hua hin, THAILAND The annual sporting spectacle of the Hua Hin Cricket Sixes began today with a record number of teams participating. Backed in recent years by the Bangkok Post, this year’s event boasts 21 teams, with entrants from Australia, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Thailand. All the action takes place at the traditional venue of the polo grounds at the beachside Dusit Thani Hotel and continues until 10th April.

The usual strong Australian presence features regulars Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), Euroa, Cluden, Willsmere Wanderers and Gold Coast Tigers, and is boosted further by three new teams: Baden Powell and Western Plains from Victoria and the Perth-based Black Swans.

The Indonesian contingent features Lardna Follies, who won the Masters two years ago, and Larngna Follies, playing in the Veterans division, plus newcomers Bali Senia . Narayanganj Cricket Association from Bangladesh are also first time participants and feature former national-level cricketers in their ranks.

The hopes of the home nation appear to lie with the Thai Thevada and Thailand Colts teams, with the latter particularly fancied to do well this year. The Hua Hin Hop A Longs will also be there as usual lead by the indomitible Tom Duzanika, although this year lacking a stalwart of the event, Colin Devonshire, who will be sorely missed, although hopefully able to attend some of the matches.

The Sixes celebrates it’s eighteenth year of competition this year, and it’s popularity grows with every year. While some of the competition is deadly serious, the fun and entertainment is also there in abundance, particularly when the local team are playing (on the 6th, 7th and 8th for sure). If you can hold a bat and stand up you may even be asked to play for them!

This week it is.... A sledgehammer to crack a nut To use ‘a sledgehammer to crack a nut’ means to use disproportionate force or expense to overcome a minor problem.

Sledgehammers are large iron hammers which were first used in England in the 15th century. ‘Sledge’ was the original name of this form of hammer; so ‘sledgehammer’ is something of a tautology. ‘Sledging’ has recently reappeared as a verb form in the previously refined and gentle world of cricket, where it means the browbeating or harassment of batsmen by the fielders.

‘Sledges’ were an English invention but this phrase wasn’t - it first saw the light of day in 1850s America.

‘A sledgehammer to crack a nut’ is one of the many versions of the phrase, the others having faded into disuse. The spelling of ‘sledgehammer’ hasn’t yet settled down and is still making the usual progression of hyphenated words pairs, i.e. from ‘sledge hammer’ to ‘sledge-hammer’ and eventually ‘sledgehammer’. The OED prefers the hyphen, but ‘sledgehammer’ is now the more common spelling.

Pretty well anything which is small and easy to squash

has come verbally under the hammer, typified by nuts and insects. These have included peanuts, walnuts or just nuts; also gnats, flies, mosquitoes etc. The first to fall victim was the humble fly, as in this piece from The Gettysburg Compiler, June 1878: “Don’t worry over little ills of life. It is like taking a sledge hammer to kill a fly.”

Nuts came into the picture a little later, specifically peanuts; for example, this from The Reno Weekly Gazette And Stockman, May 1893: “We know some men who are always looking for a sledge hammer to crack a peanut.”

Insects and nuts seem to have become combined in the later ‘sledgehammer to kill a gnat’ version; for example, Grosvenor B. Clarkson’s Industrial America in The World War, 1923: “The Board never used a sledgehammer to kill a gnat.”

Strangely, although the common form is now ‘a sledgehammer to crack a nut’, the first examples of that in print date from as late as the 1950s. Whether our current usage derived as a rewording of the ‘crack a peanut’ or the ‘crack a gnat’ version isn’t clear - perhaps something of both?

By William Sparrow “Seventeen-fifty,” the svelte bar mistress coyly demanded, causing me to choke on the rocks drink she had just handed me.

‘Baht’? I thought, knowing this to be wrong considering I had just landed in Manhattan. Welcome back to the west I surmised as I peeled off a twenty-dollar note from my billfold.

It was back some weeks later nursing a drink on Petchkasem Road – sweet home, Hua Hin – that I started to consider my 90 Baht drink much more carefully. The reality of the idyllic hideaway that is Hua Hin was changing.

“I ride down south to Khao Takiab, and they got that awesome, fresh beachfront seafood market,” a friend tells me, “and I ask to buy some ‘hoi’ (shellfish).” He laments as we often do.

