you’ve (Not) got mail what is wrong with hua hin post office? hua hin, THAILAND For most people living in Hua Hin, a reliable postal service is a necessity, regardless of their nationality, although expats will often feel the need more keenly than our Thai hosts. It is a regular topic of conversation among the community, and we imagine a frequent remark made to organisations such as True Visions, TOT or credit card companies is that ‘the bill hasn’t arrived’. Stories of special occasion gifts and cards not arriving (or arriving months later) at their destination in Hua Hin are frequent and have been continuous over many years now. It is hard for residents here to know the reason(s) for this, nor whether it is isolated to only certain parts of the area, but anecdotal evidence suggests that it is commonplace. We want to find out how you, our readers, are or have been affected by the postal service in the area, so we have set up a new survey to find out! Just go to www.awolonline.net/surveys and you will find the AWOL Mail Survey - it is fairly short and should only take about ten minutes to complete at most. The survey will run for just over a month, to the end of August, and we hope to bring the results to you in September, depending on getting enough responses to garner worthwhile statistics. Even if you have never had a problem with your mail, please fill in the survey as this will give a balanced result, and will help to show if there really is a big problem. We are also asking those who live elsewhere who have had experience of the postal service here to give their opinion. No doubt any problems that are highlighted by the survey will be linked to both the funding and the staffing of the Post Office, but the outcome may be that the problems are isolated and not general. Please encourage your friends and neighbours to take part in the survey so that we can get a clearer picture, and if necessary, make the Post Office aware of it.

stories a sobering story By Roger Norwood For tourists and expats who originate in the West, Thailand can be quite a culture shock in both good and bad ways. For those who are regular drinkers, or who venture into opening a business which serves alcohol, there can often be quite a nasty shock in store as the Thai authorities struggle with an almost puritanical desire in some quarters to eradicate the demon drink, and some other aspects of Thai nightlife, while at the same time keeping tourists happy. Various laws are in place that attempt to control when, where and who can consume alcohol, whether it is the ban on retail sales between certain hours that is strictly observed by outlets like Tesco and 7-11 (but

less so by local corner shops), the election laws prohibiting sales in the day prior to, and the day of an election, or the more recently added (or enforced) restrictions on important Buddhist occasions. Most countries have some form of licensing hours, however the trend in the West has been to relax these to avoid the binge drinking culture, and the police manpower problems caused by ‘chucking out’ time. Thailand was also fairly relaxed about the enforcement of any laws until around 2001, and prior to that only a few days a year were off limits, and most people seemed happy with that. However the tide turned, as politicians battled to find populist policies to get them elected, and

the clampdown on alcohol began; it is not uncommon now for there to be at least one day a month when alcohol cannot be served, and while that is not draconian, the major complaint for anyone running a business that serves alcohol is that the enforcement is not consistently applied. It is common in Hua Hin for certain establishments to be allowed to ride roughshod over the law, and the suspicion is that they are either making illicit payments or are owned by powerful people. It is a sad fact of life that corruption exists everywhere, but it is never more blatant than in this kind of situation, and begs the question as to how serious the authorities really are about tackling it or the perceived drink problem?

hawaii, usa Fisherman rescued after giant tuna he caught capsizes his boat A fisherman has been rescued after a giant 200lb (105kg) tuna he reeled him caused his boat to capsize. When Anthony Wichman hauled the massive tuna from the ocean, his boat tipped over under the weight of the yellowfin – or ahi – tuna. The 54-year-old was thrown into the sea and his leg then became caught in the fishing line which dragged him underwater. He eventually managed to free himself and clambered onto the hull of his partially-capsized his 14-foot boat to call his wife on his mobile. The US Coast Guard sent a helicopter to rescue Mr Wichman, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries. He was fishing about 10 miles south west of Port Allen on the island of Kauai when he hooked the fish. Meanwhile, his friends arrived on a second boat and were able to right his vessel before towing it back to port with the tuna still attached to the line. Lieutenant Jessica Mickelson, of the US Coast Guard, said: ‘At the end of the day, we couldn’t have asked for a better rescue. Mr Wichman was delivered safely to shore with minimal injuries and he and his friends will have quite the indisputable fish tale to tell.’

leicestershire, uk Girl, 3, speaks for first time thanks to cream cheese diet A three-year-old girl was able to speak her first words thanks to a diet of cream cheese. Fields Taylor was left mute by a rare disease known as Glut 1 Deficiency that caused a lack of glucose to flow to her brain. The condition had meant she was unable to speak but a new diet that consists of around four packets of cream cheese per week has led to her breaking her silence. ‘The first time I heard Fields say “Mum” it was just wonderful,’ said her mother Stevie. ‘I didn’t really believe that something so simple as changing her diet could make such a big difference. The amount of Philadelphia she goes through is a bit mad but the effects it’s had is amazing.’ The 34-year-old stressed her daughter’s diet wasn’t unhealthy because she wasn’t allowed to eat sweets and cakes, or drink fizzy drinks. ‘It (cream cheese) doesn’t affect her weight either as she uses up every bit of fat she eats; she doesn’t store any of it,’ Taylor added. There is currently no cure for Glut 1 Deficiency but children can benefit from a high fat diet, which makes the brain use the energy gained instead of glucose.

SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Keep the ball rolling Maintain a level of activity in and enthusiasm for a project. The American expression ‘keep the ball rolling’ was preceded by the similar, now archaic, British phrase ‘keep the ball up’. They had much the same meaning, the earlier one alludes to keeping a ball in the air, i.e. conveying the notion of keeping an activity going. This was used figuratively by the radical social philosopher Jeremy Bentham, in a letter to George Wilson in 1781, referring to his efforts to keep a conversation going: “I put a word in now and then to keep the ball up.” Bentham may be long dead but continues to be radical. He didn’t opt for the traditional coffin, buried six feet under, but willed that his body be stuffed, mounted and put on display. It is exhibited in a cabinet at University College, London (although the severed head has now been removed). The ‘keep the ball rolling’ version of the phrase owes its origin and popularity to the US presidential election of July 1840. That election is widely regarded

as introducing all the paraphernalia of present-day elections, i.e. campaign songs, advertising slogans and publicity stunts of all kinds. The unpopular incumbent President Martin Van Buren was pitted against Whig candidates, General William Harrison, a war hero who had fought against the Shawnee Indians at Tippecanoe, and John Tyler. The Whig candidates revelled in a folksy ‘cider-drinking, log-cabin, men of the people’ image and adopted the first known political slogan - ‘Tippecanoe and Tyler, too’. A song of the same name was considered to have sung Harrison into the presidency: Don’t you hear from every quarter, quarter, quarter, Good news and true, That swift the ball is rolling on For Tippecanoe and Tyler Too. Harrison’s campaign literature referred to Victory Balls. These weren’t, as we might expect, dance parties that celebrated his famous victory, but ten-foot diameter globes made of tin and leather, which were pushed from one campaign rally to the next. His supporters were invited to attend rallies and push the ball on to the next town, chanting ‘keep the ball rolling’.

lost in the supermarket Two guys, one old, one young, are pushing their carts around Makro when they collide. The old guy says to the young guy, ‘Sorry about that. I’m looking for my wife, and I guess I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.’ The young guy says, ‘That’s OK, it’s a coincidence. I’m looking for my wife, too...I can’t find her and I’m getting a little desperate’ The old guy says, ‘Well, maybe we can help each other find them.. What does she look like?’ The young guy says, ‘Well, she is 27 yrs old, tall, with red hair, blue eyes, is buxom wearing no bra, long legs, and is wearing short shorts. What does your wife look like?’ To which the old guy says, ‘Doesn’t matter, --- let’s look for yours.’ yorkshire headstone A Yorkshireman’s wife dies and he decides on an economically worded headstone for her grave. He visits his local monumental mason and requests the wording to read “She Was Thine”. A few days later he gets a call from the stonemason to say the stone is ready, and would he like to see it. On inspection, he is disappointed to read the inscription “She Was Thin”. “Tha silly bugger” he says to the mason “you’ve missed an ‘e’ “. The stonemason apologises profusely and says he will put it right within the hour. The Yorkshireman returns once again to view the headstone and reads “E She Was Thin”.

warpath The wife’s back on the warpath again, she was up for making a full on sex home movie last night and all I did was suggest we should hold auditions for her part. farmer’s wife Carol, a blonde city girl, marries a Cornish dairy farmer. One morning, on his way out to check on the cows, farmer John says to Carol, ‘The insemination man is coming over to impregnate one of our cows today. I drove a nail into the rail above the cow’s stall in the barn. You show him where the cow is when he gets here, OK?’ So then the farmer leaves for the fields. After a while, the insemination man arrives and knocks on the front door. Carol takes him down to the barn. They walk along the row of cows and when she sees the nail, she tells him ‘This is the one...right here.’ Terribly impressed by what he seemed to think just might be another ditzy blonde, the man asks, ‘Tell me lady, how did you know this is the cow to be bred?’ ‘That’s simple; by the nail over its stall’, Carol explains very confidently. Then the man asks, ‘What’s the nail for?’ She turns and starts to walk away and with complete confidence, says over her shoulder ...... ‘I assume it’s to hang your trousers on.’ 13

