hua hin - water is everywhere!
hua hin, THAILAND You may think our headline this week refers to the amount of rainfall the area has been experiencing in recent weeks, and that is certsinly newsworthy as this week the authorities closed the Pala-U Waterfall due to safety concerns of approaching water runoff. However our main story concerns the announcement of another water attraction to be opened, in 2014, following on from the two floating markets (with a third also scheduled), the Black Mountain Water Park, the recently opened Venezia and the impending addition to the Santorini Park development near Cha Am. The new Vana Nava Water Jungle has been announced via a YouTube video and an advertising ‘mural’ on the surrounding wall of the site, which is south of the town next to the Tesco Lotus Express after the flyover. The video (http://youtu.be/xyT5o69GXsQ) shows a variety of pools and water slides, as well as either hotel or condominium accommodation. The Vana Nava channel also hints at who is behind the project, stating that it is ‘A Proud Real Estate Development’, suggesting the involvement of the Liptapanlop family, who have already built the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, and are partners in the Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall project scheduled to open in 2015. These interests are controlled by Proud Group Holding under the guidance of Proudputh Liptapanlop, the 24 year old daughter of Suwat Liptapanlop, the veteran politician, and granddaughter of Jaraspim Liptapanlop, chairwoman of Prayoonwitt Group, the construction company which has been operating for over fifty years. The group also includes Jaras Aviation, which offers private jet services. The number of water themed attractions flooding in is only breached by the investment pouring into the area, and yet another sign that Hua Hin is set to become one of Thailand’s premier, albeit wet, destinations.

stories don’t be lazy! By Roger Norwood I have noticed over my years in Thailand that many expats tend to be particularly zealous when criticising our Thai hosts, while others will go to the other extreme, often with the (in my eyes) lazy comment ‘if you don’t like it, go back to your own country’. I don’t believe it is healthy for anyone to be seen to be beyond criticism, and valuable insights have been, and can be gained by hearing another’s perspective; equally though, any criticism made should be constructive rather than negative. It is often said that Thais do not respond well to a foreigner telling them how things should be done, but I think this is true in most

countries, and how a person reacts to information is largely dependent on how that information is given. A classic example of the Expat versus Thai situation can be found by reading the expat forums such as Thai Visa. The oil leak that is currently devastating the Rayong area is a tragedy on every level environmental, social, economic, political - and yet Thais reading the comments made on the forums would think that nothing like this ever happens anywhere else, only in Thailand. The vitriol pouring forth from several posters is quite astonishing, and brings to mind the old saying ‘People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones’. Accidents, incompetence and plain bad luck happen everywhere, and
even in countries that have all the checks and balances to prevent the corruption that so many expats appear to think is the cause. No one and nowhere is perfect, and if it were I’m not sure we’d want to live there. It is acceptable to complain or point out problems, as long as you are doing so in the right way, and this is the mistake many expats make I have lost count of the number of times I have heard someone say ‘Thais are lazy’ which is plainly not true for the entire country, and is ironic because the statement itself is a lazy generalisation. Every single one of us can be lazy, stupid, [insert criticism here] but I am sure there are many Thais working very hard right now to clean up Rayong - good luck to them.

london, uk The £250,000 ‘test tube’ beefburger arrives in London The world’s most expensive beefburger is about to be served up in London next week – and it’s not even made with real meat. The £250,000 ‘test tube’ burger has been grown in the lab using the stem cells of a slaughtered cow. It will be made up of 3,000 strips of artificial beef, each the size of a grain of rice. Prof Mark Post, a medical physiologist at Maastricht University in Holland has spent two years developing the ‘in vitro’ burger which he believes could help save the environment and prevent a food crisis. It has been suggested that stem cells taken from one animal could be used to make a million times more meat than is possible from a single cow. Scientists believe the public demonstration which is taking place at an exclusive West End venue could possibly lead to artificial meat being sold in supermarkets within five to ten years, the Independent on Sunday reported. Speaking about the project last year, Prof Post said: ‘Eventually, my vision is that you have a limited herd
of donor animals which you keep in stock in the world. You basically kill animals and take all the stem cells from them, so you would still need animals for this technology’, ‘Right now, we are using 70 per cent of all our agricultural capacity to grow meat through livestock. You are going to need alternatives. If we don’t do anything, meat will become a luxury food and will become very expensive. ‘Livestock also contributes a lot to greenhouse gas emissions, more so than our entire transport system.’ The £250,000 needed to develop the burger was donated by an anonymous donor – who may reveal himself at next week’s taste-testing for a select few. The Food Standards Agency said that before going on sale, artificial meat would need regulatory approval. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said that cultured meat would be ethically acceptable if it meant less slaughtering.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Third time lucky The belief that the third time something is attempted is more likely to succeed than the previous two attempts. It is also used as a good luck charm - spoken just before trying something for the third time. The first time we come across what appears to be a precursor to this phrase is in Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Letters addressed to R. H. Horne, 1839: ‘The luck of the third adventure’ is proverbial. It is listed explicitly in Alexander Hislop’s The proverbs of Scotland, 1862: “The third time’s lucky.” The ‘proverbial’ description from the mid 19th century suggest it dates from earlier, although how much earlier we can’t really tell. Why is the third time lucky? Again, we don’t know. There are a few suggestions. The most common is that it alludes to the belief that, under English law, anyone who survived three attempts at hanging would be set free. This is probably from the story of John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee. Lee was a West Country sailor who was convicted of the murder of Emma Keyse at Babbacombe Bay in
1885. He was sentenced to hang at Exeter prison and three attempts to execute him all failed. The Home Secretary of the time, Sir William Harcourt, commuted the sentence to life imprisonment and Lee was later freed. He was known thereafter as ‘the man they couldn’t hang’ and went on to live a long life, dying sometime in the 1940s. Fascinating story though it is, the use of ‘third time lucky’ predates it and thus it can’t be the origin. Nor is any earlier reference to the supposed English law on freeing those who survived three hanging attempts. This legal ruling never existed in any general sense and is restricted to isolated cases like Lee’s. Another suggestion is that it refers to the Christian Trinity, but there seems little to support that idea. It seems more likely that it is just a folk belief that, having had setbacks, we ought to persevere and not give up. This is enshrined in the phrase ‘try, try and try again’. Three seems to be the right number of times to try. Two isn’t enough but four is too many. Think of every time you’ve seen a drama in which a character tries to unlock a door with an set of unfamiliar keys. The first key fails, the second key fails - it is always the third that works.