“Two-fifty, she says,” he’s exacerbated, telling me, “I’m speaking Thai to her – proper – she must know I’ve been here for awhile, I’m not a [freaking] tourist!

Two-fifty?!”

My friend did what many of the ‘long-liners’ here do and sent his [Thai] girlfriend back to snatch the hoi, which she did – for 120 Baht.

His experience is a telling example in the grand scheme of things that we as foreigners living here for several years or more often encounter. It has been the budget traveler (over

In recent weeks there have been rumblings from Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s office about the need for Thailand to focus on the luxury tourist sector, bringing more well-heeled big spenders to the country. These currently and historically account for less than 20% of the money being earned by the Thai tourism industry. If the effort was as simple as just advertising Thailand’s natural and already developed rich

offerings to visitors then it would be fine. However these plans, as they so often do, are actually a myriad of capital development efforts including attracting investment from foreign organisations to develop more lavish high-end resort properties.

In many ways this seems great too as many believe it will result in huge gains for under or undeveloped real estate, create jobs building those lavish resort properties and the jobs that come later for staffing them.

The downside is the trickledown effect it naturally has on the economy at large. Mom and pop shops, small businesses and the common man generally do not reap much – if any – benefit. Part of those results for the common man, especially including long term foreigners living here on a fair to median budget, are left watching as prices skyrocket for them, all because of that minority, rich traveler to be further dazzled by Amazing Thailand.

It can also potentially result in what might be a dangerous shift for the Thai tourism industry by pricing themselves out of the market for budget travellers, the very people who have built the country into a global powerhouse for tourism.

DROWNING LAWYER George Bush, Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso have all died. Due to a glitch in the celestial time-space continuum, all three arrive at the Pearly Gates more or less simultaneously, even though their deaths have taken place decades apart.

The first to present himself to Saint Peter is Einstein.

Saint Peter questions him.

“You look like Einstein, but you have no idea the lengths certain people will go to, to sneak into Heaven under false pretenses. Can you prove who you really are?”

Einstein ponders for a few seconds and asks, “Could I have a blackboard and some chalk?” Saint Peter complies with a snap of his fingers. The blackboard and chalk instantly appear.

Einstein proceeds to describe with arcane mathematics and symbols his special theory of relativity. Saint Peter is suitably impressed.

“You really are Einstein! Welcome to heaven!”

The next to arrive is Picasso. Once again Saint Peter asks for his credentials. Picasso doesn’t hesitate. “Mind if I use that blackboard and chalk?” Saint Peter says, “Go ahead.”

Picasso erases Einstein’s scribbles and proceeds to sketch out a truly stunning mural. Bulls, satyrs, nude women: he captures their essences with but a few strokes of the chalk. Saint Peter claps.

“Surely you are the great artist you claim to be! Come on in!”

The last to arrive is George Bush. Saint Peter scratches his head. “Einstein and Picasso both managed to prove their identity. How can you prove yours?”

Bush looks bewildered, “Who are Einstein and Picasso?”

Saint Peter sighs, “Come on in, George.”

Quite simply, the market here is HUGE and is considered to be one of the biggest in Thailand, outside of Bangkok.

People travel from all over the region to visit the Wednesday Night Market, which is located outside Cha Am railway station.

What is normally a sleepy seaside resort positively comes alive from about 5pm on a Wednesday evening and by 8pm the market is in full swing. At the market you can buy almost everything and anything!

The night market is popular with both Thai’s and foreigners and it is a great place to get a real insight into Thai life, as well as giving you the perfect opportunity to pick up a bargain or two. At the night market you can expect to find hundreds of stalls selling a wide variety of unusual and interesting items such as souvenirs, clothing, footwear, electronic goods, Thai handicrafts, traditional Thai foods, exotic fruits and even pets!

It is fair to say that some of the products sold here might not always be genuine, particularly where electronic goods, CD’s or DVD’s are concerned.

However, the market can be a great place to buy clothing or household products such as soap, toiletries or other items like brushes or mops, many of which are available much cheaper than if you were to buy them in the local supermarket.

Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, Cha Am’s Wednesday Night Market can be a great place to casually wander around and soak up the vibrant, friendly and unique atmosphere.

