hua hin, THAILAND An appeal has gone out this week to ask anyone in the Hua Hin area to donate blood as there is a severe shortage generally, and in particular of the ‘O’ Rhesus negative type. Blood reserves are desperately needed for victims of road traffic accidents and day to day routine surgery at hospitals, and given the frequency of road accidents in particular as the Thai New Year approaches, this need is likely to increase; you never know when it could be you that needs blood so by helping others you may well be helping yourself.

The first step anyone considering giving blood should take is to check both their blood type and their own physical health - some conditions can preclude you from giving blood, and it is always wise to have a note of your blood type should you need blood in the future. Your regular hospital or clinic can advise you, or there are a number of specialists in the area you can go to, such as Health Lab Hua Hin. (Tel. 032 515920). Some things that may prevent you giving blood are if; you have a chesty cough, sore throat or active cold sore; you’re currently taking antibiotics or you have just finished a course within the last seven days or have had any infection in that last two weeks; you’ve had hepatitis or jaundice in the last 12 months; a member of your family (parent, brother, sister or child) has suffered with CJD (Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease). However please consult either your doctor or a specialist as you may still be able to donate.

Once you are certain you are fit to give blood you can do so at the Hua Hin Red Cross, next to the Tessaban in the centre of town, close to the main traffic lights on the road leading up to the railway station.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is.... Lick into shape To transform a faulty object or venture into something that works effectively.

You don’t need to watch many 1950s B-feature westerns before you come across some hapless cowpoke getting a ‘licking’. That use of ‘lick’, i.e. ‘thrash in a fight’, is pretty much restricted to the USA, although it did actually originate in England in the 1500s. Beating someone into shape sounds as though it might be the source of ‘lick into shape’ but it is in fact the common use of ‘lick’, i.e. ‘pass the tongue over’, a meaning that dates from a few centuries earlier, that the phrase alludes to.

The first example found of the figurative use of the phrase is in Gilbert Burnet’s An Exposition of the Thirtynine Articles of the Church of England, 1699: “Men did not know how to mould and frame it; but at last it was licked into shape.”

‘Lick into shape’ sprang from the belief held in mediaeval Europe that bear cubs were born shapeless and had to be made into ursine form by their mother’s licking.

This belief is recorded in a translation of Guillaume de Deguileville’s The Pylgremage of the Sowle. The fact that we have a printed recorded of this expression is something of a close call as de Deguileville’s text was one of the very first books printed, by William Caxton, around 1480. Caxton’s print suggests that the translation was made in 1413.

[Bears are born misshapen and are subsequently formed into their natural shape by the licking of their father and mother.]

That belief seems rather naive to us now, but it isn’t all that surprising in the context of the Middle Ages.

supernatural forces of all sorts was rife. The credence of stories of fabulous animals was strengthened by the printing of bestiaries. These were books that showed pictures of both real and imaginary creatures, so that the common people would know what they looked like.

One such bestiary was the Aberdeen Manuscript, circa 1542, which was made in order to: “improve the minds of ordinary people, in such a way that the soul will at least perceive physically things which it has difficulty grasping mentally: that what they have difficulty comprehending with their ears, they will perceive with their eyes.”

However, the writers of the books had little more knowledge than their audience. To them, a zebra was no more real than a unicorn. The authors merely lifted their pictures and explanations from earlier works without checking the facts.

The belief about bears wasn’t limited to England. In France, the same phrase is used, their version being a reference to an uncouth or badly brought up person - ‘un ours mal léché’, that is, ‘a bear badly licked’.

A record-breaking mosaic has been made from 85,794 Rubik’s Cubes.

Each was individually hand twisted and placed into a 67m (220ft) long and 4m (13ft) tall display showing the Macau skyline.

It has made it into the Guinness World Records as the ‘largest Rubik’s Cube mosaic ever created’.

The mosaic was designed by Toronto-based Cube Works Studio and took 90 days from design to completion.

Designer Josh Chalom, who has been creating art using Rubik’s Cubes for five years, worked with graphic architect Nick Hall, who made the blueprints for the designs.

Mr Chalom said he was inspired by the ‘brilliant architecture’ in China.

He added: ‘I wanted to create something monumental and breathtaking – the reaction that we’ve had from people has been amazing.’

stories A TRAGIC TALE IN THAILAND

By William Sparrow It was her stifled crying during the dark, early hours of morning that led local residents to summon police.

When they arrived they found a 20 year old foreign women curled up, clothes in tatters, holding herself and weeping. The night had been a horrible saga of rape and sexual abuse for the woman, but the tragic tale had just begun.

