hua hin, THAILAND Our eagle-eyed readers will have spotted that this week’s issue is number 249, which means, naturally enough, that next week is our 250th issue, as well as being the completion of five years in print. This is absolutely a reason to celebrate, and we want to thank our readers and advertisers with a party next Friday evening at King Bar on Soi Binthabaht. In the grand tradition of all the Balloon Chaser entries over those five years, there will be balloons, as well as free food, live music and at various times throughout the evening free drink specials with the AWOL Shot Spinner. The party starts at 7.30pm and will carry on until late, and we hope that as many of you can come as possible for what will be a lot of fun. King Bar has been recently extensively refurbished and is one of the longer established bars in the centre of town, located at the Hilton end of Soi Binthabaht, the first on the right as you head down the street. It is a regular haunt for many of the expat community, as well as tourists and other visitors to the area. Anyone who does come to the party will have the opportunity to meet and speak with some of the people involved in producing the paper, and we would welcome any comments and feedback to help us shape the future of AWOL. By Roger Norwood The next time you or one of your Thai family or friends has a dose of the sniffles or a heavy cold, I can almost guarantee that they will end up taking or advising you to take some antibiotics. This will also often be the case when you see a doctor or pharmacist. Most expats will have encountered this, and the problem of over prescribing antibiotics is not limited to Thailand, and has become a serious issue worldwide. Why is it a problem? The bacterial diseases that antibiotics are designed to treat (so that is a no to treating viruses with them, like, for example, the common cold) have evolved and are becoming increasingly resistant to them.

In March this year, the UK’s Chief Medical Officer highlighted this problem in her annual report, saying that Britain’s health system could slip back by 200 years unless the “catastrophic threat” of antibiotic resistance is successfully tackled. There are several reasons in addition to over prescription as to why this problem has reached such proportions; one is that the pharmaceutical companies are tending to shy away from developing new antibiotics and focusing their efforts on ‘lifestyle’ drugs and other more profitable medicines; another is the increasing use of antibiotics in animal husbandry, where it is commonplace for antibiotics to be added to the food, so much of the meat and fish we buy has antibiotics
within it; then there is the increasing self medication in countries like Thailand where antibiotics are available without prescription over the counter. Of course the final outcome of all these antibiotics washing around in our bodies is that our immune systems get weaker, and we are less able than ever to cope with bacterial disease. So the next time someone offers or gives you antibiotics, unless you are seriously ill, think twice about accepting them - your immune system may take a little longer to deal with whatever you have but it will get there, and more importantly, will become stronger as a result. So, do you want the red pill or the blue pill?

