cha am, THAILAND For many years Cha Am has been the beach destination of choice for Thais escaping Bangkok or other central Thailand towns and cities, and every weekend the place is full of Thai vacationers. Increasingly though it is becoming a place for both foreign expats to live, and foreign tourists and Hua Hin expats to visit as a refreshing alternative to it’s bustling neighbour. It has been our intention for some time to make AWOL more easily available there, and while it was for a time a couple of years ago, this was only in a couple of locations. From next week AWOL will be distributed to between twenty and thirty locations in Cha Am, with more being added as the demand becomes apparent. There will also be a new section of the paper dedicated to Cha Am, which will include a map and any local news or information we obtain or that is supplied to us which we feel will be of interest to readers. Please send any information you have on either Cha Am or the Hua Hin area to submissions@awolonline.net or call 081 649 8361 to tell us about it. We will add to the new section as needed, which might include a separate classifieds section, live events/balloon chasers and local sports among other things. Lucknow, india School with 45,000 pupils crowned the world’s biggest An Indian school with 45,000 pupils, 2,500 teachers and 1,000 classrooms has been named the world’s biggest by Guinness World Records. The City Montessori School (CMS) in Lucknow had 39,437 pupils registered in the 2010-2011 academic year, but bosses say enrolment numbers have already risen above the 45,000 mark. Opened back in 1959 by Jagdish Gandhi and his wife Bharti, with a loan of just 300 rupees, and amazingly, just five pupils, the school now sprawls over 20 sites in the city and has pupils between the ages of three and 17. Mr Gandhi, who still plays a part in the school at the age of 75, said: ‘The phenomenal growth of our school is a reflection of our efforts to please our parents with our service to their children. Our students have exceptional academic results each year and outstanding global exposure. Getting this Guinness record is heartening but it’s not just about size.’ While the school promotes the advantages of being able to make lots of friends, it does admit there is nowhere big enough to hold an assembly.
Itacoatiara, brazil Mysterious softball-sized eyeball washes up on Florida beach State wildlife officials in Florida are trying to determine the species of the blue eyeball, which was discovered by Gino Covacci on Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale. ‘It was very, very fresh,’ he told local press. ‘It was still bleeding when I put it in the plastic bag.’ The eyeball has been put on ice to preserve it and will be analysed at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St Petersburg. Agency spokeswoman Carli Segelson says the eyeball likely came from a marine animal, since it was found on a beach. ‘This is definitely an unusual situation, where an eye would be found independent of any other body part,’ she added. So far, possibilities include a giant squid, a whale or some type of large fish. The organisation has added the image of the eye to its Facebook page and asked fans to get in touch with their suggestions. Facebook users currently do not seem to be taking the quest for knowledge seriously, with some suggesting it came from Sauron, the scourge of Middle Earth, or even from Bigfoot.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is... . Jobs for the boys Favouritism where jobs or other patronage is given to friends and acquaintances. The boys in this phrase means any group of men who share a common interest or background. It has been suggested that the phrase derives from the class system in England which used to, and to an extent still does, maintain an ‘old boys network’. This confines power and patronage within a closed upper class group, i.e. the ‘old boys’ of English public schools. There’s no record of ‘jobs for the boys’ being used in a UK context until well into the 20th century though. It had previously been used widely in the USA; for example, this item from the New York newspaper The Syracuse Herald, October 1913: “Party government isn’t organized for efficiency, nor to serve the people. It is organized to provide jobs for the boys.” ‘Jobs For The Boys’ had a different meaning when it was
