thai tourism soars in first two months of 2013
hua hin, THAILAND Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports reported, late last week, travel arrivals to Thailand soared 18.81%, January to February, which raised the performance over the first two months to more than 4.5 million visits. For the first two months of the year, the country welcomed 4,569,481 visits over 3,845,894 visits during the same period in 2012. In February alone, 2,328,297 international tourists visited Thailand up 25.60% from 1,853,736 visits over the same month last year. All regions except Africa and the Middle East reported gains. The major contributor East Asia, which includes ASEAN, improved 43.45% to 1,272,087 visits from 886,755 visits. China’s growth is incredible, with an increase of over 90% from 381,515 visits in January and February 2012 to 725,796 this year. Hong Kong grew 106.74% to 46,820, while Brunei posted a growth of 59.46%. Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan recorded an improved performance at 49.41%, 28.28%, 26.16% and 17.07% respectively. European visitors also modestly increased with even the UK posting a 3.33% increase, while Russia topped the charts with a 22.25% increase. Germany and Sweden also made healthy gains of around 13%. While there is no breakdown available showing where within Thailand these tourists headed, anecdotal evidence certainly suggests a sharp increase in the number of Russian visitors to Hua Hin as the most noticeable, although there is also some signs of the Chinese surge as well. Many business owners have also commented that there appears to have been less British people here this high season. The March figures will make interesting reading though as many businesses are reporting a significant drop in customer numbers presently. However this may be offset by the Songkran festivities in April (officially from 13th to 17th).

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.... In a nutshell In a few words; concisely stated. The meaning of the phrase ‘in a nutshell’ is fairly easy to deduce. Anything that could be written in so few words that it would fit into a nutshell would have to be brief and to the point. The first text that was supposed to be enclosed in a nutshell was far from small. Pliny the Elder recorded an event, which he apparently believed to be genuine, in Natural History, the original of which was written in AD 77 and was translated into English in 1601 by Philemon Holland, who included explanatory notes, like this: We find in Histories almost incredible examples of sharpness of the eyes. Cicero hath recorded, that the poem of Homer called the Iliad, written on parchment, was enclosed within a nutshell. The same writer maketh mention of one who could see to the distance of 135 Miles. Almost incredible? The Iliad is about 700 pages of A4 text and in Homer’s day would have been written on clay tablets. This story seems to be an early example of Chinese whispers, long before that term was invented. Holland was translating a piece by the Roman author Pliny the Elder, who had been told by someone that Cicero had seen a minutely written version of a text by the Greek author Homer. Shakespeare, who often took themes from the classics, alluded to the ‘something compact’ idea of ‘nutshell’ when he gave Hamlet the line: I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count myself a king of infinite space, were it not that I have bad dreams. The figurative use of ‘in a nutshell’ to mean specifically ‘in few concise words’ didn’t emerge until the 19th century. Thackeray used it in print in The Second Funeral of Napoleon, 1841:

