hua hin, THAILAND It has become quite a common complaint in recent years that Hua Hin Beach is not as clean as it should be, partially due to the amount of debris washed ashore from the numerous fishing boats, but also due to the litter habits of both Thais and foreigners. Now an enterprising group have started organising regular events to encourage volunteers to keep the beach clean, and the second such event takes place this Saturday 6th July, from 4.30 to 6pm, weather permitting.

The 2nd Hua Hin Cleaning Beach has been put together by iLikeHuaHin (website www.ilikehuahin.com) following their first mission at the beginning of June. They will provide gloves and plastic bags, and run the event as a game, where teams of three people work together, with the team collecting the most waste (measured in kilogrammes) getting the reward of a free drink for each participant of the winning team at the Ask For Moon Bar (beer, bacardi or soft drink).

The area to be cleaned is from the Hilton Hotel to Paleo Bar and back to Ask For Moon Bar (in front of Hilton Hotel), and everyone who wishes to join in should meet on the beach in front of the Hilton Hotel. After the clean up has finished and the winning team announced, the group can then go for some ‘Chilling Time’ at the Ask For Moon Bar, open until late.

If the weather is unsuitable, the event will be postponed to the following Saturday, and this information will be on the group’s Facebook page (www. facebook.com/iLikeHuaHin) so please check this before departing for the beach.

By Roger Norwood Since the days of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and possibly before that too, Thailand has been on an almost obseesive pursuit to try and attract wealthy tourists to Thailand.

Just this week the Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) issued a press release stating that they wanted to attract more ‘quality’ tourists, part of their five day action plan workshop, as Thailand strives to reach a 2 trillion baht tourist revenue target by 2015.

Of course ‘quality’ really means a higher spend per head, but a lot of resident expats believe that this is a misguided strategy, and ignores a vast pool of tourists that Thailand used to attract in droves - budget

conscious people and particularly backpackers. As one expat recently said to me, ‘The backpackers who have a great time here when they are young, will return when they are wealthy, or with their own families’.

The strategy also has another major flaw - wealthy tourists expect a much higher standard from staff at hotels, as well as being put off by dirty beaches, litter, safety, packs of soi dogs and a number of other aspects that other tourist destinations are superior to Thailand in.

This goes beyond the realm of the TAT and is firmly the territory of the politicians and educators, who either feel that they cannot, or will not address these fundamentals of society that effect everyone. Many foreigners will put up with the

negatives they discover in Thailand, as they are outweighed by the many positives, but wealthier tourists will generally not, and have an abundance of other places to choose from to spend their money.

Ironically, the advent of the ASEAN economic area in the next few years may well address some of the issues, as workers from the Phillipines, Vietnam, Malaysia and others could descend on Thailand, raising standards of hotel and other workers, and possibly influencing how Thais see things.

However Thailand does not have a good record of acting on the advice of outsiders, and this is also why their tourism strategy will persist regardless. Will they live to regret it?

Saskatchewan, Canada Diner leaves $10,000 tip after stopping off for burger and fries A generous diner must have really enjoyed his meal after he left a $10,000 (£6,260) tip following his burger and fries.

Bob Erb stopped off for a bite to eat at the Old West Express diner in the province of Saskatchewan in Canada when he got talking to owner Clifford Luther.

The pair chatted for hours, with the restaurateur revealing his daughter living in British Columbia had just been diagnosed with cancer.

Lotter winner Erb, who was on his way to bury his father’s ashes, returned to the diner five days later when he wrote out the generous cheque.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

singing for your supper It is rare that I bother to watch the Eurovision Song Contest. The voting is predictable, Abba are so old that there is now a museum in their memory, and there hasn’t been a decent UK entry since Sandie Shaw hobbled around in her bare feet. But purely in the interests of research, and nothing to do with the fact that there was little else worth watching and my local hostelry is boarded up, I sat through much of this year’s contest.

It was certainly as predictable as expected.

Poor Bonnie Tyler did her best for the UK with a song which was decidedly more Eurovision than Bonnie.

The Swedish presenter did a few costume changes, culminating with a huge dress resembling something a Disney Fairy Queen would wear to a ball, and there were some very strange pieces of choreography.

It made me recall how fortunate expats used to be in the days when most of us had to make do with cable TV. In the early ‘noughties’ we were happy enough with cable provision, despite its’ tendency to switch farang news channels on a whim, or for the person in charge of the late movie to forget to put on the second disc. If there was anything important to watch, such as football, golf, football, formula one, football, or Wimbledon, certain bars in town were well equipped for satellite viewing.

Expats would gather together to enjoy the event, and the Singha would flow. Happily never for Eurovision.

Perhaps the huge growth of expat home ownership in Hua Hin has led to the upsurge in satellite TV. After all, it really doesn’t make much sense to install it in what could well be a temporary rented property. Or perhaps expats simply tired of cable with its’ glitches and never ending repeats.

But the change must surely also contribute to the increase in expats who stay at home, rather than make the trip into town for a special sporting event as used to happen. Instead people can have a few friends and neighbours round and fire up the barbeque.

Talking of which, a surprising number of Brits in the UK

really do have Eurovision parties at home. It’s a close call deciding which is more sad - expats who stay home in Hua Hin, or Brits who have Eurovision parties. But not that close!

Staying with a similar theme, TV quiz and talent shows these days tend to follow pretty much the same format wherever you live. They even spawn movies, such as ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, and some of them, like the X Factor, attract an eclectic mix of judges.

The idea ostensibly is to provide a balance. The ideal panel of judges should contain celebrities who know a bit about what they are judging, while appealing to all age groups of viewers. There should also be one bad guy who marks harshly, and sits next to a bright young thing with cleavage whose job is to feel sorry for the next Susan Boyle wannabe to get voted out.

The latest of these shows is ‘The Voice’, which has dragged Tom Jones out of semi retirement. He is actually wearing quite well, and unlike Engelbert Humperdink, who clearly paid a visit to a hair colourist before failing so miserably at last years’ Eurovision Song Contest, Sir Tom seems happy to be seen in all his grey glory, albeit with a pretty good year round tan. There does however seem to be a price to pay for this resurgence in his popularity, in the form of an illegitimate son.

The son - Jonathan Berkery, who prefers to be known as Jon Jones, is reported as saying that he fell into a life of crime because he was abandoned by his father. He became a gun toting drug dealer who slept rough, but now wants to pursue a career as a singer, and fantasises about appearing on The Voice. For a young man who clearly couldn’t make enough from dealing drugs to provide himself with somewhere to live, and whose sense of abandonment is the result of an alleged 3 day affair between his mother and Sir Tom, the future really doesn’t seem too bright. Maybe someone should tell him that being called Jones isn’t any guarantee of success.
