hua hin, THAILAND Another regular annual fixture is once more looming over Hua Hin as on 28th August the Kings Cup Elephant Polo tournament rumbles into town for the twelfth staging of the event since it began in 2001.

The compettion runs for five days, culminating on Sunday 1st September, with the matches and events taking place at the Suriyothai Army Base approximately 20 minutes from the home of the organisers Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa , where many related social functions are also being held.

Aside from the actual sport, there is a serious side to the event, which is to raise money and awareness for the elephants of Thailand; To date the event has raised almost US$600,000 for projects that better the lives of Thailand’s elephant population, including housing for the mahouts and families, shelters for the elephants and a mobile blood centrifuge and elephant ambulance for the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre. Since 2009 donations have also gone to funding the world’s first ever elephant therapy programme to research the rehabilitation benefits for autistic children.

Some of the events aside from the matches are a spectacular opening parade, celebrity matches, Chang Noi Day (Children’s Day) with a baby elephant camp and fun fair, and this year for the first time, Ladies Day with prizes for the best dressed. A Moulin Rouge themed Auction Gala Dinner tops off fundraising efforts with all the proceeds donated to various projects for the betterment of Thailand’s elephants.

By Roger Norwood The fire that raged in a couple of Soi Binthabaht bars on Saturday was fortunately doused before it was able to spread further, with reports suggesting that a combination of the efforts of workers at the hotel opposite and the fire department managed to avoid what could have been an absolutely calamitous event, with many wooden buildings in the area.

Rumours though did catch fire, and at one point the story had the whole of the street ablaze, leading to some people to start postulating the future of the nightlife area again.

Over the years there has been any number of tales told about what is plannedfor the ‘Binthablock’, driven by a combination of a perceived

official displeasure, supposedly shown by the regular crackdowns on opening hours, and the rapidly escalating rents on properties there.

A more likely scenario seems to be that at some point the commercial value of the area will outstrip the ability of the bars to afford to be located there, and individual land owners there will receive offers too good to refuse.

Some have rather naughtily suggested that the recent fire may not have been an accident - while this is of course a possibility, as with any fire at a commercial premises, it is down to police and fire experts at the insurance company to determine, along with whether the buildings can be refurbished or require demolition.

It will be a shame for many should the latter have to happen, but as we have seen, and will increasingly see in Hua Hin, there is very little sentiment when it comes to business, money and ‘progress’.

Hua Hin is changing, and fast, but this writer still believes it will be quite a long time yet before the bars will disappear from the town centre, although maybe a reduction in numbers will occur naturally. The problem could be though that in time the town centre loses it’s vibrance if the bars are replaced by designer outlets, hotels, opticians and tailors shops, and if that happenned someone might be tempted to set the area ablaze!

sweden Testicle-eating fish on the loose in Sweden prompts warning to keep trunks on Swedish men have been warned to keep their swimming trunks on after a South American fish known for attacking testicles was found in the sea.

A fisherman in the Oresund Sound between Denmark and Sweden last week retrieved a 8 inch (21cm) pacu – a relative of the piranha that is most commonly found in the Amazon region. The freshwater fish, which can grow up to 35 in (90cm) and weigh up to 55 lb (25kg) has been nicknamed the ‘ball cutter’ for its attacks on the male genitalia.

Found in most rivers in the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America, they have also been spotted in Papua New Guinea, where it is believed they have been introduced to boost fish stocks.

The latest discovery prompted the National History Museum in Denmark to warn: ‘Keep your swimwear on if you’re bathing in the Sound these days – maybe there are more out there!’ The specimen is the first one to have been caught at sea in Europe, the museum added.

‘The pacu is not normally dangerous to people but it has quite a serious bite, there have been incidents in other

countries, such as Papua New Guinea where some men have had their testicles bitten off,’ Henrik Carl, a fish expert at the Danish museum, said. ‘They bite because they’re hungry, and testicles sit nicely in their mouth,’ he told English language news website The Local. ‘And its mouth is not so big, so of course it normally eats nuts, fruit, and small fish, but human testicles are just a natural target. It’s not normal to get your testicles bitten off, of course, but it can happen, especially now in Sweden.’

The pacu was similar in appearance to its notorious cousin, the piranha, he said. ‘They are almost identical to the piranha, you couldn’t even tell from the outside. It’s just that they have different teeth. Flatter and stronger, perfect for crushing,’ he added.

Mr Carl said that the discovery of one pacu – which is currently undergoing DNA tests to confirm its identity – should not keep Swedish men out of the water. But if more were found in the area, it could become a serious issue, he suggested. ‘This one was the first, but who knows, it’s probably not the last,’ he added.

In areas where pacus proliferate, fishermen have reportedly bled to death after losing their testicles to the fish’s crushing jaws.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

the elephant in the room White elephants.

These albino pachyderms gave rise to a saying we all use today, when we say ‘it’s a white elephant’, meaning that an items’ value far outweighs it’s usefulness. One definition is ‘ a burdensome possession, creating more trouble than it is worth.’

The origin of these definitions is to be found in Thailand and some other Asian countries, where in ancient times white elephants were regarded as holy, and objects of merit. They were so revered that they were never put to work, and had to be fed special, expensive, foods.

Just as all swans in England are traditionally the property of our Queen, so are all white elephants in Thailand the property of the Monarch. The difference of course is that swans can pretty much fend for themselves and aren’t objects of worship.

Elephants on the other hand require quite a lot of care and attention, and these days the Royal white elephants are certainly very well cared for. They no longer live in Bangkoks’ palaces, where once they were believed to bring good luck. That tradition was broken by His Majesty King Bhumibol, who was so concerned about the detrimental effects of city life on the elephants that he had them moved to their own rural home.

There Thailands’ white elephants are well fed, and bathed twice a day by what is probably a small army of mahouts, generally living out their long lives in stress free idle luxury. Pretty much like most expats aspire to, and certainly much better than some less fortunate grey elephants could ever imagine.

But a few centuries ago Royalty had a different solution to the problem of what to do with all those expensive, yet sacred, white elephants. Any King who was unhappy with a subordinate could present his erring subject with the ultimate gift. A quite literal white elephant. A gift which had to be fed and cared for as befitted its’ status. A gift which needed suitable land, with access for people who wanted to worship the animal, as no

doubt many did.

The huge cost of providing sanctuary, tons of expensive food, round the clock mahouts and an open house was pretty much guaranteed to bankrupt the recipient of the gift.

Job done.

A similar tactic was once used in England, but being a bit short of elephants Tudor kings adopted the strategy of gracing their more wealthy subjects with their presence.

It was such an honour for the landed gentry to have their manor houses chosen as Royal weekend holiday destinations, that no expense was spared in getting everything just right. And such was the advance planning of Royal visits that there was plenty of time to add the odd wing or two, a couple of stable blocks and maybe a ballroom. Minstrels and a gallery were obligatory of course, as were extra staff, new furnishings and silverware fit for a King.

Many a wealthy Lord or Baron overstretched their budget in an effort to curry favour, only to find themselves left with a White Elephant in the form of a stately home which they could no longer afford.