old bones Having just decided to include a little piece about a recent trip to the National Railway Museum in York, I opened my Emails only to find a horrific picture of a Bangkok to ChiangMai train derailed and lying on its’ side. We all know that rail accidents in Thailand are all too frequent. Usually they involve accidents at railway crossings, of which Hua Hin has suffered more than it’s fair share in recent years. Often those accidents occur on unmanned crossings where visibility of the track from the road is poor, and where there are no barriers or warning lights to signal the approach of a train. Derailments are thankfully much less frequent, but when they do occur can be even more catastrophic. The issue of the safety of railway crossings in Thailand is supposedly being addressed, and rightly so. But for a country where the rail transport system is so extensive, and forms such an integral and cheap part of the mass transport system, do we expect too much from it? Even in the UK, where the crossings and barriers are continually upgraded, there are still accidents. There are still car drivers and pedestrians who will try to beat the barriers. There are still crossings in many rural areas with inadequate controls. There are still children who will play beside the tracks, and sadly wherever there are trains there will be people who deliberately leap out in front of them. I live beside the main railway line out of Hull, and often have to cross the line at a point where only last year new barriers and warning lights were installed, and where I have since seen young adults deliberately dance around on the track after the barriers have lowered. So it is clear that no amount of investment in rail infrastructure can totally prevent accidents on crossings. Some investment in ongoing track maintenance could however - hopefully - help to reduce the number of derailments in Thailand. Those of us who use the trains there are all too familiar with those bone shaking stretches of track, and the seemingly endless crawls out of Bangkok at a snails’ pace. Not to mention the occasional alarming metallic bangs and groans from somewhere beneath the trains which we would rather not know about in great detail. But as with any industry, safety comes at a cost. And when that industry is nationalised, like the SRT, that cost must be born by the Government. The alternative - a significant increase in fares - would only force more people to use even less safe buses, or to pack themselves ever more tightly into the back of pickup trucks. So back to York. On July 3rd 1938 an A4 class steam engine named the Mallard set a world speed record of 125.88 miles per hour (202.58 Km per hour.) The Mallard broke down

from the effort, and needed a few repairs, but 75 years on that steam engine speed record still stands. To mark the 75th anniversary the famous model making company Hornby sponsored a gathering of the six remaining A4 class steam engines, including the Mallard, and thousands of visitors descended on Yorks’ National Railway Museum to pay homage. The logistics involved in gathering the six locomotives together in one place must have been mind boggling. Two were shipped over from the States, and one from South Africa, but even more impressive was the sight of them all together in one place. Those engines are seriously big! But while York basked in two weeks of even more serious tourist attention than it usually attracts, a right Royal battle over Richard III continued. Or rather a battle over his remains, which you may recall were unearthed from beneath a car park in Leicester last September. It seems that the Dean of Leicester is keen for Richard III to be re-interred in Leicester Cathedral. On the face of it not an unreasonable request, since the late King had already spent more than 500 centuries in that city through no fault of his own. Enter lawyers acting on behalf of the Plantagenet Alliance, an organisation which boasts some of King Richards’ descendants amongst its’ members. They want him re-interred in York Minster. Lawyers, as we all know, can move exceedingly slowly at times, and these lawyers seem to be no exception. Although to be fair they do appear to be prioritising the needs of their living clients over those of a long dead King, saying that his case isn’t at the top of their pile. A difficult viewpoint to argue, but one which is causing the Dean of Leicester a few sleepless nights. The Dean maintains that the delay is disrespectful. Which begs the question of the level of respect shown to a once great monarch by leaving him underneath a car park in the first place. So now poor old Richard III languishes at the bottom of someones In Tray, while the clock ticks, because according to the terms of the licence which allowed his remains to be exhumed, he must by law be re-interred by August 31st 2014. You really couldn’t make it up could you? And you certainly couldn’t imagine such a legal wrangle happening in Thailand.

Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 Were it officially sanctioned, judged by an impartial panel, and taking place somewhere other than your kitchen late at night, you’d pretty much shatter all existing hot dog eating records. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 You said you’d never forget all the little people who helped you along the way, but since becoming rich and famous you haven’t thought about those midgets once. Aries Mar 21 – Apr 20 Turns out it’s not your relationship with your father that’s been eating you up inside, but rather a threefoot long parasite lodged directly below your kidney.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 It takes a real man to admit when he’s made a mistake. However, now that you’re a woman, you can blame the sex-change operation on someone else. Gemini May 22 – June 21 Due to its high incidence of hijinx, tomfoolery, and puns, you’ll finally decide to stop answering doors during knock-knock jokes. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 The stars, in their infinite wisdom, indicate that the cute blonde you’ve been pointing them out to couldn’t be more bored if she tried. off his trolley

United offered trolley-dash through QPR dressing room in exchange for Rooney

london, england QPR MANAGER Harry Redknapp has offered Manchester United a three-minute trolleydash to take as many players as they want for Wayne Rooney. Redknapp also signalled there could be further inducements on the deal including a gas-fired barbecue, tickets to see Diversity on tour, and a loyalty card so that every nine players bought gives a tenth player free. Redknapp, who asked reporters to call him Crazy Harry and the club his Wacky World of Soccer Savings, said: “Clint Hill, Adel Taarabt, Yun Suk-Young, if you can get them in the trolley you’re taking them with you. And it’s a big trolley. “We’ve got defenders, we’ve got attackers, we’ve got those blokes in the middle who honestly I can’t remember what they do,

Above: The trolley in question, probably more valuable than the players that could fill it

we’ve got foreign lads from every country you’ve heard of and a few you haven’t. “Come on David, fill your trolley and fill your boots.” Wayne Rooney responded to the offer by letting his big, soulful blue eyes slowly fill with tears before blinking and asking the cameraman if he got that or if he should go again. The striker said: “If only people knew how sensitive I am. I mean, I’ve got a Stereophonics tattoo and I only sleep with prostitutes if Colleen’s not around or not up for it. “By implying I am a mortal man David Moyes has insulted me, and I am angry and confused and confused and angry and hungry and aroused.”
