charity golf day for hutsadin foundation

hua hin, THAILAND Next Friday, 25th October, sees the first charity golf day for the Hutsadin Elephant Foundation, in its efforts to expand and improve the facilities it currently provides to care for elephants that need medical care, help and a safe environment.

The event is being organised by a number of expats and Thais who help the Foundation in whatever way they can, and is being held at the Banyan Golf Club south of the town. Teams of four will be playing rounds with a number of the holes sponsored by local businesses, and while the competition between the teams plays second fiddle to the fundraising efforts, it will be a fun day out for spectators as well. The Hutsadin Elephant Foundation is located just off the Hua Hin - Nong Plub Road (also called the Pala U Road) which leads to the bypass; they are just after the crest of the hill on the right hand side. Entrance is free, although any donations are gladly accepted, and elephant trekking is available for a fee depending on how many people and elephants are involved. Foreigners are advised that the best time to visit is when the expat volunteers are present, and the number of fantastic reviews they receive on websites like Trip Advisor backs this up. Both holidaymakers and expats should make the Foundation a key place to visit from both an enjoyment perspective and to help them with both moral and financial support. The Foundation can be found on Facebook or by calling 032 827098-100 We hope to be able to bring our readers a full report on the golf day in due course, and hope that plenty of money is raised for such a good cause.

By Roger Norwood For all the great reasons to visit and reside in Thailand, some days here present you with a host of reasons to leave, and I had one such day this week.

I say that it was one day, but in fact the day was a culmination of a whole series of issues that had been niggling away for a period of time, and they just happened to all coincide on the day in question.

I won’t bore you with the details of the issues, but I will bore you with what the fundamental aspects were of why they were so annoying and what I believe is the reasons so many expats end up whinging.

The first aspect is regarding what I call ‘getting what you pay for’ - this applies to goods, services, and things

like building and home maintenance services. Labour and most products here are still cheap by comparison to the West, and it shows, but some things are not, and when these goods or services fail, we are used to being able to get something done about it.

The second aspect is what you encounter when you try to get someone to do something about whatever has failed; this could be when you speak to the company or service directly or when you ask a Thai friend or partner to do so on your behalf. If you handle it, and your Thai is lacking, you will first have to try and get to an English speaker that both understands the problem and is actually able to tell someone else to do something. If you ask a Thai to handle things for you, they

will either tell you that it is a waste of time and just to (effectively) accept it, or their attempts will more often than not, turn out to be a waste of time!

At the heart of this is two problems; one is the unwillingness of Thais to go into a confrontation, due to the possibility of loss of face for either side; the other is that more often than not, at some point in the past, a payment was made to allow something that shouldn’t have happened to happen, and by the time you suffer because of this, it is too long ago for anything to be done about it, even if it could be proved.

There is a lot of hard graft going on in Thailand, and it is something that we should all keep in mind when faced with the ‘hard days’.

new york, usa Man ‘scared to flush’ after toilet explodes in his face We’ve all heard the sayings about explosions of a rather unpleasant substance on farms and in factories. In some cases, it can even hit fans.

But one man was landed in it after a toilet exploded in his face, with shards of porcelain knocking him unconscious.

Michel Pierre was testing the water pressure in his flat when the blast happened. He woke up covered in blood and needed more than 30 stitches to his face, arms and legs.

The 58-year-old was so traumatised by the explosion that he now uses a rope to flush the toilet from a safe distance. He is also planning to sue the company that manages his block of apartments in Brooklyn, New York.

His lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, said: ‘There is a serious problem in the building. Clearly toilets are supposed to flush, not to explode.’

Three other tenants in the building also needed treatment in hospital after similar incidents.

Pierre is said to be immensely relieved he wasn’t sitting down at the time of the blast.

eccles, uk Greggs refuses to sell Eccles cakes to the town of Eccles during an Eccles Festival The Greater Manchester town of Eccles once saw a profusion of the treats being sold and eaten, but the sugartopped treats have now been cast aside following ‘lack of demand.’ ‘We sell products for which strong demand exists and Greggs made the commercial decision to stop selling Eccles cakes in its north-west stores around a decade ago, after customer demand for the product in the region declined significantly,’ a spokesperson said.

Between October 7-13 the town of Eccles has dedicated its first ever festival to the ‘world famous cake,’ including activities such as an Eccles cake-off, cake-themed storytime, and a cake decoration workshop.

The snub by Greggs towards the currant-filled pastry left a bitter taste in the mouths of Real Lancashire Eccles Cakes. The cake manufacturers called Greggs’ decision ‘disgraceful’ and told how they were favoured countrywide. ‘As far as we’re concerned our Eccles cakes sell really well. In fact, they’re one of the top selling cakes in supermarkets,’ said Ian Edmonds, production manager.

Eccles cakes were made popular after they were first sold within James Birch’s shop in the town from 1793.

leprechaun A golfer playing in Ireland hooked his drive into the woods. Looking for his ball, he found a little Leprechaun flat on his back, a big bump on his head and the golfer’s ball beside him.

Horrified, the golfer got his water bottle from the cart and poured it over the little guy, reviving him.

“Arrgh! What happened?” the Leprechaun asked.