The beer bars on the left side after the main entrance are also a well known meeting point for the expats. They like to congregate, sit down and have a couple of beers, whilst their wives or girlfriends go and peruse the hundreds of market stalls in search of that all important bargain.

Generally speaking, Cha Am’s Wednesday Night Market is one attraction that you really shouldn’t miss out on and is well worth visiting should you be in the area.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

The author of this new section will be familiar to some of the older hands in Hua Hin from her scribblins in the Observer as we welcome Mags to AWOL with her unique perspective of life in Thailand and the UK. Mags lived in Hua Hin from 1999 and left for the UK in 2005, eventually returning to her hometown Hull in 2011. She has been back to Hua Hin a few times since she left, giving her a great insight into how Hua Hin and Thailand is changing, juxtaposed with life in the UK.

celebrate In the good old days of Don Muang airport there were beautifully carved wooden signs above the entrance tunnels as you disembarked.

‘Welcome to the Land of Smile’. And the sight of one certainly always made me smile. Not only because it was - and still is - always good to be back, but because of the quirkiness of the grammar, which epitomises the Land of Smile.

I often wondered if whoever carved the signs got to keep his job, but suspect that he did. After all - what’s the problem with a small mistake like that? This is Thailand - quirks and all.

Which is one of the endearing qualities of the place. While trying to embrace what they see as the best aspects of western culture, there are many more customs, rituals, beliefs and strange little ways which are so ‘Thai’ that the average westerner can be left totally bemused.

How often do we hear the phrase ‘is Thai way’? Which roughly translated means ‘that’s the way we do it - we don’t need a reason’.

And one thing Thai people certainly don’t need a reason for is a celebration. Whether it be a festival, fair or market, or a Buddha day, there is always something going on.

Often events are organised at very short notice, and news of them spread just by word of mouth. This impromptu nature not only reflects the need to party, and to do it now, but can also be partly explained by the

climate. Flower decorations have to be made at the last minute. Crops can create sudden surpluses. Someone might suddenly find it is their turn to have that huge cinema screen with which to block the Soi.... it’s a dry night - why not?

Other attractions, like the Chonburi buffalo races, and numerous colonies of monkeys, have been purposely developed to appeal to tourists. But when it comes to making the most of a natural resource, Songkran has to beat the lot.

An ancient fertility right originally imported from India, the true meaning of Songkran is a perfect mix of sanuk - fun - and sa-ngob - serenity. It is a time to show respect by gently sprinkling Buddha images, and the hands of elders and friends, with flower petal scented water, and to dab a powdery liquid called namob onto faces.

It may be us westerners who are really to blame for the escalation of Songkran into a water fuelled version of Blazing Saddles. It may simply be a marketing ploy by the makers of plastic water guns, which always seem to have a built in obsolescence. Whatever it is there are only two options for a farang at Songkran. Either go with the flow or hibernate.

I tend to go with the flow. It is fun to join in the processions, and a welcome change from straight laced Western rules to see the Police happily getting their fair share of water along with everyone else. It is also of course that time of the year when it can actually feel comfortable to be soaked to the skin all day.

But as we all know there is always a price to pay, and at Songkran especially that price is paid on the roads.

Despite the almost non stop round of festivals and special days, together with more Bank Holidays than you can shake a fist at, the majority of Thai people get very few days off. So when Songkran arrives there is a rush to get home to their families for the holiday. Sadly there seems to be no way to deal with the resulting situation, which is now seen as almost inevitable. It really is a ‘Thai way.’

So stay safe and dry, or stay safe and enjoy!

di banio Di Canio refutes fascist claims by banning anyone who disagrees with him

sunderland, england New Sunderland manager Paulo Di Canio has moved to address concerns he is a fascist by banning anyone who claims he is a fascist.

With many fans of the club still keen to understand if they have borderline dangerous nutjob in charge of their team, reporters have repeatedly asked Di Canio to comment on his previous statements in support of a fascist ideology.

However Di Canio has refused to answer such questions, before telling the remaining journalists, “If I was a fascist would I ban journalists who asked questions I didn’t like, or who wrote stories I hadn’t given my full approval for?”

“Just because I don’t want you to have the freedom to write what you want, doesn’t make me a fascist.”

“We’ll get along just fine as long you do exactly as I say and behave how I want you to.”
