hua hin, THAILAND Following on from last week’s front page about the efforts of private individuals doing good things in the community, we stay in the same vein this week as we bring you an update on a local charity run and supported by local expats and Thais who are making a real difference to the underprivileged children in the area.

The Bright Dawn Foundation has been operating as a registered Thai charity for just over three years now, with a mission to provide healthcare and educational support to poor Thai children attending primary schools in the area surrounding Hua Hin. In that time they have raised and spent millions of baht, mainly on the core activities of healthcare/ wellbeing and educational support programs.

Their most recent newsletter confirms the strides they have been making with 427 children now under their watchful care, and this year expanding their health check ups to include full eye tests for the children and teachers.

Drinking water and toilet facilities have also been improved, and fun activities and days out organised. One of their key aims is to assist the children take and pass their high school entrance exams, and 31 out of 33 succeeded this year, opening a vital door of opportunity for them.

Taking it to the technical jargon level you have the less welcomed terminology of ‘transsexual’. It should be understood that ladyboys can range from essentially gay men dressing in drag to post-op transsexuals who have gone through hormone treatment, sexual reassignment surgery – the unkindest cut of all for a man which he better be pretty damn sure of before going under the knife – usually followed by vaginoplasty to create a visually and functionally ‘real’ female vagina externally and internally.

new zealand Teacher censured after being caught stealing pupils’ lunches We’ve heard of pupils giving their teacher an apple before class but one educator appears to have misunderstood the age-old tradition. A tutor at a New Zealand childcare centre may be forced to do some detention after she was caught stealing food from her pupils’ lunchboxes.

The woman was captured on CCTV helping herself to the packed lunches when children had complained of their food going missing, a Teachers Council complaints assessment committee heard.

She was censured on a charge of serious misconduct after she was seen either putting the food straight in her mouth or in a plastic bag to eat later. The woman admitted the charge and had conditions placed on her practising certificate for five years.

‘She emphasised that she was trying to put this incident behind her, that there would be no repetition, and that she was hoping to move on with her career,’ the committee said.

At the hearing, another teacher had his registration cancelled after threatening to kill his Year 11 students ‘down a dark alley’.

Ibrahim Yücel, from Kütahya in the west 0f the country, is attempting to kick his 26-year addiction after his father died of lung cancer.

The 42-year-old, who has been hooked since the age of 16, built the cage himself using 130ft of copper wire.

The peculiar contraption allows him to breathe, eat crackers and drink through a straw, but has too fine a mesh for Mr Yücel to lift a cigarette to his lips. He locks the cage and gives the keys to his wife and daughter each time he leaves the house.

Mr Yücel has not smoked in the two days he’s been wearing the helmet – a first for someone who has gone through two packets a day since he was a teenager. He has tried to give up several times in the past without success. He said the wire cage was inspired by the safety helmets worn by motorcyclists.

After the initial shock, his family is now supporting his endeavour.

Many years ago I came a close second in the Miss Brazil 1949 competition. Later that year I emigrated and was beset by a long period of bad luck.

I suffered years of drug and alcohol abuse and a series of eating disorders. I lost a leg and needed facial reconstruction surgery after a road traffic accident.

Later, I suffered 90% burns in an unprovoked acid attack. Several of my teeth were knocked out and an eye gouged in a bitch fight outside a Chicken Cottage.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

summer days, cultural nights?

Summer finally arrived in Hull during the second week of Wimbledon. On the Friday of the second week of Wimbledon to be precise.

It was marked by the arrival of the fan in my office.

Fortunately my colleague, whose desk is directly opposite mine, is all too familiar with my feelings about the fan, and thoughtfully positioned it to blast her full in the face. Even checking carefully to make sure there was no back draft to stray in my direction. This fan phobia is almost certainly the result of having spent a few years in Thailand’s climate. Not that fans are a problem there of course. They are necessary for much of the year, but are used sensibly. Usually a ceiling fan or a free standing floor fan at a constant gentle speed, is enough to prevent a build up of too much hot air. But in the UK people who have never needed to become acclimatised to year round heat tend to over react when the mercury reaches a comfortable 25 degrees, and, rather than leave a fan oscillating gently in an unobtrusive corner, they go straight for the full in your face instant icy blast.

Meanwhile a few fortunate souls with nothing better to do on the day in question spread themselves out in the city centre to slowly toast. At a time of day when any self respecting expat would be contemplating a two hour full English breakfast, with the Nation and Bangkok Post, and perhaps a beer or three to tide them over until lunch, sun starved Brits armed with bottles of water and iPlayers laid claim to the nearest vacant patch of grass.

To be fair, and contrary to popular belief, Hull does have a very nice green space in the city centre. Complete with a large fountain, lakes and ducks, it is the pride and joy of the Parks Department.

Perhaps the elders of Hua Hin, with its’ beach on one side and views of hills on the other, didn’t feel the need for a public green space in the centre of town. Maybe land is too valuable to be wasted by not building on it.

Or perhaps our tendency to have designated park areas in UK city centres dates back to Victorian times, when

factory workers needed somewhere pleasant to stroll in their ‘Sunday best’ on their one day off a week. Whatever the reason, Hua Hin’s authorities do a fine job with flowers and greenery wherever they can. My favourite time there is December, and the central reservations are filled with poinsettias and marigolds.

But back to reality - and sun drenched Hull, which has somehow managed to reach the 4 cities shortlisted for the title ‘UK City of Culture 2017.’ This was greeted with a mixed response, veering markedly towards the ‘What..... (expletive deleted)’ end of the spectrum, with a fair number of ‘I’ll believe it when I see its’ in centre field.

Quite what the honour involves is a mystery to most.

True, we have a couple of theatres, a fair number of museums, and a marina. Not forgetting of course those lakes and ducks. But quite where the culture comes in has left all but the city elders guessing. Still, they seem determined to win the title, so the general consensus seems to be to let them get on with it. The full impact of this quest dawned on me as I was strolling into the ‘old town’ area for my weekly fix of cultural real ale. A car pulled up, and the occupants, clearly not locals, asked where they could find the restaurant area. In Hua Hin this is not a difficult question to answer. In Hull it is akin to getting through to the final round of ‘Who Wants To Be a Millionaire’. At 8 pm on a weekday night in the city centre it was an impossibility. Further along, another stranger to the city asked if they were heading in the right direction for Marks and Spencer, and while they were, any hopes of finding the store open at such an ungodly hour were quickly dashed.

I must also dash any hopes of our editor - or our readers - for any learned or astute comments on the outcome of this years’ Wimbledon! While it is certainly popular, and requires a level of stamina, skill and dedication which most of us mere mortals will never achieve, it is always a relief to me when ‘normal service is resumed.’