A HUGE SUCCESS!
SUKHUMVIT TWENTY TWO 46 V 72 KHAO TAKIAP/HUA HIN A pool team consisting of 30 players and numerous spectators from 7 Hua Hin and Khao Takiap Bars, travelled to Queens Park Plaza Sukhmvit Soi 22, Bangkok last Saturday to play the first ever inter city challenge match and won! The match was scheduled to consist of 30 matches each in 5 locations but was cut short due to a torrential rain storm at the time of the planned cue off which caused a long delay. The end time was capped at 10pm by the match referees and the winning team was Hua Hin with a huge margin of 72 to 46. The host bars, Moonshine, Sport 20/2, Hideaway and Butterfly from Soi 22 and Christina’s Café from Soi 20 were extremely welcoming and supplied fantastic company and food to make it a memorable night. It began and ended with free shots of fire water supplied by Neil at Sport 20/2 Bar and the Trophy Presentation
was followed by huge parties taking place all around Bangkok!

The Hua Hin/Khao Takiap team was predominantly taken from the Stowford Press Wednesday Fun Pool League with Sunset Boulevard, TK’s and Beach Hut from Khao Takiap and Bobby’s Bar, Jaew Bar, Hey Hua Hin from Soi 102 and Maria’s Bar from Soi 88. There will be a return fixture in Hua Hin in October but it will be a huge task to live up to the expectations set by the hosts this time. Everybody that went made at least 6 new friends! When God Created Yorkshire God was missing for six days. Eventually, Michael, the archangel, found him, resting on the seventh day. He inquired, “Where have you been?” God smiled deeply and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, “Look, Michael. Look what I’ve made.” Archangel Michael looked puzzled, and said, “What is it?” “It’s a planet,” replied God, and I’ve put life on it. I’m going to call it Earth and it’s going to be a place to test Balance.” “Balance?” inquired Michael, “I’m still confused.” God explained, pointing to different parts of Earth. “For example, northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth, while southern Europe is going to be poor. Over here I’ve placed a continent of white people, and over there is a continent of black people. Balance in all things.” God continued pointing to different countries. “This one will be extremely hot, while this one will be very cold and covered in ice.” The Archangel , impressed by God’s work, then pointed to a land area and said, “What’s that one?” “That’s Yorkshire , the most glorious place on earth. There are beautiful mountains, rivers and streams, lakes, forests, hills, and plains. The people from Yorkshire are going to be handsome, modest, intelligent, and humorous, and they are going to travel the world. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking, high achieving, carriers of peace, and producers of good things” Michael gasped in wonder and admiration, but then asked, “But what about balance, God? You said there would be balance.” God smiled, “Right next to Yorkshire is Lancashire .. Wait till you see the idiots I put there!”

