hua hin, THAILAND No major news to report on in the local area this week, so we are filling this space with information on some events that have recently happened or are about to happen.

Last Friday saw the Charity Golf Day for the Hutsadin Elephant Foundation, which was favoured by glorious weather and by all accounts was a big success - we will be bringing you more on this in a later issue.

This weekend sees the remaining days of the month long Art Exhibition

by Wanwimol Kesa-Ngam (Nang) at Cicada Market in Khao Takiab, which is well worth a visit, as is the Artist Village on the Pala U Road where Nang and her husband along with a variety of other artists are based.

Also this weekend, on Sunday 3rd, is the second Hua Hin Car Boot Sale - the first one was washed out by the torrential rain but with the weather rapidly improving the organisers hope for a good turnout this time. It is being held at the Zab Wer Restaurant on Soi 112 from 9am to 1pm, and will be held on the first Sunday of every month.

Inside this issue you should find a voucher from Snoopy’s Bar on Poolsuk Road, and we think your Thai friends would be delighted to receive it as it is a special offer for them. If you don’t find one, don’t worry! There will be more in the next three issues at least, so make sure you grab your copy of AWOL on a Friday evening.

By Roger Norwood Last month’s announcement by Thailand’s Public Health Minister of a proposal to levy a charge on tourists to partly offset unpaid medical bills of foreigners has met with a storm of protest, with many feeling that such a scheme would be both difficult to operate, as well as potentially driving tourists to other destinations.

Last week World Tourism and Travel Council president and CEO, David Scowsill, waded into the debate, noting that Thailand’s tax system related to tourism failed to meet WTTC’s framework for what he called “intelligent taxation.”

It is also likely that the brunt of this will be borne by tourists who already

hold sufficient funds or insurance anyway to cover any accident that might befall them, and who would likely end up in private hospitals, not public.

I doubt that the additional proposed 500 baht fee on its own will actually sway anyone from not coming to Thailand, but as another incremental cost on top of poor exchange rates and increasing prices, along with some general bad press the Land Of Smiles has been getting in recent months and years, it could end up being the straw that breaks the camel’s back if it is introduced.

somalia Britney Spears songs used to scare off pirates in Somalia Britney Spears is being used as a secret weapon… to scare off Somali pirates. Her hits are blasted out to deter kidnap attacks, merchant navy officer Rachel Owens revealed. Spears’s chart-toppers Oops! I Did It Again and Baby One More Time have proved to be the most effective at keeping the bandits at bay.

Second Officer Owens, who works on supertankers off the east coast of Africa, said: ‘Her songs were chosen by the security team because they thought the pirates would hate them most. These guys can’t stand Western culture or music, making Britney’s hits perfect.’

SKY Sports is launching a new subscriberonly channel focused entirely on sporting event handshakes.

The launch follows Manchester City manager and lager brand Manuel Pellegrini’s refusal to shake hands with Chelsea boss José Mourinho, which experts agree was far more thrilling than the match itself.

Sky Sports Handshakes will show every handshake in the Premier League and Championship from multiple angles in slow motion with expert analysis, with the BBC broadcasting an evening highlights package.

Hastily-retrained handshake analyst Jamie Redknapp said: “Handshakes have at least as much bearing on who’ll win the league as all that 4-4-2 drivel.
