hua hin, THAILAND Our non-UK readers may be a little puzzled by this week’s story, but car boot sales are enormously popular events in the UK, and the arrival of them in Hua Hin is a welcome addition. They are similar to what Americans refer to as ‘flea markets’ but are more geared towards individuals selling unwanted household and other items, and the concept is that people will load up their vehicle with items in the hope that they can sell them at a regular designated meeting place with plenty of parking space. The largest events in the UK attract thousands of people - a small charge is paid by sellers for their parking space, while buyers enter free.

The first such event in Hua Hin has been organised for Sunday 6th October, at the Zab Wer restaurant on Soi 112. The organisers plan to hold future events on the first Sunday of every month from then on, and they hope that the local Thais and expats will attend in sufficient numbers for this to be the case. Advance booking is available now at the discounted price of 300 baht per space, although people can pay 500 baht on the day if there is remaining space available. Traders are welcome but no food or drink can be sold at the event, and non-Thais are advised that while they can attend they must not handle the actual sale of goods themselves due to Thai labour laws. Buyers are not affected by this of course. So load up your unwanted ‘booty’ and go along! (see ad p 11)

By Roger Norwood One of the most common frustrations expats endure in Thailand has to be the ‘last minute’ mentality that seems to run throughout Thai society. I have lost count of the number of times that I have learned of either an organised event, a special promotion or a (Thai) family visit or outing at the last possible moment, causing other arrangements to be hastily cancelled or supplies to be purchased in double quick time.

Forward planning seems to be a rare event here, whether it is in a commercial, official or domestic situation. A classic example of this was and is the annual Hua Hin Jazz Festival; every year whoever organises it (and there have been several different people responsible

in it’s eleven years of existence) announces the dates and lineups less than a month before the event, and there have been several occasions when it has been moved at very short notice. While it can be argued that they still attract a lot of people to the event, I believe that it could be many more, bringing a lot more money to the town.

The recent Food Festival is another example where promotional posters only appeared around the town in the week leading up to the event, and also highlighted another issue that is particular to an international tourist destination - most promotional material for events is only in Thai, with only some organisers recognising the need to tell foreign tourists about their event.

Officialdom also follows this pattern, and examples are when the local police go around the bars telling them they must close immediately, or roads are suddenly closed and dug up either without any notification to residents, or very little notice so they are unable to make provision for the disruption.

I am not suggesting that Thailand should change its ways for the benefit of foreigners, but for the benefit of Thailand, as better and more advanced planning would result in better attended and more profitable events, with the side benefit of more impressed tourists and less hassled expats!

Instead of calling Gordon Ramsey to deal with his kitchen nightmares, the owner seemingly decided to shut up shop and leave a note telling his customers exactly what he thinks of them. A picture of the letter was posted on Reddit where it has been viewed thousands of times, but it has since been taken down from the closed shop front. The owners, who plan to open up new restaurants in Lubbock and Austin, have denied putting up the sign. ‘Don’t believe all you hear and see folks!’ said a post on its Facebook page.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated.

This week it is..... The quick and the dead losing a bout can be ‘saved’ from defeat by the bell that All souls - alive or dead.

bum deal I find it increasingly difficult to keep track of the UKs’ financial status. We seem to go from triple dip recessions to signs of recovery almost overnight.

One thing though is for sure - Harold Wilsons’ old ‘pound in your pocket’ certainly doesn’t go as far as it did in his day.

By comparison Thailands’ economy remains remarkably stable. Any signs that it suffered a huge financial crisis 16 years ago are long gone, and while other countries hit by inflation tend to gradually withdraw their smallest units of currency, Thailand still has it’s satang.

The satang has been in circulation since decimalisation was introduced to the country in 1897, and has a value of 100th of one baht. Although no satang coins have been minted since 2008, it continues to be legal tender.

Not surprisingly most shops no longer entertain the coins, and they are rarely seen in circulation, but the 25 and 50 satang coins can still sometimes be found in your change.

To get an idea of just how tiny a unit of currency it is, one dollar US would buy about 3,200 satang, while one Euro is worth around 4,220 satang at the current rates of exchange.

You can be thankful not to be burdened with such huge amounts of coins, but many Thai people still rely on the satang as a measure of their income, particularly when dealing in very low value items such as the sale of recycled newspapers.

With a history already spanning 116 years, the satang could still have quite a few years to go as legal tender. Even when it is eventually withdrawn it is easy to imagine people still referring to things as ‘one satangs’ worth’. But as long as it remains that little coin serves as a reminder of the huge divides between the countrys’ richest and poorest classes.

‘Concussion not good for you’ discovery shocks scientists

usa The National Football League (NFL) has made a discovery that has sent the medical world into confusion. Since 1920, thousands of American footballers haven taken part in an elaborate experiment to repeatedly ‘ram their heads together’ in the hope of generating an alternative source of energy.

Much to everyone’s surprise the study has concluded that there was not enough kinetic force to ‘boil an egg’ but enough traumatic brain injury ‘to elect George W Bush again’.

The initial data on cognitive impairment was inconclusive, as the tactics of the average NFL match already resembled the actions of a befuddled egg-plant. ‘Obviously the easiest solution was for one of us to look up ‘concussion’ in the dictionary,’ admitted an NFL spokesman. ‘But you’ll be pleased to hear that much of the $675m of injury compensation will go to providing therapeutic activities for those in recovery; these include kickboxing, base jumping and Ferret Legging.’
