hua hin, THAILAND This time last year we ran a front page thanking all of our readers and advertisers for their support since AWOL first appeared, and we make no apologies for taking this opportunity for doing so again on the occasion of the landmark of our 200th issue and four years of operations.

Last year we announced that there would be some changes to AWOL in the year that has just passed, and looking back some of them happened and some didn’t, while the biggest change of all wasn’t to the printed paper but to our website which had a complete overhaul in the early months of 2012.

This year we are limiting our announcement of changes to our introduction of our cheapest advertising option yet, from as little as 40 baht per issue (based on a year’s booking). This would be a line of text at the top or bottom (or both for an extra fee) of any page bar the front page, similar to the AWOL messages currently there. This is not to say that there won’t be more changes to AWOL and our website in the next 12 months, and we always want to hear from you as to what you would like to see. Under consideration for the printed AWOL is more detailed weather information for both Hua Hin and Thailand, a list of ‘recommended by readers’ handymen or other home services, and the possible inclusion of photo classifieds. aberdeen, scotland Aberdeen man with head stuck in a bin ‘was looking for his hat’ Cigarette scavenger William Middleton, who became an overnight internet sensation after he accidentally got his head stuck in a bin, has claimed he was looking for his hat. Homeless Mr Middleton is a familiar sight on the streets of Aberdeen where is known affectionately to locals as Tam. Now, thanks to a series of unfortunate events - and Facebook - this week, his exploits have reached a broader audience. Luckless Mr Middleton was walking by a council rubbish bin when he decided to see if he could find any cigarettes inside. He leaned in through the slot, lost his hat and got his head stuck, fast.

Pretty soon he had a sizeable audience and, within minutes, photos of the 53-year-old were on Facebook and Twitter. Paramedics and fire crews arrived at the scene and, trying to keep their faces straight, cut him free. After his Sunday afternoon ordeal he said, ‘I couldn’t get my head out. It was shocking. I was looking for my hat. I was stuck for about 20 minutes. It was stinking.

I’m now known as ‘‘bucket head’’.’

glenelg, scotland Scottish village Glenelg to be twinned with planet Mars namesake The rural village has announced an unlikely link with its namesake - situated more than 35million miles away. The coastal community, situated in the Highlands of western Scotland, shares the same name as a location on the Red Planet and it has now announced its intention to hold a twinning ceremony this month.

Glenelg, Mars, is currently where Nasa’s Curiosity rover is heading, in its much-publicised mission to find out if there has ever been life on the planet. The remotecontrolled device landed in August and has sent back a series of breathtaking high-resolution images from the voyage.

Glenelg residents are understandably excited by the robotic rover’s mission and are planning to officially celebrate its expected arrival at the location with an official twinning ceremony on October 20.

The event will be marked by the visit of American astronaut Bonnie Dunbar and a traditional Scottish ceilidh gathering.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about.

This week it is... . A tissue of lies A story invented in order to deceive.

If you use a search engine to search for ‘tissues’ you will find many pictures of paper handkerchiefs and of human skin - that’s what ‘tissue’ means to us these days. So, whence the phrase ‘a tissue of lies’? It might be thought that the meaning derives from the filmy nature of tissue and that this had been taken up as a metaphor for lies that were easy to see through and would readily break down on examination. That’s not an unreasonable assumption but is in fact completely wide of the mark.

For the correct meaning of ‘tissue of lies’ we have to go back to the 14th century meaning of ‘tissue’, that is, ‘an intricately woven ornamental cloth’. That meaning is first recorded in the Middle English allegorical poem The Romaunt of the Rose, circa 1366: The barres [decorative straps] were of gold ful fyne, Upon a tyssu of satyne.

The figurative meaning of the intermingling of characteristics, usually of a bad kind, began to be used in the 18th century. From then onward, any combination of ‘a network/web/fabric/tissue of absurdity/error/ falsehood’ can be found somewhere in literature. Of these, only ‘tissue of lies’ has withstood the test of time.

The phrase began to be used in the early 19th century, as in this example from the London journal, The Monthly Review, January 1800: The ingenuity and cunning of politicians are not infrequently employed to conceal or misinterpret facts; and venal writers are easily found, ready to construct a tissue of lies to serve the purposes of their employers.

By the way, there’s no truth that the word ‘atishoo’ derives from the handkerchief meaning of ‘tissue’ - that’s just atishoo of lies.

As Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton announced his move from McLaren to Mercedes, race-day engineers at his new team insisted they couldn’t wait to start working close to his girlfriend.

Hamilton will race for Mercedes from next season, whilst Nicole Sherzinger is expected to be hanging around the garage close to the engineers from pre-season testing in February.

Simon Williams, who wears overalls and a helmet on race day said, “I get to play with a massive drill that I can show Nicole, I bet she’ll like that. She can hold it and squeeze it she wants to.”

Another explained, “I do engines, big, powerful, noisy engines – and I’d be happy to talk to her about them whenever she likes. If the noises scare her she can grab on to me, obviously.”
