved shopkeeper Mehdi Eghbali said that the robbers failed to get their hands on any large amounts of loot. ‘There was 20 cents (15p) in the piggy bank and the chocolate bars cost €1.20 (97p) each. Total €2.60 (£2.09 or about 100 baht),’ he confirmed. Police spokesman Andre Hartwich said that the unprofessional nature of the heist suggests that the robbers were rather inexperienced. ‘We don’t believe we’re looking for professionals,’ he said. ‘But nevertheless it was a serious offence.’ While the pair’s seven-and-a-bit pence each may not go very far, at least they had some chocolate snacks to cheer them up on the way home.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is... . Ship-shape and Bristol fashion In first-class order. In May 2005 there was a brief flurry in English newspapers concerning the origin of the term nitty-gritty. A company that had recently presented an ‘equality and diversity’ course in Bristol had suggested that this term was a reference to an ethnic slur and should no longer be used. Those English journalists with a seek and destroy mission against political correctness rubbed their hands when, much to their satisfaction, it turned out that the claim had no substance. What wasn’t picked up by many at the time was an additional claim that ‘ship-shape and Bristol fashion’ was also a derogatory description of black people who were ready for sale as slaves. This is also unsupported by any evidence. The phrase has a perfectly sound derivation which is nothing to do with race. ‘Ship-shape and Bristol fashion’ isn’t widely used outside the UK and even there less so than in earlier times, so a little background may be in order. Bristol has been an important English seaport for more than a thousand years. The city is actually several miles from the sea and stands on the estuary of the River Avon. Bristol’s harbour has one of the most variable tidal flows anywhere in the world and the water level can vary by more than 30 feet between tides. Ships that were moored there were beached at each low tide. Consequently they had to be of sturdy construction and the goods in their holds needed to be securely stowed. The problem was resolved in 1803 with the construction of the Floating Harbour. There’s no absolute proof that the term ‘Bristol fashion’ originates with that geography but the circumstantial evidence seems very strongly in favour of it.
Just as an aside, Bristol has another linguistic claim to fame. In earlier days the town was called Bristowe (or Brigstow). A quirk of the local spoken dialect is to add ‘l’ to the end of words, hence Bristowe became Bristol. Another nice example of this is the name for the laminate sheeting used on worktops. You might call this Formica; in Bristol it is Formical. ‘Ship-shape and Bristol fashion’ is actually two phrases merged into one. Ship-shape came first and has been used since the 17th century. It is recorded in Sir Henry Manwayring’s The sea-mans dictionary, 1644: “It [the rake] being of no use for the Ship, but only for to make her Ship shapen, as they call it.” Bristol fashion was added later and is first seen in print during Bristol’s heyday as a trading port, in the early 19th century; for example, this extract from John Davis’ Travels of four years and a half in the United States of America, 1803: ...says I to the girl, “this is neither ship-shape, nor Bristol fashion.” Admiral William Henry Smyth’s 1865 Sailor’s Wordbook - an alphabetical digest of nautical terms, which is a treasure trove of nautically inspired phrases, has a definition of the phrase: “Said when Bristol was in its palmy commercial days - and its shipping was all in proper good order.” Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? Chelsea defender John Terry has defended his handshakes per game ratio despite having the worst record in the Premier League. Terry, who failed to connect with Anton Ferdinand’s hand before Saturday’s game against QPR, insisted that he just needed to work on the ‘being less of a racist’ and ‘avoiding sleeping with his team-mate’s girlfriends’ aspect of his game. “I just need to focus on being less of a moron,” he told reporters after the game. If I keep my head down and work hard in training then I’m sure the handshakes will come.” The pre-match handshake was introduced by Fifa to promote respect between opposing players, but it has led to some controversial incidents. “The one thing that we forgot to factor in when we came up with this directive was that the majority of footballers are complete arseholes,” admitted a Fifa spokesperson. “It is something that we said would improve
the game, but it has ended up doing more harm than good. On a more positive note, you could say that when it comes to what people expect from Fifa, it’s been a resounding success.” Pundits have begun to question whether Terry has what it takes to shake hands at the top level. “There are players in the Premier League who can shake hands for fun,” said former Liverpool and Scotland defender Alan Hansen.
