UK expat pensioners in hua hin suffer from stingy uk government

hua hin, THAILAND Apologies to AWOL’s army of non-British readers, but this week’s front page story is specifically aimed at our British readers. Many of you will have either reached a certain age, or will in the next few years, that has been designated the official pension age, currently 65 years old for men and between 60 and 65 for women depending on year of birth. From this point, UK citizens are allowed to claim the State Pension, and other accrued benefits depending on the amount of National Insurance payments made during their working life. However, if these citizens do not live in the UK or certain designated countries (e.g the USA), they are not currently entitled to any increases in the pension awarded from that point on; Thailand is one of the countries that UK pensioners have their state pension frozen in. More than half a million UK expat pensioners are currently affected worldwide by this ludicrously unfair situation. Other countries affected include Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and India, and the British Government claims that the situation is thus because there is no ‘reciprocal agreement’ with those countries; however the UK is the only western country that does not upgrade it’s expat pensioners each year in line with inflation, so other countries do so without any reciprocal agreement in place. If you think something should be done about this, please sign the online petition at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/38618 and spread the word to your friends and family. This petition has nothing to do with AWOL but we encourage everyone to sign. italy ’Fake pilot’ who travelled for free across Europe arrested A jobless man who posed as an airline pilot to hitch a free ride across Europe has been arrested, Italian police have confirmed. Wearing a homemade captain’s uniform and using fake ID, the 32-year-old Italian set up a Facebook page under the name Andrea Sirlo. Police were alerted to the scam after ‘Sirlo’ introduced himself as captain to an aviation lieutenant, who became suspicious of his young age. ‘On at least one occasion in 2012, pretending to be a pilot of a foreign commercial airline, and with a fake name, he succeeded in flying as the third pilot in the cockpit,’ police said in a statement. He sat as the third pilot on an Air Dolomiti plane from Munich to Turin in April but did not touch the jet’s controls, say police. The man, whose real name has not been released, has been charged with endangering air transport security, while further claims he hitched rides on other Lufthansa flights are also being investigated. The case echoes the film Catch Me If You Can, in which Leonardo DiCaprio plays a conman posing as a pilot.

auckland, new zealand Hospital removes ‘asparagus-sized’ eel from man’s bottom The unidentified man showed up at Auckland City Hospital’s A&E department last week to get treatment for his embarrassing problem. Hospital staff sent the patient for X-rays and a scan, which confirmed that the eel was lodged inside him. ‘The eel was about the size of a decent sprig of asparagus and the incident is the talk of the place,’ a hospital source said. ‘Doctors and nurses have come across people with strange objects that have got stuck where they shouldn’t be before, but an eel has to be a first.’ It is believed the eel was successfully removed from inside the man, who was later discharged. A spokesman for the Auckland District Health Board said ‘We can confirm that an adult male presented at Auckland City Hospital this week with an eel inside him. No further comment will be made out of respect for the patient’s right to privacy.’’ In 2008 a vicar claimed a potato got stuck up his bottom after he fell on to the vegetable while hanging curtains in the nude. However, it remains unclear how the eel managed to get stuck inside the man.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is... . Two phrases using candles Not worth the candle Worthless. This phrase relates to occupations, games etc. that were thought so lacking in merit that it wasn’t worth the expense of a candle to create enough light to partake in them. Candles were as significant a drain on household expenses as is the electricity bill today. There are several phrases in English that express regret at having wasted valuable candlelight. The best known is the Biblical ‘light under a bushel’, which appears in several of the gospels - for example, Luke 11:33 (King James Version), 1611: No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. Stephen Gosson’s The ephemerides of Phialo... And a short apologie of The schoole of abuse, 1579: “I burnt one candle to seek another, and lost bothe my time and my trauell [work].” William Lambarde’s, Eirenarcha, 1581: I shal but set a Candle in the Sunshine. ‘Not worth the candle’ is ultimately of French origin. It appears in Randle Cotgrave’s A Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues, 1611, where it is listed as: “Le jeu ne vaut pas la chandelle.” Cotgrave translated that into English as “it will not quit cost”. The first known printed record of the phrase in English is in Sir William Temple’s Works, circa 1690: “Perhaps the Play is not worth the Candle.”

Burn the candle at both ends To live at a hectic pace. Our current understanding of this phrase refers to a life that is lived frenetically and unsustainably - working or enjoying oneself late into the night only to begin again early the next day. It didn’t having that meaning when it was first coined in the 18th century. The both ends then weren’t the ends of the day but were a literal reference to both ends of a candle. Candles were useful and valuable (see previous) and the notion of waste suggested by lighting both ends at once implied reckless waste. This thought may well have been accentuated by the fact that candles may only be lit at both ends when held horizontally, which would cause them to drip and burn out quickly. Nathan Bailey defined the term in his Dictionarium Britannicum, 1730, by which time the phrase had already been given a figurative interpretation and the ‘two ends’ were a husband and wife: “The Candle burns at both Ends. Said when Husband and Wife are both Spendthrifts.” Like not worth the candle, the phrase derives from an earlier French version. Randle Cotgrave recorded it in A Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues, 1611: ‘Brusler la chandelle par les deux bouts’. John Terry lifts world gloom by retiring from international football

But the stock exchanges opened this morning to buoyant trading, leading economists to call on teammates Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard to make a similar gesture to help get the world economy back on its feet.
