english expat killed in motorbike crash

hua hin, THAILAND Family and friends of Daniel ‘Chalky’ Howlett were left devestated this week as the partner in the All Nations Guesthouse was killed in a motorbike accident on his way home in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred at about 1.30 am as Daniel was driving home on his motorbike, with friends on two others alongside. Shortly after turning off the Pala-U Road towards Black Mountain he went to the front of the convoy and his friends watched in horror as another motorbike appeared from a side road and smashed into his bike, throwing him from it. Both riders suffered serious injuries and Daniel was declared dead shortly after being taken to hospital. An autopsy will be carried out, but it is thought that a broken neck and spinal cord damage were the fatal injuries. Sadly the crash helmet that he religiously wore could not protect him.

The 16 year old driver of the other bike had a passenger who fled the scene, something he himself could not do as he had suffered at least one broken leg and possibly two. Police investigating the accident revealed that the boy had no driving licence or insurance. It was not clear at press time if any further action was to be taken.

Daniel’s parents and sister were contacted very soon after the accident but it is too soon for a decision to be made regarding the funeral, however a service will be held in Hua Hin either way - anyone wanting information on this should contact Martin or Neil at All Nations. The British Embassy are assisting with any arrangements that need to be made.

Chalky was a lively, fun loving guy who made friends easily and was making a great life here in Hua Hin; AWOL sends our sincerest condolences to his family and numerous friends. We will all miss you Chalky.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is.... Come a cropper Fall over or fail at some venture.

The word crop derives from the Old Norse word kropp, which was the name of a hump or swelling on the body.

The OED graphically describes a crop as a ‘swollen protuberance or excrescence’. This later modified into meaning any swollen or rounded item, for example, a bird’s gullet, the seed head of a ripe plant (the source of the word crop as applied to cereals etc.) or, spelled as croup, the rear end of a horse - also called the crupper.

‘Come a cropper’ is one from the list of British phrases that is associated in the popular imagination with Victorian inventors. These include the various phrases based on the name of Thomas Crapper, the sanitary engineer and ‘bats in the belfry’, reportedly coined after George Bateson. Henry Smith Cropper is the man supposedly the source of ‘come a cropper’. Unlike Bateson, who turns out to be an invented inventor, Cropper, like Crapper, did actually exist. Indeed he was a prominent enough citizen to become Sheriff of Nottingham. He didn’t occupy his time in chasing outlaws around the local forests though. H. S. Cropper and Co. began selling the Minerva platen printing press in 1866. It was a successful design and before long all platen presses were known as croppers. It is suggested that ‘come a cropper’ derives from the accidents that print workers had when catching their fingers between the plates of the presses.

Like the Bateson story, this is an appealing tale. There’s no truth to it though - it’s just another invention.

For the actual derivation we need to consider the nether quarters of a horse - the croup or crupper. In the 18th century, anyone who took a headlong fall from a horse was said to have fallen ‘neck and crop’; for example, this extract from the English poet Edward Nairne’s Poems, 1791:

‘Neck and crop’ and ‘head over heels’ probably both derive from the 16th century term ‘neck and heels’, which had the same meaning. ‘Come a cropper’ is just a colloquial way of describing a ‘neck and crop’ fall. The phrase is first cited in Robert S. Surtees’ Ask Mamma, 1858: [He] “rode at an impracticable fence, and got a cropper for his pains.”

By the time John C. Hotten published his A Dictionary of Modern Slang, Cant, and Vulgar Words in 1859, the phrase has come to refer to any failure rather than just the specific failure to stay on a horse: “Cropper, ‘to go a cropper’, or ‘to come a cropper’, i.e., to fail badly.”

But that hasn’t stopped hundreds of Star Wars fans stumping up £75,000 (3.5 million baht) to build a Death Star.

A plea for cash to construct a moon-sized planet destroyer with a single annihilating energy beam went out on crowdsourcing website Kickstarter.

Gnut.co.uk said the superweapon is needed in the light of ‘continuing threats’ against Earth.

In just two days, 515 supporters pledged cash – despite the group making clear it’s all a joke. For the project to go ahead, it needs to raise £20million… by April 1.

The site promises a thank you and ‘the knowledge that we’re one step towards a safer planet’ in return for £1.

Leicestershire-based Gnut.co.uk took up the campaign after a petition to the US government fell on deaf ears.

The White House said: ‘We don’t have a Death Star, but we do have a president who knows his way around a lightsaber.’

belgium Chocolate stamps launched by Belgian postal service Chocolate stamps have been launched by the Belgian postal service to celebrate the country’s popular national delicacy.

The stamps taste and smell of chocolate, unofficially confirming the country’s status as the finest chocolatiers on the continent.

‘We have added a chocolate taste to the glue of the stamps… which you can taste when you lick it,’ the Belgian postal service said. ‘The stamps are also imbued with the smell.

‘It was not easy to get the scent and flavour of the dark chocolate right. In the end, people from Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland all worked on it.

