cha am, THAILAND Cha Am’s blossoming nightlife scene has taken a severe blow in the last month as the bars, restaurants and other related entertainment businesses in the vicinity of Soi Bus Station have been ordered to close by midnight or face fines and imprisonment.

It has not been made clear to the business owners we spoke to why this action has been taken or why it is being imposed selectively on only certain establishments, while others, notably those that cater to or are owned by Thais, are being left alone. According to the reports we have received, this action is being taken not by the police but by the local council (tessaban), and rumours abound as to the reason this action has been taken now, with fingers being pointed at one local bar who are believed to have blatantly flouted the allowed opening hours, triggering what is seen by the business owners and their customers as a somewhat heavy handed response.

This sort of response is familiar to owners of bars in Hua Hin, and AWOL has regularly reported on these occurrences which normally only happen during the high season; however this is the first time AWOL has become aware of Cha Am being affected, and the concern for businesses there is the knock on effect this will have, as customers choose to go somewhere that does not prematurely end their night out.

We have been told that in the area being targeted, roughly all the businesses serving alcohol within half a kilometre of Soi Bus Station have suffered a drop in takings of fifty percent or more, affecting both owners and staff, and this will inevitably also have an effect on taxi drivers, street food vendors and others who rely on the nightlife scene. A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is.... A whip round An impromptu collection of money from a group of people, in order to fund some joint enterprise.

The sad spectacle of the alcoholic ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne was reported in the UK press in February 2013, with the accompanying reports that his celebrity friends had organised a ‘whip round’ to fund his stay in a rehab clinic.

So, why is the collection of funds called a whip round?

This expression is very much ‘made in England’ as it derives from fox hunting, the British Army and parliament.

In 19th century foxhunts, people were employed to stop the hounds from straying by using whips to keep them in place. Such people became known as ‘whippers in’ or simply ‘whips’. This term has been perpetuated in the British House of Commons where the word ‘whip’ again does double duty, as it is both the name of the officers whose job it is to guide straying MPs into the voting lobbies, that is, to ‘whip up’ enthusiasm for a particular vote, and is also the name of the coercion process itself, which is called ‘the whip’.

Later in the 19th century, the term began to be used in military officers’ messes. John Camden Hotten described this in the 1864 edition of The Slang Dictionary: Whip, after the usual allowance of wine is drunk at mess, those who wish for more put a shilling each into a glass handed round to procure a further supply.

It doesn’t take much imagination to see how the process became known as a ‘whip round’. Although the process began in officers’ messes, it was used more widely whenever a request for group funding was made.

The first use of ‘whip’ in this wider context that can be found is in Thomas Hughes’ novel Tom Brown at Oxford, 1861: If they would stand a whip of ten shillings a man, they

might have a new boat.

The early use of ‘whip round’ was almost coincident with that of ‘whip’, as is found in this piece from a March 1863 edition of The Hampshire Advertiser, which gives a nice illustration of the use of the term to mean ‘a joint contribution to meet a small debt’: In our last week’s impression we stated that the balance in the hands of the committee for carrying out the Royal wedding festivities amounted to 30 shillings; it should have been threepence. Two or three bills were overlooked at the time, so that instead of a balance in hand it will require a ‘whip round’ to settle these bills.

[Note: the wedding being referred to was the marriage, at Windsor, of Edward Prince of Wales to Princess Alexandra of Denmark.]

It is perhaps a mark of social change in the UK that, although the expression originated in the English upper classes, it is now footballers rather than princes who merit a ‘whip round’. No record can be found of any collection to fund festivities when the present Prince of Wales was married at Windsor in April 2005.

Well, you wouldn’t be alone… but you would be wrong, it is claimed.

‘Beer goggles’ are a myth because we see each other no differently regardless of how much alcohol we have had. The part of the brain controlling sexual urges keeps going no matter how much we have drunk. It means our ability to assess someone’s attractiveness stays the same – until we pass out, that is.

‘We still see others basically as they are,’ said Dr Amanda Ellison, who conducted the study. ‘There is no imagined physical transformation – just more desire. Hangovers are caused by dehydration: the brain shrinks and tugs on the meninges. But before that, alcohol switches off the rational and decision-making areas of the brain while leaving the areas to do with sexual desire relatively intact.’

Dr Ellison, of the psychology department of Durham University, says it is a fluke of nature that the lust section of the brain – the oldest part – still functions in the face of booze. Her findings go against previous studies which have suggested people appear more attractive to others after they have had a drink.

