hua hin, THAILAND We don’t often cover serious national issues in AWOL, but the recent heart rending story of the Tongchum family in Bangkok, whose daughter Jiji went missing in 2010, highlights both a national and international issue that has been going on unhindered, and in Thailand’s case, unmonitored, for far too long.

There are no official figures released by the Thai authorities regarding the number of children that go missing every year, and this is due in some part to the fact that there is no crime attached to someone going missing here. As a result, authorities are often slow to take serious action, or they may take action only when they suspect that a missing person may be the victim of a crime.

Officially the statistics show that only 1,168 people of all ages have disappeared since 2002 in Thailand, 138 having been found. Compared with Britain, which has a similar sized population to Thailand, records show that 200,000 missing persons reports are filed each year. In the UK it is estimated that a child goes missing every three minutes, although 99% of these are found; however that still means approximately 1750 children go missing and are not found every year. Experts say that in Thailand the figures are higher, with the fate of these missing children often thought to be prostitution or slave labour, as well as being trafficked abroad or having their organs harvested.

You may not think that this kind of thing exists in Hua Hin, but the next time you are approached by one of the very young flower sellers, ponder where this child has come from - they may not be Thai and may have been trafficked to Thailand, but either way distraught parents somewhere will be trying to pick up the pieces of their lives.

By Roger Norwood Eating on the streets is something that Thais do as a matter of course, part of their daily routine. It is very common here to see rudimentary dining facilities spread out over any free space on the pavement or elsewhere, with plastic stools and fold away tables appearing as if by magic when customers turn up.

The weather in Thailand is obviously more conducive to this activity than it is in Europe and some other western countries, as well as an apparent lack of regulations which prevent this kind of thing overseas, normally because of ‘health and safety’.

Holding a conversation was difficult but the food was normally delicious in spite of the undoubted coating of grime it was receiving from the passing buses, trucks and cars.

Another hugely popular eating facility in Thailand is the Food Court, found at almost every supermarket where you exchange cash for some form of token (such as at Hua Hin Market Village), and a relatively new one has opened on Soi 88, just over the railway crossing and behind the 7-11 on the left. A huge array of food is available at these facilities, at very cheap prices, and sometimes

you will find surprises, such as the kebabs available in Market Village, or the Falafels and other Middle Eastern food available in Soi 88.

They are great people watching venues as well as being an integral part of Thai social life, and seem to be the equivalent of the village pub that you find in the UK. And yes, there is normally beer and other alcohol available should you want it!

‘Eating out’ in most western countries is still regarded as an occasional luxury because the price is normally quite high, but more often than not in Thailand, it is as cheap if not cheaper than cooking for yourself at home, and is one of the reasons that many expats and tourists love this country - long may that continue.

japan Eyeball-licking: The new craze in Japan making teenagers ill A bizarre new craze has sprung up in Japan where teenagers have begun licking their partner’s eyeballs as a sign of affection. The practice, known as oculolinctus, is thought to have been inspired by the Japanese band Born and their video Spiral Lie, which features a slowmotion scene of eyeball-licking.

Health professionals have been quick to criticise the new trend, after Japanese schools reported a rise in the number of children suffering from eyelid infections and conjunctivitis. Dr Robert Cykiert, from the New York University Langone Medical Center said: ‘When you get licked on the eye, you’re transferring dangerous bacteria. It is a very dangerous trend to say the least.’

He added: ‘[People] may have scarring of the cornea that can be permanent depending on the bacteria in germs… it may cause a perforation or hole to develop.’

Dr Cykiert warned teenagers against taking part in the trend just to prove their love for their partner and advised they should instead stick to ‘hand holding and kissing, stuff that’s been around for millions of years’.

Daily, weekly or long term The Pilots One day at a busy airport, the passengers on a commercial airliner are seated, waiting for the cockpit crew to show up so they can get under way. The pilot and co pilot finally appear in the rear of the plane, and begin walking up to the cockpit through the center aisle. Both appear to be blind. The pilot is using a white cane, bumping into passengers right and left as he stumbles down the aisle, and the co pilot is using a guide dog. Both have their eyes covered with huge sunglasses.

At first the passengers do not react; thinking that it must be some sort of practical joke. However, after a few minutes the engines start spooling up and the airplane starts moving down the runway. The passengers look at each other with some uneasiness, whispering among themselves and looking desperately to the stewardesses for reassurance.

