loy kratong washed out; other events threatened by unseasonal weather

hua hin, THAILAND The annual festival of Loy Kratong was virtually a washout this week as the heavy rain and rough seas dampened both people’s enthusiasm and their attempts to float their kratongs. The event is often accompanied by windy conditions but it is usually dry, and hundreds of street sellers of food, kratongs, nick nacks and novelties will have seen a dramatic effect on their takings. Another event that could be adversely affected by the weather, although we hope not, is the annual Hua Hin Bike Week, taking place this year on Friday 30th November (today) and Saturday 1st December; this has also had a late venue change from it’s usual place along the canal road to the area known as ‘19 Rai’ or more formally as Queen Sirikit Park. It will be a big party regardless of the weather, with plenty of food, live music and of course hundreds of bikes, but we urge people to be careful of potential slippery conditions on the roads. The inclement weather is forecast to continue intermittently over the next few days, possibly coming to an end just after the most auspicious holiday of the year, His Majesty The King’s birthday on Wednesday December 5th. It should improve before then but apparently there is still a chance of some rain or thunderstorms. For next week’s local forecast and tide times, plus a summary of national and international weather information, please turn to page four. While we cannot give any analysis as to why the weather pattern has been so strange recently, it does seem likely that from next week on we will be looking at a virtually unbroken dry spell until at least the end of April, the norm for this area, when everyone will be begging for rain again!
