hua hin, THAILAND With only twelve days before the start of the 12th annual Hua Hin/Cha Am Golf Festival we thought we should give our readers a few details of this year’s event. Two more courses are added to the list this year with nine participating, namely Royal Hua Hin, Palm Hills, Imperial Lake View, Springfield Royal, Majestic Creek, The Eagle Milford, Sea Pines, Sawang Resort and the Kaeng Krachan Country Club. Dropping out this year are the Banyan, although they are offering their own summer promotion during August and September. The major change this year though is the price - for several years it has been held at 800 baht, but this year has seen it rise to 999 baht, a big increase of 25%; given that only a few years ago this was the regular price on many of these courses it is not the great deal it once was, although still a welcome saving. When compared to a lot of other golfing destinations in the kingdom though, Hua Hin is still offering golfers top quality courses within easy travelling distance at reasonable prices, although the continuing strength of the baht does not do the retired expat golfers any favours. Last year’s event also featured special competition events, but at press time full details were not available for this year’s festival, only that each participating course will hold one Golf Festival competition during the two months. Anyone who is interested in taking part in these should either contact the individual courses, the golf societies or the Tourism Authority of Thailand - the latter can be found on our Money and Information section on page 18.

been with another girl who was so obviously a ladyboy I might have been fooled outright”. Instead he assumed – correctly – that she was probably a katoey also. Back at his place with drinks in hand the cute one flirted, teased and made-out with him, while the other girl kept herself busy. After a time he saw them out and then passed out in drunken slumber. It actually took an hour or two after he woke up before he realized that certain items of jewelry and value had been pilfered from his pad. He had little recourse as he had found them on the street, blamed himself and the drinking and decided to just move on. Now this is not the norm when it comes to katoeys per se, but should be watched out for. Note
that picking them up off the street is the first thing to be avoided as it is a more likely scenario at that point. Whereas choosing such a girl from a bar for an evening of her company is safer since you know the bar or business that she is associated and the girls are less likely to try this sort of thing. Modern culture tells us to explore our sexuality - this might be generally normal or it could be a walk on the wild side as a switch-hitter, the point is always to pursue any such ends as safely as possible. california, usa Florida man passes out in Californian motel and wakes up speaking only Swedish Smörgåsbord, ombudsman, Ikea, Volvo – we all have a little Swedish in our vocabulary, even if we didn’t know it. However, for Florida man Michael Boatwright, the Norse language became his native tongue after he woke up in a Californian motel with a huge dose of amnesia and a whole new vernacular. The 61-year-old was found unconscious in his room at Motel 6 in Palm Springs but when he regained his senses in hospital, he had no clue where or who he was, referring to himself only as Johan Ek and doing so in fluent Swedish. Doctors were initially baffled by the army veteran’s state but after a period of observation, diagnosed him with transient global amnesia (TGA). The rare condition is said to trigger complete short-term memory loss, hence why Mr Boatwright was unable to explain what he was doing in California. It is believed he was in the area to watch a tennis tournament in Coachella Valley, although his TGA meant the man himself couldn’t confirm this. Other possible symptoms of the disorder, most common in those aged 56 to 75, are sudden and unplanned travel and adopting a new identity.