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
black and white Political correctness. Those two words strike terror in our hearts don’t they? One of the advantages of being an expat is that the level of ‘PC’ terror is significantly reduced. In fact in Thailand it has yet to register at all. And yet people there still manage to get by and co-exist quite amicably. On that never to be forgotten morning of Boxing Day 2004 for example, when the Asian Tsunami hit Thailands’ shores, my Thai neighbour alerted me to the breaking news on CNN by excitedly exclaiming that there was ‘good surfing’ down in Phuket. Another time in Pattaya a Thai friend, returning from her investigation into an incident in the next soi involving an expat who had fallen from a high rise apartment, calmly announced ‘He no Superman’. These kinds of reactions would usually be greeted with abject horror and disgust in the UK, (although we would privately waste no time in circulating the sick jokes,) but in Thailand we acknowledge those matter of fact comments as the norm. We probably all have similar examples, and we have all accepted them as the Thai way. So it was with some surprise that I read a report in a small Provincial UK newspaper on the recent horrific accident in the small town of Lac Megantic, Quebec, in which a runaway freight train carrying crude oil derailed, engulfing many of the towns’ buildings in a fireball. The article reported the rail hauliers’ president as saying ‘We’ve had a very good safety record for 10 years’, before adding ‘Well, I think we’ve blown it here.’ And I had always thought that we only saw that level of reporting in certain parts of the Thai media! Meanwhile ‘political correctness’ continues on it’s relentless path in the UK, where a black African cafe owner has caused controversy by putting a sign outside her cafe advising people not to enter if they have anything against black people - but if it’s good food they want they are welcome. This quite clever - and probably tongue in cheek marketing strategy has outraged the ‘PC’ brigade, who have been quick to declare that the cafe owners’ message implies that all white people are racist bigots. I just dread to think what the future holds for Black Pudding and white chocolate. Political Correctness of course goes hand in hand with Equal Opportunities, which, along with Health and Safety, must surely vie for the title of the most ridiculed aspect of modern Western society. And yet we have become so programmed in the UK that we daren’t speak out against the increasing constraints which these three powers place upon us. One effect of Equal Opportunities has been to open up
job opportunities to both sexes. This is nothing new, and in many ways was welcomed. Women are now accepted into what were once considered to be traditionally ‘male’ jobs, and many have shown that they can do those jobs equally as well as their male colleagues. We have plenty of female bus drivers, plumbers, engineers and architects who prove that if a woman wants to do any particular job, and can achieve the necessary skills, she is almost guaranteed to succeed. Meanwhile men have fared less well in the equal opportunities stakes. Even before equal opportunities legislation existed men were accepted as hairdressers, nurses, dress designers, cooks, retail and domestic staff. Legislation hasn’t really opened up new career opportunities for them. Or has it? There is one area at least in the UK where men can now work in previously female dominated jobs. Those of female toilet attendants. And as broadminded as I am, I simply cannot come to terms with encountering male staff in what was once the exclusively female domain of the public toilet. It isn’t so much the bodily functions that are the problem. Us women have always had the luxury of cubicles and the privacy which they afford. No - it is the way in which male toilet attendants have a habit of charging straight into the cubicle to clean it before the cistern has even had the chance to refill. The feeling that we will be immediately identified as the culprit if so much as a speck of residue or a sliver of paper has been left where it shouldn’t have been. That while we are rummaging in our bags for a quick fix of makeup the attendant is searching for any evidence of our physical presence in the cubicle. Even worse - that the sorry state of our makeup bag will be revealed in all it’s messy glory for the world of men to see. The really puzzling aspect is why, in this world of equal opportunities, there is a need for male attendants in female toilets at all. Given that there are usually an equal number of male and female public toilets, each with an equal number of attendants, is it too much to ask that the male staff are assigned to the Gents and the female staff to the Ladies?

Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 It seems the danger is over for now, but something tells you that you haven’t seen the last of that dastardly villain. Aries Mar 21 – Apr 20 Due to repeated instances of nudity, and loud, often offensive outbursts of profanity, you’ll soon be labeled as NSFW.
Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 Your scout leader will soon teach you the square knot, the clove hitch, the lark’s head, and the bowline, leaving each and every one of your limbs securely tied to their respective bedposts. Gemini May 22 – June 21 All that sugar will finally kill you this week when it falls from the top shelf and cracks the back of your head straight open. the bald truth stressed out Rooney banks on murray hair swap deal
manchester, england
The stress brought on by doubts over his status at Manchester United has forced Wayne Rooney to enter the hair transfer market after his implants started to fall out. The Manchester United footballer has made an audacious bid to buy Andy Murray’s hair. Murray had originally offered his hair on a 3 month roll over loan deal, but has been persuaded by his mother to “cash in now”: “I am surprised he has held on to it for so long. It needs constant mowing and cutting back”. The tennis player’s mother has also negotiated a sell on clause earning him 25% of any transfer fee should Rooney sell the hair on. Murray has never really been in control of his tumbleweed mane and feels it is now time to part with his unruly locks: “It can get very windy at Grand Slams. My hair often breaks down on crucial points”
Left: REVEALED - Rooney seen at Wimbledon not to watch the tennis but to conclude negotiations over the hair deal, apparently brokered by SNP leader Alex Salmond, who will also get a cut
The Scot will be taking Rooney’s surviving follicles in part exchange, with all the hair on Rooney’s back thrown in as an ‘add on’. But top sports psychologist Jeckyll Hyde has warned of the “Frankenstein Effect” of hair transplant swop deals: “Rooney, with Murray’s hair, will need to be “mentally strong” enough to play his Game Boy console for several hours a day and “come for tea” when his mum calls him. And the newly bald and hairy backed Murray must ensure that he doesn’t get caught shagging grannies during Wimbledon fortnight”.
