unprecedented rainfall wreaks havoc

hua hin, THAILAND The Hua Hin area is historically one of the driest regions in Thailand, and normally escapes the annual monsoon fairly lightly, but the rainfall last weekend broke the mould as fas as history goes.

In a twenty four hour period beginning on Saturday evening, it has been reported that seventy centimetres of rain fell, breaking a record set some twenty three years ago, and leaving Hua Hin residents and businesses counting the cost. The region has been saturated for months already in what has been a very unusual year as far as the weather goes, so the deluge quickly started to cause problems, which were exacerbated by the two high tides and one relatively high low tide.

South of the town centre suffered most, but any lower lying areas were affected, and the regular ‘hotspots’ for flooding such as outside Market Village, Sois 102, 94 and 88 and Soi Binthabaht were over forty centimetres deep in places. Some areas also suffered power cuts, and the army were called in to the worst affected areas.

As the rains have subsided and the water has drained away, there is ample evidence of the damage they have caused, with pot holes having appeared in many places, notably where several sois meet Phetkasem Road; drivers should take care as these are quite large on some roads. While few drainage systems in the world could cope with the volume of water dropped in such a short space of time, credit must be given to the work carried out in recent years to improve this in Hua Hin which saw the town return to normal fairly quickly, unlike some other areas of Thailand which are still suffering.

The hope is that we have now seen off the worst and can look forward to a drier and more normal weather pattern.

By Roger Norwood Many foreigners in the last thirty to forty years have departed their home countries and ended up settling in Thailand, some as retirees on decent pensions or veterans from the military, others who got fed up with their lives at home, and still more who moved here with the company they worked for.

One of the main attractions for settling here historically has been that you can live well relatively cheaply in comparison to ‘back home’, and while that is still true to some extent, the gap has narrowed considerably in the relative costs of living.

This has led to more expats looking for, or considering, finding gainful employment, and a choice to be

Both options present problems; many expats are middle aged or retirees, and so would find it hard to find decent paying jobs at home, aside from the unwanted departure from Thailand, while there is an equally limited number of jobs that expats are allowed to do in Thailand. Without question the number one choice available is teaching English, but this officially requires certain qualifications, although being a native speaker can sometimes be enough. Beyond this though you would need to be an expertly qualified (or experienced) individual to even have a hope of either getting a job or the necessary work permit.

The regulations regarding the work foreigners are allowed to do are extensive and stringently enforced, and the amount of paperwork to be completed is daunting, although schools and companies will often handle this for you.

The difficulty in getting work here helps to explain why many either become ‘part time’ expats, doing contract work outside of the country, or opt to set up a business which they hope can generate the income they would like (or need). The pitfalls of that last option could fill another ten columns but ultimately it is often the best path, as long as you have a trustworthy Thai partner.

But even the thought of The Muppet Show terrifies mother-of-two Lindsay Broom. She has suffered from a phobia of puppets – called automatonophobia – since she was five.

‘All it takes is for my husband, Alex, to hum The Muppets theme song and I’m a wreck,’ she said. ‘When I see them, I automatically imagine the puppets’ facial features twisting and distorting, I just have to get away from them.’

The 37-year-old’s phobia dates back to when she bought a rabbit hutch with her mother and was left ‘in a dark room’ inside the seller’s house with an elderly woman.

‘The elderly woman didn’t say a word, but was obviously unwell. She sat there groaning and wheezing as an episode of The Muppets was playing on the TV,’ she explained.

While there is no known cure for automatonophobia, possible treatments include hypnosis, psychoanalysis therapy and medication. But Mrs Broom said: ‘I haven’t sought medical advice – the phobia is so specialised that I can’t imagine anyone will be able to help me.’

But the Birmingham health store owner did confess she had had to wean herself onto it slowly and at first mixed it with cranberry juice.

Prince charles and the hooker Prince Charles decided to take up jogging.

Every day, he’d jog past a hooker standing on the same street corner.

He learned to brace himself as he approached her for what was almost certain to follow..

This ritual between him and the hooker became a daily occurrence.

who’s counting?

Like the UK, Thailand conducts a population census every 10 years, and has since 1910. The data gathered helps to determine the population, and also how they live. Their social and economic group, education levels, type of employment, and the kind of housing they occupy. Also like the UK census, the information is used to measure change and to plan for the future. How occupations are changing, where housing, schools, health care, public transport etc will be needed.

The UK census began in 1801, but until 1851 only very basic information was recorded. Since then the census has provided an increasing amount of data which, as well as helping to determine demographic change and population movement, has become a valuable research tool for family historians.

But the UK census has always had it’s faults. It records only people who are present in any given property on the night of the census itself, and gives no indication of movements, changes in occupation, or deaths during the intervening years. It is also a laborious and time consuming job, as anyone who has worked on gathering the information will know. Not least it is proving to be pretty unreliable, with an estimated shortfall of 1 million

people in 2001, while the 2011 census is reckoned to have detected half a million immigrants who had slipped all other record keeping nets.

So the UK census is to be scrapped, and alternative methods of keeping tabs on some 63 million people are being considered. Given the amount of data already collected by the UK Government you wouldn’t think the task would be too hard. Electoral Registers have to be completed annually by every household. The Inland Revenue, National Health Service, Department of Work and Pensions, Land Registry, schools, universities and Local Authorities all keep records, and all births, marriages and deaths have to be notified by law.

Thailand, with four other countries bordering it, and land area of more than double the UK - with much of it rural - could be forgiven for estimating its population at 65.5 million in 2010. The UK, surrounded by sea, and with twice as long to practice its’ head counts, should have got it right by now.

Who knows what the new system will be, but experience tells us that whatever it is may well be contracted out to a private company. Google may be preparing its’ bid as we speak.