Mr Boatwright remains at a complete loss though, not even recognising his own name or photos he was carrying which show him with friends and family. He is also convinced he cannot understand a word of English. He told the Desert Sun newspaper, through an interpreter: ‘Sometimes it makes me really sad and sometimes it just makes me furious about the whole situation and the fact that I don’t know anybody, I don’t recognise anybody. ‘There are isolated incidents that pop up in my memory now and then. I was talking with the interpreter about ice fishing, which is common in the north of Sweden, and thought it must something from my childhood. Things will pop up now and again but it seems to be related to Sweden. I believe that I remembered those things because they come from a time in my life when I was secure and safe and the psychiatrist agreed with that theory.’ Mr Boatwright is said to have long ties with the Scandinavian country, having visited it in the 1980s and reportedly moved there in 2003. He remains in the Desert Regional Medical Center where doctors are desperately trying to help him piece his life back together. He was first admitted in February.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Middle of the road Something unadventurous or inoffensive; opting to go neither one way or the other. This phrase conjures up similar images to that of ‘sitting on the fence’, i.e. portraying something that is not sure enough of itself to go one way or the other. It seems a rather odd choice of words to describe something that is bland and safe - surely the middle of the road is the last place to expect safety. The figurative use of the phrase began in America towards the end of the 19th century. It was used to describe the policies of political parties who attempted to avoid alienating any particular set of voters by saying very little of substance which might annoy them (nothing changes). The term was especially aimed at The Populist Party (or People’s) Party. There are early references in print to ‘middle of the road’ which aren’t specifically political in nature but they are considerably outnumbered by those which are; for example, this piece from the November 1891 issue of the Californian magazine Overland Monthly:
“He wanted the people with him. He kept in the middle of the road, and he kept his party there; and he walked in the light and in safety.” Middle of the road is now often used these days to describe bland and undemanding popular music. This is also of US origin and is known there since the 1950s; for example, this piece from the Ohio paper The Lima News, December 1956: “He [Randy Wood - head of Dot Records] put out some records of local musicians—not country music or downright jazz but what he called “middle of the road music.” By the 1970s this term was well-enough established to spawn its own, if slightly inaccurate, acronym - MOR.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
summer days, cultural nights? Back in the days when there were still a few backpacker friendly guesthouses in Hua Hin, when Soi Selakem still hadn’t been developed, and when the nearest branch of Boots was in Bangkok, many expats either knew, or knew of, each other. Even if they didn’t go into town much they tended to sit outside their local ‘Mom and Pop’ shop passing the time of day - or night - over a few Chang. Discussing the alarming state of exchange rates, the next Visa run, and other subjects which are always dear to the expat heart. We are really not going too far back either. Only about 10 years or so ago. But the pace of change was already beginning to show. The little Mom and Pop shops were rapidly making way for 7 Elevens and Family Marts. The first Tesco Express arrived on Petkasem Road, and there were rumours that the pier area - together with the small seafront shanty town of tiny fan only rooms, would soon disappear. Rumours in Hua Hin do have a nasty habit of coming true. Some sooner rather than later, while others, like the future of the Shopping Mall and Hua Hin Bazaar, drag on interminably. Much of this change, or in some cases the lack of it, is of course in the hands of the Tessabahn. Where many expats become involved is in the bar and restaurant scene, which can change at a speed which would make even the most diligent Tessabahn planning officers’ head spin. The result is that while the bigger plan for Hua Hin plods along in what we know as ‘Thai time’, many smaller changes go unrecorded, and are all too quickly forgotten. In 2007 one expat bar owner, Chris, who is sadly no longer with us, began to try to piece together the bar history of what is now a relatively small area of town, roughly bounded by Naresdamri, Chomsin, Phetkasem and Damnoernkasem Roads. Even then it was a daunting task, and one which wasn’t completed despite the best efforts of a few stalwarts
who still had a few functioning memory cells. Since then of course other expat bar areas have continued to develop, most notably Soi 80, although expat bar activity has also spread into sois west of the railway line. Realistically the task of documenting change can never be completed. By it’s very nature it is ongoing. But for the sake of those expats, both present and future, who will continue to talk about ‘the old days’ over their Chang, it is worth trying once more to fill in some of the gaps left by Hua Hins’ expat bars, and more importantly by the characters who once ran them. So to start the ball rolling let’s have your memories of those favourite watering holes. Where they were, who ran them, and when. There is also a dedicated thread on the AWOL Forum (www. awolonline.net/forum), titled ‘To Hull And Back - The Hua Hin Bar Area Project’ where you can contribute and hopefully help create what will eventually become a definitive historical guide map to the old Hua Hin. Any information from any time in the past or even present will assist in this, and any old photos or even maps would be invaluable, along of course with the stories, humorous or otherwise of the venues and their owners and patrons over the years. AWOL maintains a map on their website showing where the paper is distributed every week, and while this may be a starting point, a new map is going to be created for this project, based on information already known, and what we glean from readers. Updates on the project will appear both in this column and on the thread on the AWOL Forum.
