2014 hua hin jazz festival announced
hua hin, THAILAND While it may be too early to celebrate just yet, the press release this week announcing the 2014 Hua Hin Jazz Festival is a welcome sign that this time some early planning is afoot. The announcement said, “The Hua Hin Municipality has in majority voted and granted B-Concept Media Entertainment Group’s Passion4Share division to manage, promote and execute the Hua Hin Jazz Festival in Thailand. The next edition of the Jazz Festival will take place between 20-22 June 2014. The exact dates have yet to be officially confirmed by the organizer.” The release went on to outline the history of the festival, and hinted that the musical lineup would once again feature foreign jazz artists, and suggests that an overall more professional approach is being adopted - “A broader international and local jazz line-up will be presented for the next edition and confirmed closer to the festival date. Festival communication will be improved. Environmental issues will be addressed, international production standards will be implemented. Stronger partnerships will be developed that sustain The Hua Hin Jazz Festival for the future. ... the committee felt that Hua Hin Jazz Festival deserves more attention and grow the festival with more partners involved.” More information is and will be available on the official festival website www.thehuahinjazzfestival.com, and regular updates are promised. Just print one: 3D printer makes working human liver A group of US scientists have created the world’s smallest human liver which can survive for forty days and works like the real thing – using a 3D printer. The mini-livers, made by California-based medical research company Organvo, are just half a millimetre deep and four millimetres wide but can perform most of the functions that a real liver can. The printer builds up 20 layers of hepatocytes cells, which carry out liver functions, along with two major types of liver cell. It also adds cells from the lining of a blood vessel. This allows the liver cells to receive nutrients and oxygen. The most recent liver created survived for 40 days in the lab, which might not seem very long as human liver cells are replaced every 300 to 500 days, but the company’s previous mini-liver only survived for five days. Keith Murphy, Organovo’s chief executive officer said: ‘In April we were able to show that liver function was retained in our 3D liver for over five days, and we have now demonstrated that our tissues perform consistently for at least 40 days, a significant improvement over the average 48 hour performance of 2D cultures.’

Android ‘rebels’ against monotonous housework Tedious housework was seemingly too much for one cleaning robot to take, when it apparently rebelled and decided to end it all. The android was given the tiresome task of cleaning up some spilt cereal before it climbed on to a kitchen hotplate where it was destroyed, according to reports in Austria. It had reportedly grown weary of being forced to clean the same house every day and decided to become a martyr to the robot cause. ‘Somehow it seems to have reactivated itself and made its way along the work surface where it pushed a cooking pot out of the way and basically that was the end of it,’ explained fireman Helmut Kniewasser, who was called to tackle the blaze at Hinterstoder in Kirchdorf. ‘It pretty quickly started to melt underneath and then stuck to the kitchen hotplate. It then caught fire. By the time we arrived, it was just a pile of ash.’ He added: ‘The entire building had to be evacuated and there was severe smoke damage particularly in the flat where the robot had been in use. It’s a mystery how it came to be activated and ended up making its way to the hotplate. I don’t know about the allegations of a robot suicide but the homeowner is insistent that the device was switched off.’

stories speaking in tongues By Roger Norwood Before I start on this week’s topic, I feel the need to state something: Thai people are not stupid. Now with that out of the way, it has emerged recently that Thailand ranks lower than several other South East Asian countries in English skills, and for many expats this will come as no surprise. With the 2015 Asian Ecomomic Community formation looming, many are wondering whether Thai workers will be able to compete with those from Malaysia, Singapore, the Phillipines and Indonesia when it comes to jobs requiring spoken English, and even less developed nations like Cambodia and Myanmar are thought to have more and better English speakers.

One of the problems is that the teaching of English in Thailand’s government schools is often lacking, and often without a native English speaker; frequently the text books used have basic spelling or grammatical mistakes, much as you will encounter on menus and adverts here. One will meet plenty of ordinary Thais who can speak good English, but this is mostly borne out of constant exposure at work or home, or self learning, and not down to their formal education. There is also an issue of confidence, and that old farang bugbear, face, that comes into play as well, so Thais who are learning or have learnt English rarely actually speak it for fear of making a mistake and thus losing face.
Of course it is very much easier to learn another language when you are young, and it does seem that there are either not the resources or the will to make English Thailand’s second language, as it is in the aforementioned countries. Could this also be an issue of face? Certainly in October 2010 the previous government turned down a proposal by the committee on education reform to do so. The reason given by the Education Minister at the time, Chinnaworn Boonyakiat, was that people might misunderstand Thailand’s history and think that it was once a former foreign colony. The Thais are proud of never being colonised, so it would be somewhat ironic if this ultimately holds them back economically.
