plane crashes on beach
hua hin, THAILAND A small plane crash landed on the beach about 600 metres from Hua Hin airport on Wednesday morning in what appears to have been a technical problem. There was heavy damage to the plane (pictured below) which was an Austrian-built Diamond DA40 Diamond Star, a four-seat, single engine, light aircraft often used by flying schools. It is not known if the plane was being used to instruct a pilot on this occasion.

Two men were aboard the plane when it crashed, but thankfully neither were reported to have suffered any injuries. A witness said the aircraft appeared to malfunction shortly after takeoff. The fuel tank was emptied in the immediate aftermath of the crash by staff from the airport, to avoid any possibility of a fire or an explosion. There is an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

An example of this was presented to me this week and got me wondering why it is that people will do or say things here that they would never dream of repeating in their home countries. The trigger for rhis week’s article was a question I was asked by an English visitor, as he enquired whether he and his family needed to wear crash helmets as they rode their scooters into town. What struck me was that had we been in the UK the question would not arise - everybody knows both the physical and legal risk of not wearing a crash helmet, and while it

is perhaps understandable to enjoy the thrill of the wind in your face and a cooler head it will almost certainly land you in trouble. So what is it about Thailand that leads people to ignore what they would normally do back home? There are countless examples of people buying property or businesses without carrying out due diligence or even employing a lawyer, and sometimes even without seeing the property! Is it a psychological thing where they feel a sense of freedom and choice that they don’t have at home? Is it the carefully nurtured image that Thailand is a friendly, smiling place where nothing should worry you? Or the ‘holiday syndrome’ where people do just throw their cares
away and try to forget about rules and common sense? Given that this doesn’t just seem to effect tourists but also expats the last one is unlikely, and we are all guilty of it in smaller or larger doses, and maybe it is not just Thailand but anywhere we go away from our own country. Maybe it is the feeling that no one knows us and we can escape the identity we have at home - certainly there are plenty of expats who have reinvented themselves, some to the point of creating a completely fabricated past - how many of you have met others claiming to have been former members of the SAS for example? With all the counterfeit goods that are notoriously available here, it seems like some of us are also fakes.

new york, usa Man steals $210,000 from parking meters – all in loose change A man has been jailed for stealing more than $210,000 (6.3 million baht) from parking machines across New York - entirely in loose change. James Bagarozzo, who is a parking meter repair man, worked in Buffalo for more than 30 years and serviced its 1,200 meters. The 58-yearold rigged dozens of machines so deposited quarters never dropped into the coin canister – allowing him to steal the money for himself. FBI investigators found around $47,000 (1.4m baht) in cash and quarters in Bagarozzo’s home, including $40,000 (1.2m baht) hidden in his bedroom ceiling. Over an eight-year period, the parking meter perp used bags in his car or his deep-pocket work trousers to take the money home. He would then roll the change in coin wrappers and exchange them for bank notes. The FBI said the bank never questioned him because he said he had a friend in the vending machine business. Special agent Rob Gross of the FBI Buffalo division, who investigated the case, said: ‘When he went to work, half of his day was spent stealing from the city. He developed such a good relationship with the bank
tellers that they eventually gave him boxes to use that held exactly $500-worth of quarters. He went to the bank several times a week with a $500 box of quarters and got cash in return.’ Bagarozzo has been jailed for two-and-a-half years and former colleague Lawrence Charles, who stole $15,000 (450,000 baht) in quarters, has been arrested. Bagarozzo said he started stealing the coins when he became ill and was concerned about how he would financially provide for his wife and two teenage daughters. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
packing it in Our British readers will be familiar with the saying ‘carrying coals to Newcastle.’ A reference to the futility of doing something - as in transporting coal to a place where it is (or in this case once was) found in abundance. The idea of smuggling rice into Thailand would appear at first glance to fit into the same category as Geordie coal, the only difference being that the land of smiles still has quite a lot of rice of its’ own. Nevertheless the smuggling seems to be happening on a grand scale, with Cambodian and Burmese rice illegally entering the Kingdom at an alarming rate. The reason is pure Thai logic with a pinch of economics thrown in for good measure. In its’ laudable efforts to support the prices paid to farmers for their crops, the Government has succeeded in making Thai rice more valuable than that of its’ neighbours. Meanwhile Thailand has lost its’ position as the Worlds’ largest exporter of rice, and is now in 3rd place after India and Vietnam. At the same time it is sitting on a stockpile of 18 million tones of rice - double the amount it would normally export in one year. Unfortunately Cambodia and Burma, (or Myanmar as we should now call it), while cashing in on Thailands’ artificially inflated prices, are only adding what is allegedly lower quality grain to that stockpile. The concept of stockpiling to increase export prices and redress the balance would be fine for a country holding a high quality product for which there is a high demand. But unless I’m missing something here there are a couple of stumbling blocks. Namely World export ranking, and quality. According to the Managing Director of one leading Thai rice processing company, Cambodian and Burmese rice is indistinguishable from that grown in Thailand. I’m sure we can all sympathise with the dilemma of telling one grain from another, and yet the authorities estimate that the equivalent of 750,000 tons of milled rice is being smuggled in every year. It does sound as though Thailands’ border force has a very similar problem to that of the UKs’, where the number of illegal immigrants is anyones’ guess. But surely rice deteriorates at a much faster rate than an illegal immigrant? There is a tendency in the UK for Provincial newspapers to devote a few column inches to the goings on in their local Magistrates Court every week, and Hull’s local rag is no exception. But unlike some Thai local newspapers there are never any graphic scenes of carnage, and no photos of the arresting officers pointing accusingly at the perpetrator with his stash of stolen or smuggled goods. Which last week was a shame, because it would have
been quite interesting to see the damage caused to a birthday cake valued at £15 (about 700 Baht) which landed its’ assailant in court. Sadly Hull currently tops the league tables as the UK city with the highest crime rate outside of London. Exactly how much of that crime involves food isn’t disclosed, although a good percentage of it must be attributable to the theft of food from supermarkets - a sad sign of the times. Damage to a birthday cake though is probably a first for the Magistrates in this crime ridden city, and I have to wonder how they would react if they saw the fate of the average 700 Baht birthday cake from S & P. The Thai custom of dabbing cream from the top of birthday cakes onto the faces of birthday girls and boys is meant as a gesture of good luck. The origin of the custom remains a mystery to me, and readers suggestions are welcome. But the practice does at least help to reduce the amount of sickly topping left to be eaten, and thankfully doesn’t attract unwelcome attention from the local constabulary, who have far better things to do. Still on the subject of food, how do you like the idea of a flat peach? If that conjures up visions of the fruit version of roadkill I must hasten to assure you that flat peaches aren’t completely flat. They are about 4 or 5 centimetres deep. I encountered them for the first time this week in a well known supermarket. While standing in the queue at the checkout and peering at the contents of other customers trolleys - as you do - it became apparent that the customers at either side of me both had packs of flat peaches. Imagine something resembling a pack of Jaffa Cakes (or Oreos depending on your nationality) but with a clear wrapper displaying half a dozen peaches huddled together in all their fresh fuzzy flat glory. You get the idea. But......why? The checkout lady had no idea either, but said they were selling very well. As were the flat cabbages. There are times when the urge to proceed immediately to an airport without passing go becomes very difficult to resist.
