2013 vintage car rally gets into gear
hua hin, THAILAND Next weekend sees the eleventh outing of the Hua Hin Vintage Car Rally, or more correctly called ‘Automobile Concourse’. Running from next Friday 29th November through to Sunday 1st December, it involves a grand parade of more than 50 hard to find classic cars, and will be the largest of its kind in Thailand’s history. Among the cars on show will be a Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn, an exclusive model built in England during 1949-1955, and was used by Queen Elizabeth II during her state visit to Thailand when she visited His Majesty King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit. Another is a 1928 Packard 626, which has not been shown anywhere else before. A 1964 Corvette Stingray used in the movie “Stingray” will also be on display. On Friday evening there will be entertainment and dinners held at the Venezia and Majestic Creek, while on the Saturday a gala charity dinner is being held at the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas. Money raised from the whole event will be donated to the Chaipattana Foundation, which is renowned for projects dedicated to improving the quality of life and selfreliance, and was initiated by His Majesty King Bhumibol. Other events forming part of the Concourse are releasing fishes and turtles at Chang Hua Man Royal Project, planting rubber trees at Khao Krapuk, the donation of 86 bicycles to four selected local schools in Prachuap Khiri Khan, and offering food in a traditional ceremony to 86 Buddhist monks.

While the idea behind bus lanes is a good one - namely allowing buses to travel freely and to their timetable and thus encouraging more people to use them rather than their own vehicles, benefiting the environment, other road users and actually making roads less congested, often the practice can be less than perfect. Most of the problem in Bangkok (or anywhere else in Thailand that it might be attempted) is a common issue for any law that needs enforcing, which is the motivation

for the police or whichever group is given the authority, to actually make sure the bus lanes are usable, and only by buses. This would mean going completely against the unwritten rule of Thai roads, which is that motorbikes don’t have to obey any of the rules. They can go the wrong way down a one way street, turn right at a left turn only junction, drive on the pavements, u-turn at no u-turn spots and so on and so forth. It would also mean an investment in a large fleet of tow trucks - it doesn’t take a genius, or even someone who has seen Bangkok drivers in Hua Hin, to realise that a host of Thai Jeremy Clarksons are going to park their Mercedes’ in the bus lane because
it is the closest place to where they are going. And how many cops or traffic wardens are going to break the Thai class system and attitudes to confront an obviously wealthy Hi-So Thai? Something clearly needs to be done about congestion, whether it is Bangkok or Hua Hin, but at the moment I don’t believe bus lanes is it. It requires something more fundamental, and things haven’t been helped by the frankly careless government tax policy encouraging Thais to buy more (new) cars. Cars were already hugely important to Thais and with no major Thai car manufacturer, what is the benefit to this country? Bus lanes?

It has long been acknowledged that rugby and football were locked in a battle to the death, with the nation only having enough emotions to invest into one ball-based activity. The Institute for Studies declared victory for football after comparing television viewing figures, amounts of shiny shirts sold and the number of players who are sort-of-celebrities in America. The English FA chairman Greg Dyke said: “This is a great day for the nation.
