50m baht insurance fund for tourists
hua hin, THAILAND The Thai Tourism Ministry has announced this week that a 50 million baht insurance fund is to be set up on February 1, 2013, partly as an attempt to offset falling confidence of foreigners in visiting the kingdom after a number of high profile incidents. It is aimed at aiding foreign visitors in distress, particularly those who are killed or injured while on holiday here, although the Finance Ministry still have to approve the budget. Tanittha Sawetsila Maneechot, deputy permanent secretary for the Tourism Ministry, made the announcement, while Pol General Vudh Liptapanlop from the National Police Office has had discussions with other agencies, including the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), Consumer Protection Board and Tourist Police about measures to protect foreign tourists from scams as part of preparations for the Asean Economic Community in 2015. In addition to the threat to tourists from crime, Thailand’s Road Safety Centre has proposed that relevant agencies strive to be more accurate with accident statistics and cause of death, enforce rules about tour buses, drivers, security equipment and safety systems, provide a road safety handbook to tourists offering tips on staying safe, and encourage tourist destinations to improve road safety management through training and setting up consultancy units. If all these measures are put in place it should mean that the rising numbers of foreigners caught up in road accidents and criminal activity is reduced, but as always the doubt remains whether the implementation will be executed as well as the announcement.

ChaAm news Swiss Sheep Farm Opened in July 2012, it’s the latest addition to Cha-am’s attractions. It’s a park of about 20 rai, with animals in a western-like farm setting. It’s called the Swiss Sheep Farm, but with an old Dodge rusting in the sun, an English phone booth and a Dutch windmill, you feel more like you are in a Thai park filled with random western clichés! The main activity is to enter the sheep fold and feed the sheep with grass, or bottle-feed a calf. There are also a few rides for small children, and a restaurant. Just like Santorini Park, the Swiss Sheep Farm is one of those trendy, “exotic” places where Thai people like to stop on the way to their holiday destination, to
enjoy the scenery and take pictures. The children will love it too, but don’t expect an educational trip, as nothing is said about sheep-farming, shearing or dairy produce. The Swiss Sheep Farm is on Phetkasem road (highway #4) at kilometer 201, on the left side of the road when coming from Bangkok, just before the PTT gas station and 500 meters before the fork to Chaam and Hua Hin on the left (straight being the bypass to Pranburi). Open everyday from 10am to 7pm. Admission fee 50 bahts for adults, 30 bahts for children.