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
bum deal September in Thailand is usually so devoid of tourists that it is often referred to as ‘Black September’. Any Americans and Europeans who used their summer leave to head for Thailand in the middle of the rainy season have long gone, and the big influx of Christmas holiday makers seems a long way off. The only travellers are gap year students, who head for the Full Moon parties in the south, or to Chiang Mai and other northern destinations where they can swing around in trees. (In any case they don’t count - as we all know that backpackers don’t spend anything in bars.) In the UK September can be equally dreary. The shops haven’t yet quite decided which season they are trading in. Parliament should really still be on holiday, but that is as much a smokescreen as the seasonal fog. And the only people who have too much work are the farmers. So this months’ spate of newsworthy items ‘Brit Side’ have come as a welcome diversion from the prospect of October, and the Christmas countdown which will accompany it. First on the agenda is the rather drawn out wait for what may, or may not, be the arrival of a baby panda at Edinburgh Zoo. The zoo expects to make 48 million pounds in revenue if Tian Tian, its’ giant panda, succeeds in giving birth. That is probably more than some distilleries gross in a year. But female pandas are fickle creatures with alarming hormone swings, and poor Tian Tian may be reluctant to upstage her rival for Mum of the Year Award, the Duchess of Cambridge. The Duchess (Kate to you and me) made her first official appearance following the birth of Prince George in mid September, at the Tusk Trust Awards. It is not advisable to try to pronounce that while drinking Chang. Suffice to say that the newly retired Duke of Cambridge, aka Prince William, is also having a gap year, beginning with the Tusk Trust Awards dinner where he presented the first Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa.
Any other young couple about to move into an expensive apartment with a new baby would have to think twice about the effect of such early retirement on the husbands’ RAF pension, but Kate appeared at the event in a sparkly 2,500 pound gown. (That’s about 125,000 Baht.) Admittedly she looked stunning, and the young Royals do have a long tradition to uphold. Quite how the British public will view Prince Williams’ change of direction from helicopter pilot to conservationist son of his tree hugging father though is debatable. Equally debatable is the announcement by Jeremy Clarkson that he ‘might’ stand for election as a Member of Parliament in the next General Election. As luck would have it ‘petrol head’ Clarkson has his eye on his home town of Doncaster as his possible launch pad into politics, which currently happens to have Labour leader Ed Miliband as its MP for Doncaster North. Whatever you think about Clarkson he does at least have strong opinions on almost everything, and is more famous than Miliband. The fact that he is a journalist and TV presenter is no deterrent either to a career in UK politics, in fact it can help. The MP for Great Grimsby* is Austin Mitchell, who was also a TV presenter in a previous life, while our House of Lords does contain the odd actor and author or two. The UKs’ parliamentary selection process tends to avoid replacing a Prime Minister with their sibling - but otherwise anyone can be in with a chance, and in the current political climate Clarkson must stand a better chance than most. * As a place name ‘Great Grimsby’ is rarely recognised by Hull folk, who simply use the usual title ‘Grimsby’ or more often ‘Grimesby’ - in deference to decades of friendly trawler competition between the two ports.

Continue WEST on the Pala U Road and as you pass under the by-pass zero odometer. Drive WEST and at 1.8 km take a look to your left and you’ll see a Thai restaurant set back from the road with a rustic dried reed roof, and car park in front. This is the On On On location. At 3.0 km you will come to a crossroads, – turn LEFT towards Majestic Creek Golf Course and Huay Mongkhon Temple. At 6.3 km turn right (WEST) at a cross roads (HHH sign). Take care while negotiating the diversion area where extensive road works are on-going. At 11.3 km you will see a small reservoir on your left (HHH sign). Pickups and SUV’s can turn down the track towards the reservoir and park on the high side of the gravel area, away from the water. Best parking for cars, after turning around, is on the west side of the road. From Cha-Am via By-pass: Proceed SOUTH on the bypass to the Pala U Road flyover junction and exit LEFT. Take third exit from roundabout WEST to Pala U and zero odometer as you pass under the by-pass. Continue as from Hua Hin (3) above From Hua Hin via Soi 112: If it is convenient to leave Hua Hin from the south via Soi 112, proceed to the by-pass, carefully cross straight over and drive 7.4 km to a cross roads, drive straight over (HHH sign) and continue 5 km to car park. From Pranburi: If coming from Pranburi, slow down near the 36 km marker and turn LEFT, signed for Huay Mongkhon temple and then drive 7.4 km to the cross roads, straight over (HHH sign) and a further 5 km to the car park as above. Top 32 Individuals Tuesday 17th September It was a top night of darts that finally became a battle between two of the stars of the Division 1 Champions, Paradise Corner Bar, with Jo and Art battling it out to be crowned top individual player. And it was Jo that had the staying power to win the trophy, while his team mates celebrated the Championship as well. Runners up in Division 1 were CAT Karaoke. Division 2 was won by All Nations Guesthouse and we assume that they will be plying their trade next season in Division 1. Worthy Runners up were Blue Lagoon 2. A hearty thanks to Oil and Martin for their efforts in organising the season, and to Johnny’s 56 for their hosting of the finals.

Both clubs are coming off the back of good Champions League victories, although City had a disappointing goalless draw in their last league outing. Wayne Rooney seems to have settled his differences with United and is playing as if he has a point to prove, and we feel he may be the difference in this game if he plays. A tight game though, and a narrow away win.