Dumbarton, scotland Scotch whisky supply worth £500,000 accidentally poured down the drain Thousands of litres of Scotch whisky worth £500,000 has been lost after being accidentally washed down the drain at a bottling factory in Scotland.

About 18,000 litres (3,960 gallons) of the spirit was flushed out last week when the fluid was mistaken for waste water. Chivas Brothers of Dumbarton said it was investigating an ‘accidental loss’ after sewage workers reported the strong stench.

‘We are currently investigating an accidental loss on the February 26 at our Dumbarton site, where some spirit was released to the local water treatment plant,’ it said in a statement. ‘There has been no release of spirit to the River Leven or any other local water course. We have informed Scottish Water and all other relevant authorities.’

A Scottish Water spokesman said: ‘Staff at our waste water treatment works were already aware of a problem and were working to identify the source when contacted

‘Discharging large volumes of alcohol into the sewer network can have an adverse impact on waste water treatment processes, particularly during dry, cold weather.’ gatwick, england Thousands of dried caterpillars seized from luggage at Gatwick Airport British customs agents made a creepy discovery when an airline passenger was found with 94kg (14st 7lb) of caterpillars in his luggage.

The UK Border Force said that the man claimed they were intended as food for personal consumption.

Inspectors at London’s Gatwick Airport found the dried caterpillars shrink-wrapped in cellophane and packed into hessian bags carried by a passenger travelling from Burkina Faso via Istanbul.

The caterpillars were seized by authorities last month because they breached restrictions on importing animal products. The 22-year-old passenger was let off with a warning.

Border Force spokeswoman Ingrid Smith said: ‘This was an unusual seizure but the vigilance of our officers has stopped these dried insects from entering the UK, and possibly posing a risk to our food chain.

‘I would warn travellers not to attempt to bring any products of animal origin into the UK without a permit, as they may not have been inspected to appropriate standards and may contain diseases.’ bradford, england Batman hands over wanted man to police – then disappears The citizens of Bradford can rest a little easier today, safe in the knowledge that Batman is roaming the mean streets of the West Yorkshire city and handing out justice.

A man is due in court charged with handling stolen goods after the unknown vigilante – who was wearing the traditional superhero mask, body armour and cape – walked into a local police station and handed him over.

But the identity of the self-styled hero remains unknown and the police have put out CCTV images in the hope of tracking him down.

‘The person who brought the wanted man into the station was dressed in a full Batman outfit. His identity, however, remains unknown,’ a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said.

The incident happened at the city centre Trafalgar House station on February 25th. A man is now due to appear at Bradford magistrates court on March 8th.

By William Sparrow If a woman is over 27 years old and still single in China she gets the rather uncomplimentary label of a ‘leftover woman’ in society. It was the subject of a recent story covered by the BBC news service that proved to be wildly popular throughout the world. However, the report also cited that this does not mean the women are unhappy as many are finding their lives as professionals just as rewarding – if not more so – than in the traditional role of housewife.

The BBC spoke to Huang Yuanyuan who was working late at her job in a Beijing newsroom. Where she was also worrying that she will soon be having her 29th birthday, she explained, “Scary. I’m one year older,” she says. “I’m nervous because I’m still single. I have no boyfriend. I’m under big pressure to get married.”

Educated at a top Chinese university, Huang is a personable, confident and an independent young woman with her own apartment and many friends.

Yet, it is the Chinese view in a society that refers to her as a “sheng nu” or “leftover women”, that haunts her.

It is a view of her that she is selfconscience of with friends, fellow professionals and the ever important setting amongst family members.

The women are happy with their lives, but it is the societal view of

what is expected of their traditional role that pains them.

The story might be about Chinese women, but it stoked some interest as to how their female neighbors here in Thailand are fairing in an Asian society with similar viewpoints and traditions.

A key factor driving the new wave of single women in China and societies throughout the world for that matter as the article found was the increased opportunity for females in educational and professional advancement. This naturally leads to more successful careers and independence as women become upwardly mobile.

The same is true for Thai women in society and indeed right here in Hua Hin. This once sleepy beach community of not some long ago has experienced quite the boom in growth over the past decade or two. With that economic growth, expansion of commerce and emerging professional opportunities the young Thai women have also succeeded in advancing into new, more skilled and higher paying jobs.

Like elsewhere in the world this means that young women of Hua Hin become more self-reliant and independent while at the same time becoming less reliant on traditional roles and marriage to make a life for themselves.

