hua hin, THAILAND Most of the males, and some of the females reading this will recall fondly the lazy hazy days of childhood summers when they would head to the local park to kick a ball around with their chums. Games like ‘Wembley’, ‘Three and In’ and ‘Headers and Volleys’ were the staple diet then, but things have moved on since those times, and in Hua Hin the concept of playing and learning has arrived in style. ProZone Coaching has organised three 5-day Summer Football and Mini Football English Learning Camps to take place in March and April. The venue will be the Xplode Arena in Soi 10, and kids from the ages of two up to sixteen and over are catered for in what will be two hour sessions split into six age groups - the youngsters up to the age of eleven will each day get an hour of either mini-football or football coaching followed by an hour in a fun bouncy castle, while the teenagers will get an hour and a half of professional football coaching every day. There will be certificates and awards for every participant. Only twenty spaces are available in each age group so get your kids enrolled soon! The coaching will be done by a fully qualified English FA football coach who has years of experience in both professional football as well as coaching in Asia. The pitch at the Xplode Arena is high quality artificial turf with spectator areas and food and drinks facilities. The dates of the camps are; week one 19th to 23rd March, week two 1st to 5th April, and week three 22nd to 26th April. Sessions start at 8am for the youngest children progressing throughout the day, but avoiding the hottest part of the day. A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.... The whole shebang All of it; the whole thing. This is an American phrase, from the 1920s. The first question for those of us not living in the USA, and possibly quite a few that do, is, what’s a shebang? That isn’t so easy to answer. The earliest known citation of the word uses it as some form of hut or rustic dwelling. That’s in Walt Whitman’s Specimen Days, from Complete Poetry and Collected Prose, 1862: “Besides the hospitals, I also go occasionally on long tours through the camps, talking with the men, &c. Sometimes at night among the groups around the fires, in their shebang enclosures of bushes.” Some have speculated that there might be a connection between ‘shebang’ and the Irish word ‘shebeen’, which has a similar meaning to the ‘rustic dwelling’ above. There doesn’t seem to be any justification for that though and the words’ similarities appear to be just coincidental. Just a few years after Whitman’s poem, the Marysville Tribune, November 1869 printed a list of ‘The Idioms of Our New West’ and defined ‘shebang’ like this: “’Shebang’ is applied to any sort of house or office.” Soon after that, Mark Twain uses ‘shebang’ to refer to a form of vehicle - in Roughing It, 1872: “Take back your money, madam. We can’t allow it. You’re welcome to ride here as long as you please, but this shebang’s chartered, and we can’t let you pay a cent.” There are various ‘the whole’ expressions which derive from America - ‘the whole ball of wax’, ‘the whole nine yards’, ‘the whole box of dice’, ‘the whole shooting match’, ‘the whole enchilada’, ‘the whole kit and caboodle’ etc. Whilst these by and large refer to real objects, none of them represents ‘wholeness’ and they have just been tacked on to ‘the whole’ to make catchy phrases. ‘Shebang’ was also used that way - and that the

fact that people using it didn’t know what a shebang was didn’t really matter. It was simply a colourful way of saying ‘thing’. The word appears to have arrived fully formed in the 1860s. Prior to 1862, there are no examples in print. During the 1860s there are dozens of examples in US newspapers, literature etc. That ‘vehicle’ usage does suggest a possible link with the name for a form of early UK sightseeing bus, i.e. charabanc (pronounced sharra-bang). This derives from the French char-à-bancs - carriage with benches. Charabancs, affectionately known to passengers as ‘sharras’, were a commonplace in Britain from the introduction of horse-drawn examples in the early 1800s to as late as the 1970s. Could ‘shebang’ be a variant of ‘sharra-bang’? Well, it’s certainly possible, although the evidence to support that view is entirely circumstantial. In June 1872, the same year that Twain was using ‘shebang’ to mean vehicle, the Sedalia Daily Democrat printed a piece which used the name just to mean ‘thing’, and this is the earliest example of ‘the whole shebang’: “Well, the Democracy can flax [beat up] the whole shebang, and we hope to see our party united.”

Gary Gale, who is a self-described geo technologist, has probably made the day of every schoolboy after finding a number of rude place names across the globe. If you want a giggle you can access the ‘geographer’s’ Vaguely Rude Place Names Of The World map (http:// maps.geotastic.org/rude/) that contains destinations such as Nob Hill in San Francisco and Cumbum in India. If those places don’t take your fancy you may want to take a trip to Tit in Algeria, Arsoli, in Lazio, Italy or Slut in Sweden. ‘I’ve had a lifelong love affair with maps since discovering the Harry Beck map of the London Underground on the back of the London A-Z street atlas at an early age,’ Mr Gale said on his website. If this rude map is the culmination of a lifelong passion then we can all agree it was a worthwhile pastime.