Then the airplane starts accelerating rapidly and people begin panicking. Some passengers are praying, and as the plane gets closer and closer to the end of the runway, the voices are becoming more and more hysterical. Finally, when the airplane has less than 20 feet of runway left, there is a sudden change in the pitch of the shouts as everyone screams at once, and at the very last moment the airplane lifts off and is airborne.

Up in the cockpit, the co pilot breathes a sigh of relief and turns to the Captain: “You know, one of these days the passengers aren’t going to scream, and we’re gonna get killed!”

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

bar hopping (part two) Turning a Thai house into a bar can be a daunting task, but with The Ship we had the advantage of a loyal mamasan who, together with ladyboy ‘Gerry’ as she was known, had chosen to come along with us from the Hare and Hounds for the ride.

The two of them soon took over the basic cleaning out, while workmen were recruited to carry out some very necessary alterations, including the removal of a urinal from the kitchen. To be fair much of the cleaning was delegated to Gerry, while mamasan supervised and made the important decisions, such as where the shrine should go. There are some things farang simply aren’t capable of and should avoid interfering with, and the siting of a shrine is one of them. Another is to heed the warnings and leave those shiny gold dots arranged in pyramid shapes on doors intact.

Just those 13 short years have seen a major change in what people expect from bars - not to mention housing - in Hua Hin. Some of the most popular watering holes in Pattaya have been little more than shacks, while Soi Zero in Bangkok did pretty well, despite its’ location next to a railway line and it’s rutted road, and the more recent demise of Washington Square caused outrage and grief.

The tried and tested formula still worked in Hua Hin, where one of the most popular expat bars, Little Big Horn, was little more than a pathway, with a collection of tables and chairs on one side and a small bar on the other. Another bar, Coconuts (seen below as it was more recently), was a testament to re-cycling with its’ dayglo coconut shells and driftwood. In fact the place was so packed with ‘stuff’ that most customers were happy to sit outside along its’ concrete steps, where cushions were thoughtfully provided.

So there was still no real need to make a bar look too smart. These days we would probably call the desired effect ‘shabby chic’. Then it was a quick fix, which

preferably left the character of a Thai house intact.

Apart from the urinal in the kitchen of course. Although there is still one famous bar in Bangkok that many of you will know, Cheap Charlies, which didn’t possess a toilet at all for many years. Even when that much needed facility was finally installed a sign on the door warned ‘piss - no shit’.

There are still a few places in Hua Hin which retain the old world charm of treacherous cobweb infested toilets, and kitchens which would drive any self respecting Western health and safety inspector to suicide. I still love them. Unfortunately many tourists don’t.

As I recall one of the first bars to recognise that there could be a demand for air-conditioned plush faux velvet subtly lit ambiance, was a large place at the front of the Grand Plaza whose name escapes me. In 2000 it had the biggest screen ever seen in Hua Hin, apart from those which appear now and then to purposely block the roads. It was a very comfortable place in which to relax with a cold beer and watch music DVDs, without a hint of traffic noise, fumes, or flower vendors. But perhaps because of its’ location it didn’t last for very long.

Despite its’ popularity amongst Thais and expats, the Grand weekend market was still considered to be quite far enough to venture out of town. With the exception of those few brave souls who lived in either Sport Villa or the Condo Chain, there was really nothing else to draw people any further than the Grand, and those who did go to its’ market tended to just eat, shop, and go home.

Meanwhile the quick fix to the Ship ambled along in Thai Time. It has to be said that Thai people can be very skilled when it comes to tiling. Less so when it comes to resolving plumbing problems, or installing electrical wiring. The abundance of farang property developers these days do deserve recognition when they are able to get it right. Often it isn’t easy. Most of the time it is frustrating. Without exception it requires constant surveillance to ensure that work is carried out to specification.

There is a Yorkshire saying - ‘If tha wants a job doin’ reet, do it theesen.’ Which roughly translated means that others can’t be trusted to do a job as well as you can do it yourself. This does of course assume that you have the necessary skills to do the job in the first place, and was never intended to take account of Thailands’ work permit regulations.

Nevertheless many farang bar owners did a spot of DIY behind closed shutters, and probably still do.
