hua hin, THAILAND The long running saga of the location of the immigration office in the town appears to be drawing to a close, with the news this week that the current location on the Canal Road next to the Three Girls restaurant is to close, and relocate to a new official building in the centre of town. However the rumours that this relocation is to happen this year appear to be unfounded, as an officer at the current office informed AWOL that the move will happen next year. The Hua Hin Immigration office is actually a satellite office of the Dan Singkhon Immigration near Prachuap Kiri Khan, and it has had several locations in the town since it first opened as an office within the police station in 2005. The first move was in 2007 to a house on a new development on Soi 102, but after two years there the office moved to Soi 23, just behind the Index Shopping mall, and then in October 2010, to the current location. It does appear as though this next move will be the final one for several years, as well as being part of a bigger plan of moving towards Hua Hin becoming the provincial capital of a brand new province, something that has been mooted for some time. If this does happen eventually, then the immigration office here would finally become their own masters, and working expats are also likely to have the convenience of an office of the Labour Department in the same building, who are responsible for the approval and issuing of work permits - currently this involves a trip to Prachuap Kiri Khan. These are all additional signs of the current and future growth of Hua Hin, on top of the numerous and very obvious large and small projects that are underway or planned, such as the Bluport and Venezia retail developments.

Kogelo, kenya Witch doctor calls election for Barack Obama after analysing shells, bones A witch doctor from the Kenyan village where Barack Obama’s father is buried has predicted a landslide for the US president in Tuesday’s election. John Dimo used shells, bones and other items outside his tent in Kogelo, western Kenya, to call a winner in the race between Mr Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney. And Mr Dimo, who claims to be 105, says that the mystical items dispute news that the election will be a close call. Pointing to a white shell, he declared: ‘Obama is very far ahead and is definitely going to win.’ Kogelo is Mr Obama’s late father’s home town and expectations of another victory for him are high. Most Kenyans consider Mr Obama, the son of a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya, as one of their own. He has five Kenyan half-brothers and a half-sister. Dimo, about 115-years-old, says he knew Mr Obama’s father, who was buried in the village in 1982.

The two-man chopper was passing by a mansion in the US surrounded by woodland when they saw the boy crash the plane. The scaled-down P51 Mustang was snagged at the very top of the trees and the pilot knew that it would be unlikely to get the plane back from the ground. So, swooping low, the pilot - whose name is Jimmy hovered over the tree-tops while his co-pilot picks up the top plane and they land. ‘Do you think I’ll have permission to land now,’ he jokes as they take the chopper down. The boy and his family rush to greet them, and can hardly believe their luck. The rescue has been viewed on YouTube more than one million times since it took place last month.

BOUQUETS FOR BIKERS! Consider a few thousand Motorcycle Club Members from a dozen or so different Clubs in one place on a Saturday night. Throw in some rock ‘n’ roll and the beer is flowing. It would never happen in most Western countries but if it did; expect chaos, mayhem and violence. Not so in Thailand and certainly not so in Cha Am at the recent 8th Diamond City ‘Big Bike Rally’. Sure the black leathers were there and the Club ‘colours’ with a variety of skulls and devilish logos proudly worn. Radically designed motor bikes; loud in sound and appearance were also on display. However that was the only similarity between these party goers and their less than friendly ‘bikie’ counterparts. The atmosphere on Saturday night was ‘family friendly’ with bikers enjoying the company of their ‘brothers’ both within their own Club, with the Members of other Clubs but also with those outside the Motorcycle Club scene. All this and not one Police uniform in sight! On the big stage the Lord Mayor of Cha Am, Khun Nugool Pornsomboonsiri welcomed the bikers to town and they didn’t let him down. On behalf of the charities of Cha Am the Lord Mayor accepted a generous

However the residents of this peaceful town would agree that the Big Bike Rally showed us all how to enjoy a good time without the ‘aggro’! As an ‘outsider’ to the Motorcycle Club world there are many things about the culture that I just ‘don’t get’ and maybe I never will. However seeing how bikers can get along with the community in a colourful and peaceful way is something I certainly do ‘get’. glasgow, scotland Sir Alex Ferguson has sensationally called time on his football career by signing a threeyear deal to manage Scotland. Ferguson said he did not take the decision to walk away from the game lightly. “I’ve devoted almost my entire life to football, but now it’s time to try something totally different.