Here, then, in a nutshell, you have the whole matter. Squeezing books as long as the Iliad into a nutshell was beyond the capability of an ancient Greek with a stylus, but modern nanotechnology has made it straightforward. The Bible seems to be the book that people favour these days for microminiaturization. Many versions exist that would fit inside a walnut shell, and some readable (with a microscope) texts can fit on a pinhead. Another nut related phrase is Driving Me Nuts This is to be greatly frustrated or annoyed. The word “nuts” is sometimes replaced by the words crazy, bonkers, bananas, insane, or up the wall. The meaning remains unchanged, however. People get annoyed, and when they can no longer tolerate anymore, they might shout this common idiom to express their frustrations. According to the Word-Detective, in the mid-1800s, the word “nut” was slang to mean a person’s head, and not long after that, it acquired the meaning of someone not being right in the head. We can see an early example of this from The Bilioxi Daily Herald, a newspaper printed in 1884. The phrase is written under an advice column from a woman named Ann Landers: “DEAR ANN LANDERS: I am a boy, 18 years old, a high school senior, and my dad is driving me nuts! He has read a lot about drugs and is scared to death I might be trying something.” Just for good measure we’ll finish on a joke; A man walks into a doctor’s office wearing nothing and completely covered in cling film wrap. A US TV channel has courted controversy by casting an actor who looks remarkably like president Barack Obama to play the Devil on the hit show The Bible. Viewers noticed straight away that Satan looked a lot like the world leader in the History Channel’s popular show, which aired on Sunday in the US. Undercover Thailand: Sex, Sin and Smiles
LGBT PRIDE WEEK FROM AFAR By William Sparrow Hua Hin has a colourful and vibrant alternative lifestyle community but does not currently hold a ‘pride week’ celebration, leaving it instead to tourist beacons like Bangkok, Phuket or Pattaya. Locals of the LGBT community will recognise the event and offer their support with drink and bar specials, albeit much more toned down and laid back than the events to be held elsewhere in the country. Asking about what if any celebrations will be held in Hua Hin got a somewhat thin response from bar owners and residents who support the lifestyle. Bars that cater specifically to the gay and lesbian community gave noncommittal responses about holding drink specials, some snacks or the like. Mostly though, questions were met with the simple reaction of, “Hua Hin doesn’t have it - go to Phuket.” This theme would continue when city officials or police representatives were approached, who would ultimately come to the same conclusion. When queried as to why Hua Hin doesn’t have a party or festival celebrating gay pride, an official for Hua Hin Province, who preferred to remain anonymous said it was largely a matter of the math saying that there are, “Not enough tourists and money,” to support the event at this time. Instead, the option recommended by locals is this year’s Phuket Pride Week themed ‘Same Same Not Different’ and will be held from April 22-28. For the second year in a row now it is being organised by The Phuket Loves You Club (PLU), who released a statement saying, “Men are different from women, and children are different from adults, but we are all human beings and all deserve to have the same rights and be respected in the same way. Therefore, we are ‘Same Same Not Different’”. The aim of the Pride Week events and celebration is to bring together the community in its entirety including gay, straight, transgendered, undecided – Thais and foreigners. All are alike and all are welcomed.
Chairman of PLU Ian Philips said, “Last year we raised over 300,000 Baht for Phuket LGBT and HIV charities and created a fun week for everyone,” that attracted more than 30,000 people watching and participating in the revelry through the streets of Patong. “This year we intend to build on that success, attract many more people, raise even more money for charities, deliver more value to our sponsors and supporters, and ensure that we continue to promote the message of safe sex, while spreading this year’s theme message.” Philips said. For this year then the options are recovering and relaxing after the lively events of the annual New Year’s Songkran (April 13-15) water festival here in Hua Hin; or heading south to Phuket to what is sure to be an exciting week of festivities celebrating the diversity of the LGBT community. As many of long term residents of Hua Hin know, our little city is quickly growing and if the future outlook for growth remain on track it won’t be long until Hua Hin is celebrating a pride week of its own. disaster drills South Korea and Thailand will jointly host military-led disaster relief exercises in Cha Am with ASEAN nations, the United States, Russia and the European Union, in an effort to improve the region’s capacity for a multinational disaster relief response, a Seoul official said Monday. The four-day drills are scheduled to begin on May 7, and are the third of their kind since the 27-nation ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), Asia’s top security forum, launched the biennial multinational maneuver in 2009. About 2,000 personnel from the ARF are expected to take part in the disaster relief drills, said Oh Youngju, the deputy director-general at the bureau of development cooperation
at Seoul’s foreign ministry. “This year’s objective is to advance and build the capacity of ARF members in civil-military coordination efforts in response to disasters,” Oh said in a statement. “Also, various scenarios will be practiced to further advance the progress in multinational disaster response capabilities made during the last two exercises.” South Korea plans to send about 100 government officials, 100 military personnel and military cargo planes to this year’s drills, Oh said. Disaster relief has been one of the key topics of the ARF since a tsunami swept through the region in late 2004, killing 220,000 people in a dozen countries.

Advertise here from only 40 baht per week things to see CHA AM attractions near cha am Mrigadayavan Palace (The Palace of love and hope) Mrigadayavan Palace is a beautiful teak seaside palace built by King Rama VI, located on Bang Kra beach between Cha-Am and Hua Hin. Completed in 1924, this summer palace was built by King Rama VI as a summer getaway. 399 metres long, supported by 1,080 concrete pillars, there are 16 buildings of golden teak, in Thai-Victorian style, all connected by elevated airy walkways designed to catch the breezes from all directions. The palace is divided into 3 usage areas. The first as you enter is the audience hall for business and entertainment, then you enter the men’s quarters, including the King’s personal rooms, and finally the ladies quarters. Unfortunately no photographs are allowed in both the Kings and Queens personal rooms. Two very long corridors lead off from the main building to two beach pavilions, one for the King and one for the ladies. The King’s pavilion has a large cross on the top, used to signal the King’s activities by the use of coloured lanterns. Another small building at the rear of the palace shows life in the serving quarters. The Palace is open every day, except Wednesdays, from 08.30 until 16.30. Entrance to the palace costs 30 Baht for both Thais and foreigners. A guide book (in both Thai and English) is available at the entrance shop for 50 baht. Bicycles can be rented for 20 Baht next to the car park to explore the grounds outside the palace further. There is also a nature trail through a replanted mangrove swamp with wooden walkways, a bird spotting tower, a statue of Rama VI and another smaller teak house, the Chao Phraya Ramrakop residence.

Dress restrictions apply - so no shorts, short skirts or totally sleeveless T-shirts are allowed. Sarongs and T-shirts are available for those who turn up wearing any of the above just before you enter the building. Also no shoes are allowed to be worn, but you are given a bag to carry them around with you, so you can put them on again when exiting the building at the other end. The Palace is located on the beach within the Rama VI military camp, 10 km south of Cha am, 14 km north of Hua hin, just off the main Petchkasem Road. The palace is signposted as Mareukatayawan Palace. To get to the Palace itself, you have to enter the military camp, so first you have to go to the guard post (for some reason , if you are on a motorbike, you have to get off and walk past the guards, both when entering and exiting) then just follow this road for a couple of km until you get to the car park, where the entrance to the palace is.

stoke, england Michael Owen’s retirement from professional football is on hold due to a further vocal injury setback, according to reports. The former England striker had been due to make a statement earlier today regarding his future when a recurrence of a long-standing vocal chord problem stopped him in his tracks.
