hua hin, THAILAND With just 16 months to go until the scheduled start of the ASEAN Economic Community, a study by the Centre for International Trade Studies at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce has warned that Thailand’s tourism sector is in danger of falling behind it’s neighbours in key service areas. The study shows that ASEAN countries, especially Malaysia and Singapore, have seriously improved their tourism and hospitality services to draw more visitors. “Thailand needs to develop tourism services and improve hospitality so that the tourism industry can help increase the country’s income during the slowdown in exports and domestic growth,” Aat Pisanwanich, director of the Centre, said this week.

Foreign visitors are less satisfied than they once were with the “Siamese Smile”, as many Thais, particularly people working in service businesses, look displeased, according to the study. The service industry should urgently improve its services and the attitude of its employees or the country could see fewer visitors in the future, the study found. Language skills were also highlighted as being a problem, and the study said that the public and private sectors need to encourage their employees to improve English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and ASEAN languages.

Hua Hin is poised to be a significant beneficiary from tourism over the coming years, but the warnings in the study should be heeded here too, and Thais working in the tourism sector may find their jobs under threat from workers coming here from other ASEAN nations unless they do so.

The strong baht has also taken it’s toll on tourism with Thailand no longer regarded as a cheap destination by Europeans and Americans.

By Roger Norwood Some readers might think that this column suggests that both myself and other contributors don’t like Thailand or the Thai people, because of the criticisms that regularly appear here of both. I would like to state that this is not the case, and that life in Thailand is as close to perfect as anyone is likely to find anywhere in the world.

I have mentioned before the brickbat that is frequently thrown by foreigners at other foreigners who dare to criticise the land they have made their home, and occasionally Thais will also utter the ‘why don’t you leave?’ response with slightly more justification, but both fail to realise that it is because we love Thailand, and love living here, that

we would like to improve things, not just for ourselves but for everyone.

It is an odd comparison, but when British people hear some general criticism of the UK or it’s people, more often than not they will nod their heads sagely in agreement, acknowledging that things could and should be improved, regardless of whether the speaker is British or foreign. In fact the Brits have a track record of mocking their own country and some of the peculiar foibles and character traits of the people, as well as many of it’s most famous people.

While Thais do make fun of themselves, there is a certain reserve about it, and largely the rich and famous tend to be revered and left alone, whereas they are prime

targets as far as the British go.This could in part be due to the concept of karma for the Thais, or the more basic idea of politeness, and it strikes me that this could be one of the fundamental reasons why so many foreigners love Thailand and the Thai people, and also why it is so shocking when they do not display the gentleness and forgiving we are so used to.

The differences in Thailand are what makes it unique, and we should all remember that however frustrating life here can be sometimes, we should be careful in not trying too hard to change either attitudes or behaviours, as it might end up ruining what we love.

Diepholz, germany 6.5m baht damage to rented house after inflatable mattress explodes Spare a thought for this German man, whose house move went from bad to worse after a mattress he was trying to inflate violently blew up – landing him with a huge repair bill. The 41-year-old, who has not been named, was thrown across the room as the explosion blew out all the doors and windows of the building.

Having moved to a new town, the man bought an inflatable mattress to sleep on temporarily. After realising that the mattress was punctured, he used an industrial strength puncture repair spray and tyre sealant. Unbeknownst to him, however, the product caused a violent reaction when heated by the built-in motor pump.

The explosion chucked him across the room, blasted out windows and ripped doors from their hinges, causing €150,000 (6.5m baht) worth of damage – in a property that’s not his. The man had to be taken to hospital and was treated for minor cuts and an injured wrist.

The house, located in the town of Diepholz in Lower Saxony, only had shards of glass left in the window frames, while tiles from the roof were scattered on the floor and curtains were ripped from their poles.

Things could now get even worse for the man, after unsympathetic prosecutors said they were considering taking legal action against him.

Dafeng, china One million cockroaches on the loose after breaking out of farm Having one or two cockroaches inside your house is annoying enough but try having to contend with the million roaches which have reportedly escaped from a farm in China. The insects, which were going to be used for traditional medicine, are thought to have absconded from an institution in Dafeng. They are now reportedly nesting in cornfields that surround the farm in the city located in the eastern province of Jiangsu.

The pests are thought to have got loose after an unidentified person destroyed part of the greenhouse they were being kept in. Wang Pengsheng, who owns the farm, could now lose tens of thousands of pounds after spending half a year mastering his business plan.

Chinese authorities have not yet figured out how they’re going to deal with the large number of escaped cockroaches, but five investigators have been sent to the location to formulate a plan.

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

milking the applause Our female readers will understand why, now and than, a visit to the hairdresser is needed. And how an update on the hairdressers’ life is inevitably all part of the deal. It’s just one of the things which us women have to tolerate in order to rid ourselves of those dreaded split ends.

So when my own hairdresser was planning his wedding, his customers were regaled with regular progress reports on everything from the choice of venue, to the colour of those awful flounces they use to camouflage the sorry state of the chairs.

No-one was spared the most minute detail, from the construction of the cake (a pyramid of 80 champagne flavoured cup cakes) to the choice of matching tiepins for the main men. Brochures showing the venue - a stately home standing on it’s own picturesque island some 60 miles away from where any of the guests lived - were displayed in the salon.

In fact a fairly typical British 21st Century wedding, but worse was to come.

After such a momentous occasion it was reasonable to expect a little feedback when the next grooming session came around. Perhaps even a photograph or twelve. So it was quite disconcerting to find a digital photo frame on the shelf in front of me while the next bout of snipping and blow drying was going on.

‘It holds 800 pictures’ my hairdresser proudly declared, at which point I gave up all hope of browsing through a year old copy of the Ikea catalogue and thanked Buddha that I hadn’t booked for a more time consuming procedure.

Of course in this digital age every minute of a wedding day is recorded for posterity, from bridal preparations right through to the latest trend - trashing the wedding dress at the end - which can be achieved by spray painting the bride, or standing her in a muddy lake.

Even photos of new babies have reached another dimension. Every expectant grandparent with a smart phone now looks forward to receiving a digital image of the 20 week scan.

If it weren’t for the tradition of pink for girls and blue for boys I would have enough trouble distinguishing the sex of new born babies. Show me a picture of a cute little bundle in yellow and I simply don’t have a clue.

So to be proudly shown a black and white image of a foetus presents a whole new social dilemma. You can’t really exclaim ‘oh it looks just like its’ Dad’ or ‘what a bonny little foetus!’ while constructive comments such as ‘should that foot be in that position?’ are probably best left unsaid.

The 21st century has brought with it another ‘baby etiquette’ dilemma, with controversy raging in the UK over breast feeding - or rather what locations are acceptable for that purpose. With public opinion already divided the debate reached new heights when a mother was spotted breast feeding her infant in the shallow end of a public swimming pool, and was ordered to leave the premises. Hopefully she was allowed to get dried and dressed first, but whatever your views on the subject there does seem to be a growing need for guidelines.

Brits - and those from other western countries - are all too familiar with signs which tell us that certain activities are not allowed. Most commonly found on public transport, the range of white signs with red borders and diagonal red stripes across images of banned activities is already quite extensive. As well as the obligatory image of a smoking cigarette, signs depicting beefburgers, hot drinks, i players, ghetto blasters and dogs can also be found in abundance. Perhaps one day soon ‘no breast feeding’ will be added, although it is unlikely to be needed in Thailand where women tend to be quite discreet in public.

Which brings to mind an incident some years ago at a bar in Pattaya, where one of the girls had returned to work very soon after giving birth. She was a popular girl with the customers, and quickly became known as ‘gold top’.