Events that have unfolded in the wake of that night over the last week are nothing short of the makings for a bad soap opera. This story however, has some very real tragedy that the key players are left trying to sort out.

In Thailand’s southern capital of Nakhon Si Thammarat, some 450 km (about 282 mi) south of Hua Hin, the gang rape of a young Scottish traveler at the hands of local men was alleged to have occurred last week.

Traveling here from her home in Scotland, the young woman had only been in Thailand for about two weeks and was in the process of applying for a position teaching local youths. She was excited at the opportunity the new job would offer her and she went out to celebrate with a fellow traveler, a young man she had become friends with.

The pair is reported to have got drunk at the restaurant they were at and were asked to leave. From there they tried to go to another bar but were refused entry for being too intoxicated. At this point the man decided to turn in for the night and left the Scottish woman on her own.

The next verifiable accounts come only after the discovery of the disheveled and distraught woman on the balcony of an unoccupied commercial property in a nearby neighbourhood by authorities.

Police began trying to piece together events based upon her complaint that she was taken there by as many as four local Thai men and raped by

at least two of them.

According to her report, she cried out screaming for help but must have been ignored by neighbours as her ordeal dragged on. Her inability to confirm elements of her story led to the first round of confusion as neighbours claimed they heard no screams, but did contact police when they heard the weeping of the woman in the early morning hours.

The horrible tale fractures here into an array of accounts that have been claimed, picked up,, reported and evidenced leading the case into disarray and confusion. Media reports from the Thai capital back to the UK gave accounts as varied as media were diverse. Western media decried uncaring neighbours who ignored the cries of a woman being brutally assaulted, while Thai media ran reports attesting to reports that there were no such cries for help.

The woman’s intoxication was factored into the story in a manner that might assign the blame to a variety of the individuals involved.

The woman’s mother lashed out at the varied reports, particularly one that claimed she had been escorted back to her shared room, saying, “He (the housemate) would have heard her... instead of these ignorant people not listening to the screams of a young woman being raped.”

She went on to say: “They go to the authorities and tell stories to make money to keep their country looking good and us Britons looking like drunken idiots.

“She does admit she was drunk but, believe me, my daughter was so happy with her new life about to begin in Thailand with a new job.

Why would anyone make up such stories to make themselves out to be foolish?”

Stop the presses because amid the entire calamity a 26 year old Thai man, Pongpat Po-soei was apprehended. The press was soon firing again on all cylinders as The

Sun reported that the ‘sex fiend’ had been captured, while The Scotsman told of his confession according to ‘sources’ – none of them official.

In the following days Thai media would report that Pongpat, who had now turned 25 years of age, had said his unsuccessful attempts to have sex with her were mutually consensual, but that she was too drunk to perform the act.

Police also uncovered someclosed circuit security video evidence from a nearby business which captured footage of the young lady stumbling to a fall, injuring herself and receiving assistance from Pongpat, confirming his account of events.

Whether it was a screaming crescendo or stifled cries the tale of tragedy slogs on. The gang rape has instead become one of Pongpat trying without success multiple times to have sex with her; the number of assailants varies; the young male fellow traveler has been scrutinised as a possible perpetrator, and police have struggled with what seemed at times to be an infinite number of accounts.

All parties involved appear to have some level of culpability, or at least grave irresponsibility, in the events of that night and the unhinged affair that has followed. Men Never Listen! (thanks to Karl) In a Chicago hospital, a gentleman had made several attempts to get into the men’s restroom, but it had always been occupied.

quiz scandal rocks cha am Cha Am expats were stunned this week to learn that the regular Monday night quiz at Blue Lagoon has been infiltrated by, and we have taken legal advice to write this, a team of cheaters!

One of the Cha Cha Bar quiz team were discovered using an I-pad and telephone during the quiz, and as any upstanding citizen knows, this cannot be tolerated at such esteemed events.

Following hard on the heels of the Lance Armstrong drug cheat scandal, and the Australian Olympic swimming team’s confessions, talks went on long into the night by the organisers of the quiz as to what suitable punishment should be handed down, not only to punish the

guilty but as a deterrent to anyone else considering such devious actions. A statement was issued this week revealing the penalty, as follows; “Following the outrageous and undisputed breaking of the quiz goers charter, we, the people of Cha Am, have decided to rename the offending bar’s pool team the ‘Cha Cha Cheaters’.”

So there you have it - the people of Cha Am taking the lead in swift and timely justice to rid their competitions of the spectre of unfair practices. The relevant authorities of the Cycling and Olympic federations would do well to take note!
