hua hin, THAILAND It may not seem like a story worthy of headline news, but the opening earlier this month of the new Lawn Bowls Hua Hin at the Sea Jays Resort just off the Pala U Road has added a unique facility to what is on offer here, as it is the only public synthetic grass bowls green in Thailand.

Using the same high quality surface as is used at the Olympics, the only other facilities offering this are private concerns normally used by Olympic competitors in training. It is an all year, all weather surface, protected from the sun at both ends and with the option to play at night as it is floodlit.

Being located at the Sea Jays Resort also gives access to the other facilities there including swimming pool, sun terrace, crazy golf, full restaurant and bar which also have a pool table and dartboard. The club will be offering memberships for regular players to take advantage of, but non-members will always be welcomed, and prices start from 200 baht per person. Bowls equipment is available for rent and sale but anyone with their own sets can use them and only have to rent the green, which is divided into several ‘lanes’.

The club is holding a ‘roll up’ open day on Saturday 19th January where anyone can try their hand at bowls for free, with food and drinks available as well. Lessons and coaching will be available for those interested in taking up the game, and leagues will be set up for those with a competitive streak.

The general usage of this phrase has altered somewhat scarlet, have been said to have derived their ‘hunting since it first entered the language. We now usually see pink’ name from a tailor called Thomas Pink and that ‘in it with the specific meaning of ‘the pink of condition’, the pink’ refers to both the jackets and to the healthy, i.e. in the best possible health. A drunken passenger on a flight to New York was taped to his seat after allegedly spitting on other travellers, trying to choke a woman and yelling the plane was going to crash. A picture and account of the bizarre event was posted to Tumblr by Andy Ellwood, from New York, who said he was filled in by a friend who witnessed the man fly off the handle.

new year’s resolution It’s 2nd January and in line with his resolution to lose weight, a guy calls a company and orders their 5-day, 5kg weight loss program.

The next day, there’s a knock on the door and there stands before him a voluptuous, athletic, 19 year old babe dressed in nothing but a pair of Nike running shoes and a sign around her neck. She introduces herself as a representative of the weight loss company. The sign reads, “If you can catch me, you can have me.”

Without a second thought, he takes off after her. A few miles later puffing and puffing, he finally gives up. The same girl shows up for the next four days and the same thing happens. On the fifth day, he weighs himself and is delighted to find he has lost 5kg as promised.

ChaAm news SOI DOGS - ACTION REQUIRED! One thing I really dislike about foreigners in Thailand is when groups sit around criticising everything that is different culturally, practically or legally from their country of origin. There is a temptation to say ‘if you don’t like it here, go home!’

However it must be said that there is at least one thing about life in Cha – Am that is unacceptable, regardless of nationality and whether you are a resident or tourist. The problem is Soi Dogs!

How can it be considered OK that no one is able to freely walk the streets without fear of being attacked by packs of marauding stray dogs fiercely territorial and ready to attack without provocation?

Try riding a bicycle across the open ground to the golf driving range or walk along the Northern end of Chao Lai Road and the chances are you will experience this unwanted attention. Once bitten you will need rabies shots and if you are a tourist you certainly won’t want to return.

Even on the Beach Road during the daytime dogs attack innocent walkers. A friend of mine ordered dinner at a beach front restaurant but made the mistake of visiting the toilet after ordering his food.

On his return it had been served and was being enjoyed by a stray dog! Another was cycling along the beach road when a dog apparently sleeping on the roadside attacked him biting him on the leg. Some resort to arming themselves with ‘zappers’ or use other deterrents.

This cannot be the answer.

It is not just about problems for humans but also the welfare of canines. Often these dogs are seriously diseased and maimed.

Any dog lover would agree that it is far from humane to allow their suffering to continue.

HONDA BIGWING The eagerly anticipated arrival of Honda’s BigWing Division in Thailand, as well as sales of domestically assembled big bikes, is paving the way for European and Japanese companies to fully capitalise on the growing popularity and culture of big bikes.

As a highly taxed luxury good far exceeding the price of an average motorcycle, a super bike makes a strong statement of authority about the lifestyle, interests and wealth of its rider. Fueled by increasing numbers of Thai buyers, the image of big bikes has changed and they are gradually finding a place in Thai and Asean society as something desirable, original and “cool”.

The new Honda BigWing centre in the Pradit Manutham area is the biggest superbike centre in Thailand, and one of the biggest in the world, according to Honda. “Honda BigWing will become the new standard for Thailand’s big bike industry. The first Honda BigWing will also be the prototype for all branches to open in the future,” said Chiaki Kato, the president of AP Honda.

Suchart Arunseangroj, director of sales for AP Honda, said the decision to expand the BigWing division in Thailand reflected the declining import tax on big bikes. Currently at 27%, the rate will decrease by 5 points each year until 2017 when it will be zero.

Mr Suchart said that with 20 million Honda bikes already on the roads, and with 2 million more being sold every year, “people want a step up in the size, power and appearance of their bikes”.

With a 70% share of all motorcycles sold in Thailand, Honda foresees high potential for the big bike market. As an already established market leader in big bikes, bringing in its larger and famous range of bikes is a step toward taking control of market. The centre will first import six models from Japan to Thailand including the world famous GL1800 “Gold Wing”, the most popular touring bike in North America.

Honda looks to join the trend with other big bike manufacturers and start assembling big bikes in Thailand by the end of this year. Ducati has already taken its bike parts production to the next level with a full assembly line in Thailand. It sells its locally made

Ducati sales in Thailand have grown rapidly and steadily over the past two years, doubling last year. The 803cc domestically produced Monster 795 costs 399,990 baht, half the price of other imported models.

The British bike maker Triumph, which started manufacturing parts for export in Thailand in 2002, now has three plants assembling frames, fuel tanks, engine parts and chrome engine covers.

Bike makers are sensing that the time is right to start producing and selling big bikes in Asean. “It has already been proved by other manufacturers of prestigious cars and powerful motorcycles that Thailand represents the perfect place to build technologically advanced vehicles like ours,” said Ducati’s Mr Scalzo.

Ken Svensson, general manager of Harley Davidson Thailand, said that Honda’s entry into the market would “give leverage to the big bike market and raise awareness throughout Thailand”.

He said the entry of such a big player as Honda and increasing domestic production would put pressure on importers in the grey market and ultimately benefit all authorised dealers in Thailand and the bike enthusiasts that patronise them.

bombed out Balotelli ‘didn’t know he’s not supposed to kill people’

manchester, england MARIO Balotelli last night said he was ‘surprised’ at Roberto Mancini’s angry reaction to the bomb he planted under his car.

The Manchester City striker insisted the 1kg device was a ‘spur of the moment thing’ and that he would ‘probably have forgotten to detonate it anyway’.

He said: “Now everyone is saying I lack professionalism. That seems unfair. It was just a medium sized car bomb. I do it all the time. And I did write ‘Love from Mario’ on it.”

Balotelli added: “Mancini has always been like this. When we were both at Inter Milan I had a leopard that I used to starve for a few days and then release at training.

obviously really hungry. I sometimes think Mancini is a very cruel man.”

City’s owners now face the dilemma of trying to offload the mercurial striker to a manager that is okay with random car bombs. There is apparently some interest from a Sicilian outfit, and they are also expecting an offer ‘any day now from a mob in Chicago’ according to a spokesman. Footballologist Wayne Hayes said: “They’ll need to write some kind of water-tight ‘no murdering’ clause into his contract. The lawyers will have a field day. Still, if he does go to Syria, at least he will have something to do in his spare time.”