Thai society has also proven to be more forgiving than more hard-lined

traditional cultures such as that found in China. Thus, women here are not feeling the pressure that some of their Asian counterparts are experiencing.

The result is many reasons to celebrate as Thai society proves to be growing toward a more professionalskilled workforce and society offering greater opportunities to the people. Women are enjoying a new sense of empowerment that allows them to explore choices not available to previous generations.

Finally to men, this means there are more single women because they not marrying quite as young as they would have years ago – but be warned, the men are going to have to work a bit harder to impress these young professional women of today’s Thai society.

A RAF Group Captain was about to start the morning briefing to his staff.

Whilst waiting for the coffee machine to finish its brewing, the Group Captain decided to pose a question to all assembled.

As many of us are now aware the recent Council led crackdown on opening hours is starting to hurt Many businesses in the area and not just the Beer Bars.

2013 Moto Guzzi California 1400 Custom First Ride Review The California Custom is a no frills stripped down version of the Touring with maximised handling capabilities. The big 1380cc V90 stomps out more than 120Nm of torque already from 2.500rpm and 96 horsepower @6.500rpm so this is a proper performance cruiser.

Compared to the California Touring the Custom is a much tighter and better handling beast. First of all the Custom has shed a whopping 22 kilos from losing its wind screen and assembly over the front and bags at the back. Particularly the front feels very solid on the Custom helped by a new drag bar.

The 740mm seat height is still on the comfortable side for the rider but obviously less so for the pillion as the “sport” seat follows the lines of the rear fender. The riding position

enthusiast in me goes for the Custom because of the fantastic handling and plush ride everywhere but on the motorway where it’s Touring all the way. The Custom is also faster because of the lighter weight and hence a bit more fun around town and a lot more fun in the mountains. The Custom’s front end feels like it belongs to a completely different bike despite having the same components. It’s all about the raised rear ride height and the shed of weight over the front.

Back in town again the Custom is king. The clutch is light and the turning radius is brilliant for such a big motorcycle. Balance is very near to perfection and I could roll to a complete standstill and be stood for a little while before putting a leg down. Moto Guzzi really has gone for handling perfection with the Custom. I really like this but can’t help but

is still a conservative fairly upright position with a slight inkling forward. Moto Guzzi could have gone a bit further here and made the riding position even more aggressive without hurting the riders comfort levels much. The same big comfy footboards from the Touring is also in place for the Custom.

The double rear suspension is new and raised for a more front biased ride compared to the Touring. The California Custom front end with its massive 46mm fork and double Brembo radial callipers is possibly the best front end on any cruiser or custom bike. It feels plush and tight at the same time and extremely sure footed for this type of motorcycle. If you like your motorcycle to handle well Moto Guzzi has gone for the overkill with the California Custom and it’s several notches better than the Touring and rock solid. If the Moto Guzzi California Custom doesn’t feature the best fork and brakes in its segment I’d be very surprised.

The choice between the Custom and the Touring should be a practical one but the

thinking that Guzzi have missed out on a trick where they could have gone more extreme in a few areas such as the riding position creating an uber cool city poser H-D style.

In terms of finish the fuel tank cut outs are great but both the front and rear fenders are made of plastic which isn’t cool at all. The LED lighting both front and back creates a very distinct styling and the Custom looks great at night cruising through the city. The double chromed exhaust looks great and on the Custom you can see that big 200mm rear tyre in all its glory. The wheels have Moto Guzzi painted in red on them and they look the business. But as with all Moto Guzzi’s it is of course the prominent V90 that is the main attraction and the Custom looks particularly muscular.

Conclusion The California Custom is something new from Moto Guzzi and as such it is a very impressive package. Traction control, ABS, Ride by Wire is all great functional electronics that you’ll learn to depend on. I’m disappointed however

Who wants to repaint plastic mudguards in the custom shop? On the Touring version this isn’t really an issue because the California Touring is something historic that should stay the way it was meant to be but the Custom should have iron. The handling is fantastic and as I stated I believe the California Custom has the best front end in the business. The radial Brembo brakes are nothing less than fantastic. The low seat height with a comfy seat and an easy to reach drag bar is great stuff. On the motorway the Custom obviously suffers compared to the Touring on a cold day but on a warm day it shouldn’t matter much at all with plenty of wind in your face. Moto Guzzi have created yet another great motorcycle with the Custom and now all we have to do is to wait for people to start customising them properly. I can’t wait to see the results.

Venezuela deny using United defeat to ‘bury bad news’