One of the men had scooped a $75,000 (£48,000) Kansas lottery prize prior to the explosion in North Nevada Court in Wichita. The mishap was caused when one of the celebrating pair went to re-top butane torches that were being used as lighters for their bongs, according to police. While emptying the lighter fluid there was a leakage of butane and once the vapour touched the furnace light an explosion was caused. ‘He emptied a couple of big cans of butane lighter fluid during this, leaking butane into the air,’ Sgt Bruce Watts told the Wichita Eagle. ‘The butane vapour cloud reach a pilot light in the furnace and as you might expect – kaboom.’ A 27-year-old man was taken to hospital and suffered second-degree burns but is now said to be in a serious but stable condition. The brother of the injured man was detained at the house but swore he was innocent of any crime.

stories no vows for the gay lovers IN thailand By William Sparrow Valentine’s Day is full of romantic dreams, hopes and surprises for many loving couples and this past week’s holiday was no different for most in Thailand. However there was one couple that had their hopes dashed when they showed up to Bang Rak (English:’ Town of Love’) District’s municipal authority wanting to get a marriage license. Pallawee Jongtangsajjatham and Rungtiwa Tangkanopak were turned away by authorities who said the marriage and any such certificate are neither valid nor legal in Thailand because they are a lesbian couple. The couple weren’t alone having their dreams put on hold that day as many couples living happily in their Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transsexual (LGBT) alternative lifestyles descended on the Bang Rak District office that has long been the most popular office of eager couples to register their marriages. Still though, local law precludes gays and lesbians from formally registering their love and partnerships. Forty-seven year-old Khun Rungtiwa and Pallawee, 32, were disappointed but it was not completely unexpected - taking their relationship to the next level was always going to be a challenge. The women now plan to take their fight directly to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who

they hope will identify and embrace their cause, “The Prime Minister should understand the issue as she shares the same sex with us,” Khun Pallawee told reporters. The couple also said they would file a complaint with Thailand’s House of Representatives that will call for legislative action to ensure equal rights for all Thais seeking to make their vows in the eyes of the law.
Meanwhile, more than 1,000 traditional couples did register and take their vows at the Bang Ruk office on Valentine’s Day, which is quite the influx versus the office’s usual 30 couples per day average. Besides the special day and the aura of luck the district exudes in
its name alone, the prizes offered by the registry for the holiday also fueled the popularity. Police Captain Chukiat Jongsomboon, 35, and his new bride, 21 year old Janthima Thidawan, were the first couple to be awarded a “gold” marriage certificate worth some 9,000 Baht and a 1-million Baht life insurance policy. Eleven other lucky couples were awarded “gold” marriage certificates by the day’s end. Yet all the celebration and joy touted by local media only served as a sad reminder of what gay and lesbian couples are missing out on due to laws that limit their rights to express their love. It is sad because as any of us know here in Hua Hin, we work, dine, socialize and live together openly and comfortably every day. Thailand’s cultural acceptance and embrace of alternative lifestyles seems to be leaps and bounds ahead of many countries around the world. One has to hope that for Rungtiwa and Pallawee – and the many other couples like them – their politicians will step up and afford these people the right to have their love recognized as legal unions in the eyes of the law. holiday inn no more! TThe Holiday Inn Resort Regent Cha-am has been renamed the Regent Cha-am, ending a five-year management contract with the InterContinental Hotels Group. The Regent Group, owner of the 560-room hotel, decided to end its contract last month and opted to manage the 30-year-old property with its own team. Piyaman Tejapaibul, managing director of the Regent Group, said the overall hotel situation in Phetchaburi’s Cha-am district is changing significantly in terms of supply and demand. European tourists used to be the hotel’s key market, accounting for 60% of guests, but that proportion has been halved by the euro-zone
crisis. On the other hand, the number of Asian tourists has been rising enormously in line with the region’s robust economic growth. Foreign visitors, particularly Asians, are looking for quality and tailormade services. “A new trend is that hoteliers prefer management flexibility. International hotel chains have many conditions, so we need to change,” said Ms Piyaman. She is confident her hotel’s revenue will increase by 10% to 300 million baht this year even though it is no longer a part of an international chain. The Regent Group is spending 400 million baht to upgrade the hotel’s facilities including 19 function
rooms that will meet international standards for meetings, incentives and conventions. They also plan to build a condominium and a community mall or shop on 300 rai in Cha-am. zurich, switzerland As FIFA approved goal-line technology for use at the 2014 World Cup, experts predicted a dramatic increase in creative excuses for match officials disallowing perfectly legitimate goals.
