or ‘happy chinese new year’! hua hin, THAILAND Once again the Chinese New Year is upon us, and as with most countries and places in the world, both Chinese and other nationals will join in the celebrations in Hua Hin. The new year will be the year of the Snake and we bid farewell to the year of the Dragon.

The only formal public celebration known to us at press time will be the event being held in Market Village on Saturday 9th February from 5pm, which will have a traditional lion dance as well as acrobats and a children’s competition. However no doubt there will be other private and public events, given away by the sound of firecrackers going off.

Many Chinese people regard 2013 as a good year because it is right after the auspicious Year of the Dragon, and indeed the snake is sometimes referred to as the Junior Dragon. People born in the Year of Snake are said to share certain characteristics: cute, charming, aware, elegant, mysterious, cunning, and passionate. It is said that they are great mediators and good at doing business.

Some famous people who have been born in previous snake years are John F. Kennedy, Charles Darwin, Bob Dylan, Charlie Sheen, Chris Rock, Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Placido Domingo, Marlon Brando, Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Brad Pitt, Oprah Winfrey and Mahatma Gandhi.

The headline above transliterated reads “Gong Hei Fat Choi” but there are other ways of saying the phrase depending on dialect and other factors, but this is the most well known, along with Sen Lin Fai Lok, both of which are Cantonese. Traditional Chinese say Xin Nian Kuai Le. And in Thai?

Properly it is sùk-san wan bpii mai but more commonly sawadee bpii mai.

However you say it, we hope the year of the Snake proves to be a good one for all our readers.

pembrokeshire, uk Stinking rich: Walker finds whale vomit ‘worth £100,000’ on Morecambe beach It smells like horse manure and looks like a dirty beach rock but a lump of ‘floating gold’ could pocket one man over £100,000. The unusual ‘stone’ is believed to be a piece of rare and valuable whale vomit, or ambergris, an in-demand ingredient used in perfumes such as Chanel No.5. Lancashire resident Ken Wilman discovered the 3kg lump while out walking his boxer dog Madge on Morecambe beach. ‘I didn’t actually realise what it was at first, I couldn’t understand why Madge was so interested in it,’ he explained. ‘It smelled horrible. I left it, came back home and looked it up on the internet.

When I saw how much it could be worth, I went back to the beach and grabbed it!’

Mr Wilman has already been offered $50,000 (£42,000) for his find by a French ambergris dealer, but experts believe it could be worth much more once it has been officially verified. Chris Hill, curator at the Aquarium of the Lakes in Cumbria, said it is ‘quite a find’. ‘How much it’s worth will depend on how fresh it is, but it’s potentially $180,000 (£113,000),’ he added.‘There are places in Europe that will buy it from you. They will age

The Morecambe man now plans to send a sample to an expert in France. ‘If he verifies it, it could be like winning the Lottery,’ he said.

Undercover Thailand: Sex, Sin and Smiles

Welcome to this new regular column, penned by an expert on Thailand and it’s ways, William Sparrow.

While there will be an emphasis on the topic of sex in Thailand, the column will cover a variety of other subjects, including business, politics, celebrities, corruption and more.

Pattaya police crash swinger’s party

By William Sparrow Police in Pattaya became aware of a swinger’s club due to their open advertising of events in the beach resort community popular with tourist and expatriates in Thailand’s eastern province of Chonburi.

Authorities decided to further investigate the club’s sexual soirees and sent in undercover officers.

The detectives found that the swinger’s club required an initial membership fee of 2,300 baht followed by monthly dues amounting to about half of that to cover events and operational costs. As the undercover work of the officers progressed, they found that sex parties were regularly held on Saturday nights in the greater Pattaya area.

On Saturday, 27th January 2013 the cops decided to go ‘deep-cover’ to penetrate the swinger’s sex club and showed up at the scheduled party to inspect activities. Once the officers were satisfied that the event being held at the Rama Kien resort on Soi Thuphraya 15 was in fact an inappropriate sex party police stormed in hard.

Despite the heavy police presence, most of the Thai and foreign participants being naked and the property being tactically isolated in nature most of the several dozen party-goers were able to make their escape when they scattered in the wake of the police raid. Only various abandoned sex toys, ‘personal massage devices’ and condoms littered the floor of the sex den for officers to collect as evidence after the raid, police reported.

In fact, in the days that followed only two arrests were announced and attributed to the raid. A 42-year old female Thai native identified as Kannika Kamkhai and her partner Verloop Anthony, a 61-year-old expatriate from the Netherlands were taken into custody, charged and held at the Pattaya police station.

The couple who stand accused of being the swinger’s club operators and sex party event organizers have lived in Pattaya for a number of years. Ms Kannika has admitted to police that they are the owners of the room at Rama Kien resort and that they developed the website promoting the club and sex parties around Pattaya.

Meanwhile in Hua Hin, especially when compared to the more hedonistic dalliances on offer in Pattaya, this town remains more restrained without any organized swinger’s sex clubs of note. A number of bar owners who chose to speak with AWOL for this article said that they knew of no such parties or clubs in the Hua Hin area.

One manager and ‘mamasan’ known simply as ‘Apple’ on Soi Bintabhat who has been in the business here for nearly two decades laughed at the prospect of such clubs here, but concluded by saying she would join if there was one.

Another bar owner persuaded to speak with this reporter said, “I know of no [such] clubs, but I do get special requests and try to help out regular customers,” she told AWOL. The woman went on with the help of her staff describing how she and the girls would help ‘likeminded individuals and couples’ arrange private rendezvous among consenting adults.

Such sexual escapades are common anywhere in the world and should not be surprising, especially in today’s social media driven subculture. But as it stands no such swinger’s clubs are known to exist in Hua Hin, for now.

1: Wondering if there is something in the water here that turns people into Gossiping, Backstabbing Alcoholic Layabouts? It seems to him that after a period of approximately 2-3 years these attributes are too often common in Expats.

2: Has the “Special Services” or “SAS”, over the years secretly increased in numbers ? Or have they made Thailand the Retirement village for Ex Members?

3: Does Everyone really have this Mythical “Person” in high places or authority to call on in times of need?

4: Does constant whining, complaining & negativity become

an art form after 3 years living here?

5: Does success in business imminently place a Target on your back for those who have tried but failed & will go out of their way to knock down anyone who is successful? Or perhaps to those whom have never got off their ass to do ANYTHING at all except to cheat their systems in their homeland.

6: Do peoples Spines get surgically removed after 3 years living here?

7: Is honor & Loyalty left at the airport on arrival? Or is it just a fact that they were never common personal attributes in the first place?

8: Do the ladies “Really” think I`m a handsome Man?

How could I answer these questions? If I did answer honestly, perhaps I would end up just like them ...

HUA HIN AND KHAO TAKIAB FUN LEAGUE SINGLES FINALS The Hua Hin and Khao Takiab Fun Pool League teaches the climax of the season with the finals of the singles tournament to be held at Sunset Boulevard Bar in Khao Takiab next Wednesday 20th February from about 7pm. The tournament has been running all season and started with over 40 players from the 12 teams in the league.
