five years a look back to the birth of awol
hua hin, THAILAND The very first AWOL was published on 3rd October 2008 at a time of considerable political and economic uncertainty in Thailand and globally; domestically the ousting of Thaksin Shinawatra in 2006 was still causing repercussions such that our front page was warning that the coming high season could be the worst in memory, and while we can’t claim psychic powers, just a few weeks later the ‘yellow shirts’ occupied Suvanabhumi International Airport causing huge damage to tourism that year. While things have changed since then, there is a strange symmetry between then and now, with the shadow of Thaksin still looming large over Thai politics and a continuing global recession, albeit one that seems to be slowly dissipating. The Hua Hin area though is markedly different in many ways, having gone through and still experiencing an unprecedented building boom, particularly in terms of commercial and retail projects, alongside some major infrastructure improvements. The next five years are likely to see further development, as well as tourist and residential numbers growing, especially once the ASEAN Economic Union begins in 2015. Whether the next five years will also see the often mooted plan to make Hua Hin the capital of a new province encompassing Cha Am and Pranburi come to pass we cannot say, but we can say that even without an official classification the town will be regarded by most as a city within that time frame, and AWOL plans to be around to document it. stories street life By Roger Norwood A story that has been doing the rounds on Thailand forums hit the UK national press last week, with the reporting of the ‘hundreds’ of Westerners who are living on the streets in Thailand. The reaction on the forums was predictably a mixture of scorn, as in serves them right, and sympathy, with a large amount of debate centering on how these poor unfortunates had ended up where they are. Given the numbers of homeless people there are in Western societies, and how relatively few there are in comparison here, most fingers were pointed at what was seen as the likely common cause - a failed relationship where the Thai woman walked away with most, if not all, of the money

in the form of property or cars. To be fair it has also been pointed out that addictive substances also played a part, notably alcohol, but as that is a common theme amongst many homeless people worldwide, both the reactions, and the story itself have tended to focus on the ‘money grabbing Thai woman’ in the equation. While there is a different, or should I say more obvious, attitude towards money in Thailand, I don’t believe that there is a greater number of unscrupulous women/people here than anywhere else; I do think that there is more opportunity and temptation here though, along with a greater pressure on women in particular to ‘marry well’, i.e. to someone with money.
It is rare now in the West for women to have pressure put on them by their family regarding their choice of partner, whereas many women here (particulary those from poorer backgrounds) are under constant pressure, both from family and from themselves to provide for the family. It is ingrained into Thai girls that they must take care of their parents in particular, which is not necessarily such a bad thing, but when this extends to brothers, cousins, uncles and aunts, the pressure can become unbearable. Some live with it, but increasingly many are starting to reject it, particularly when they have siblings that don’t share the burden. Until that changes, we will probably see more homeless westerners ultimately paying the price.

The 61-year-old suffers from auto-brewery syndrome, an unusual yeast infection that mimics the signs of intoxication. His wife feared he was a secret alcoholic as he would often wake up drunk and would suddenly appear sloshed at church or at work. He arrived at hospital five times over the legal driving limit complaining of dizziness before doctors eventually worked out his condition. ‘He would get drunk out of the blue,’ explained Barbara Cordell, the dean of nursing at Panola College in Texas. ‘On a Sunday morning after being at church, or really, just anytime – his wife was so dismayed about it that she even bought a breathalyse.’ An overabundance of yeast from foods such bread or pasta turned the patient’s stomach into a brewery, meaning he was unable to stay sober, the International Journal of Clinical Medicine reported.

Animal print may be one of the hottest trends in the UK at the moment, but it has left rhinos and giraffes at the park’s new ZUFARI attraction in a muddle. Bouncers have been employed to enforce the zero-tolerance ban at the park after staff noticed a number of the animals trying to communicate with visitors or running away scared. Zebra, giraffe, leopard and African wild dog prints are among a number now banned at the zoo. Chessington officials have put the confusion down to the new 22-acre ZUFARI trail being a near exact replica of the Serengeti plains, meaning print-wearing guests puzzle the animals. ‘Since the launch of ZUFARI, guests have interacted with the animals more closely than ever before and we have noticed a lot of animals becoming baffled by animal-print-wearing guests,’ explained ZUFARI spokeswoman Natalie Dilloway. like clockwork Thailand will no doubt be watching events in Zurich closely in November. In typically efficient fashion the Swiss have come up with a novel way to regulate prostitution, which involves a cross between a garage sale and a MacDonalds drive through. The first row of 9 garage like buildings has been unveiled in Zurich. Due to be fully operational in November, the 1.5 million pounds stirling out of town development will only allow customer access by car, presumably to avoid the need for installing beds in the garage units. On entering the facility customers will drive past a row of 40 ladies before making their choice and negotiating a price. The ladies (I am assuming they will all be ladies, although other options may be available) will each have to pay 3 pounds 50 stirling (about 175 baht) per night to use a unit, which compared to a MamaSans’ cut of a bar fine seems very cheap. Opening hours will be more limited than customers in Thailand are used to, with the units opening in the early evening, and closing at 5 am. While the idea of providing an out of town location which can be controlled does make some sense, especially for the safety of the ladies involved, you have to wonder whether the Swiss authorities have really thought it all through. How will the ladies (or other options) be presented? Will they be seated behind a window Thai style with numbers strategically pinned to them? Will customers pass their orders via an intercom in a drive through booth? Then there is bound to be a rush of customers in the early evenings as people call in on their way home from work, which, with only 9 units available, could cause massive tailbacks. Waiting times could be even longer if one or two customers feel the need to take their time, or aren’t in any rush to get home to their kartoffel and egg. And how
will they manage closing time? Supermarkets make announcements before they close. ‘This store will close in 10 minutes - please proceed to the checkouts.’ We all know what panic that causes, and how we invariably miss an item on our list in the stampede to get out. Perhaps the Swiss facilities will at least give enough notice of closing time to allow for a cigarette. Or at least use cuckoo clock alarms in place of strident loudspeaker voices. Whatever customers reactions to Zurichs’ first custom built short time units might be, it is easy to imagine how Bangkoks’ finest might just be tempted to try a similar scheme. Perhaps in the car park of the Grace Hotel!