‘It is not the first scented stamp … but this time it has been combined with a flavour.’

The series of five stamps will cost €6.20 (250 baht) and are set to go on sale in time for Easter on March 25.

Bad Moon on the Rise

By William Sparrow For nearly five decades, the beaches of Thailand’s Koh Phangan have hosted the Full Moon Party that became popular with the young backpacking culture. Travel guides and websites give the island and the monthly party a hippy inspired aura of sixties-seventies free love indulgences, alcohol-fueled debauchery and drug-induced decadence.

Times have changed, but the party rages on with young women donning tiny bikinis downing buckets of hard liquor and energy drink mixers, punters pop pills, chug shakes with hallucinogenic mushrooms and smoke cannabis as if it were legal. In recent years, a more affluent younger generation of travellers has filled the beaches seeking a quite literal escape from reality, inhibitions melting away as cocktails are drained and drugs take effect.

Most visitors to Hua Hin and expats who have chosen to call it home

are likely to be quite grateful not to find young tourists who have overindulged urinating into the sea in the darkness of night or couples so inebriated that they have sex on the sandy shores oblivious to onlookers.

It is the premiere party island for sure and with this designation comes the inevitable laundry list of arrests, fights, accidents, scams and crime. Drug busts are almost as common as stories about police – or people impersonating police – shaking down tourists for pay-offs just moments after having bought drugs.

With an average of three sex attacks at each monthly Full Moon Party, sexual assault is not uncommon as the case of an Israeli woman who was gang-raped on a secluded part of the beach demonstrated during the party that coincided with New Year’s Eve about a month ago.

On the same night, things would come to a head and gain international media attention when a 22-year old British traveller was shot dead by

a stray bullet from a gang dispute between Thai locals outside the bar.

Stephen Aston was from Purley, south London and was a hardworking investment broker who, as he danced the night away, was struck by the bullet and died on the dance floor of the island’s beach bar Zoom.

While probably thankful not to be home to a monthly event like the Full Moon Party and descended upon by drunken revellers Hua Hin and the people here, like any community in today’s modern world, is not immune to crime, random violent acts or simply bad luck that can strike anyone.

Wheels of justice grind as they will but the tragedy on that moon-lit night weeks ago on Koh Phangan, or cases of friends and loved ones lost closer to home here in Hua Hin can at least serve as a reminder to us to take due care, cherish those around us and to celebrate responsibly.

Crab festival The third edition of the Crab Festival is currently taking place in Cha-am until February 17th. As usual there will be plenty of food stalls, a night market and free concerts. Here is the line-up for the remaining days: Feb 15 - Flavour Feb 16 - Yim Rsiam Feb 17 - Tum Jaankrong development plans The Cha Am Mayor, Mr. Nukul Pornsomboon-Siri, has recently been talking about his development plans for the area. Among these are the construction of a new City water manufacturing plant located in the Ruam Jai Pattana community. This is to solve the water shortages in the south of Cha-Am. Also planned

is the provision of underground electrical wiring for the entire beach road area to improve the views of the ocean and beach in this important precinct.

A park with a waterfall will be built in Tung Takad Plee which will cover 226 Rai. To improve public safety CCTVs are to be installed in many places around the City.

The Mayor also revealed the public celebrations for Songkran, the Thai New Year on 13th April 2013, which will entail a morning ceremony at 7.30am with food offerings and a bathing ceremony for the Buddha statue. From 11am onward there will be a Parade starting from the Long Beach Hotel along the Cha-Am beach road then along Ruamchit Road, ending at the Cha-Am

Municipality. During the evening there will be a musical performance by well known artists near the ChaAm Municipality building.

BLUE LAGOON TROPHY The third installment of the Blue Lagoon Trophy took place in the Blue Lagoon Guesthouse and Bar on Saturday February 9th, and was another great event. A thrilling game saw the two teams locked at 7 - 7 at the end of the scheduled games, which required a playoff to settle things. The Hua Hin team managed to clinch the win in the playoff and triumphantly haul the trophy home until the next event. Congratulations to all who took part in what was a great day, and a special thank you to Stuart and his team at Blue Lagoon who were excellent hosts.

HUA HIN AND KHAO TAKIAB FUN LEAGUE SINGLES FINALS The Hua Hin and Khao Takiab Fun Pool League teaches the climax of the season with the finals of the singles tournament to be held at Sunset Boulevard Bar in Khao Takiab next Wednesday 20th February from about 7pm. The tournament has been running all season and started with over 40 players from the 12 teams in the league.

Club owner John Henry hopes the reduction in insurance costs could free up funds for manager Brendan Rodger’s rebuilding programme, whilst insuring a more relaxing match-day experience for fans in Anfield’s cheapest seats.

Henry told the club website, “Jamie has been a magnificent servant to the club for many years, sometimes single-handedly displaying a rear-guard action that has had our fans ducking left right and centre to avoid his exquisite ‘passes’.”
