hua hin, THAILAND Two events for the two wheeled fraternity take place next weekend, although with quite different participants.

First is the ninth annual Hua Hin Bike Week which takes place on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th December at a new venue from previous years, Hua Hin School, followed by the Hua Hin Cycling Classic on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December. Both events are in honour of His Majesty the King.

Hua Hin Bike Week always attracts thousands of people and hundreds of bikes of all shapes and sizes, and the rumble of big bike engines will be an increasingly familiar sound as the event approaches, with bikers already begiining to arrive.

AWOL understands that the format will be similar to previous events, with live music, food and drink stalls, bike memorobilia and accessories, competitions and most importantly, donations to charity and a show of appreciation for the local police.

The bicycle events are the Queen’s Cup Tour of Hua Hin on the 7th and the Kings Cup Hua Hin Mountain Classic on the 8th, with the latter event beginning at the Hua Hin Shooting Club in Borfai, where participants can register in one of three categories from 7am to 10:30am on the day with fees between 250 and 350 baht. The categories are A - 42km, B - 28km (both Male by age and Women Open), and C - 10km (Male 10yrs and under, Male 11-15yrs, Female 15yrs and under).

By Roger Norwood I was having a discussion with a few people the other night, including the editor of AWOL, about possible changes or new sections that could be included in the paper. One suggestion that was raised was a letters page, to which the editor responded that there had been one before, but not enough people sent in contributions to fill it every week.

He did concede, however, that this was in the relatively early days of the paper, and that it might be worth another try.

Essentially I am using my column this week to ask the readers what you think - what changes would you like to see, what bits do you like and what are you not so keen on? To give

The editor did stress however that unless there was advertising to pay for the extra pages to hold new content, then some existing content would have to make way for it. So this also begs the question - what would you cut from the paper if you had the choice?

Clearly new content will only be added if there is a belief that it is what readers (and advertisers) would like, but also if regular content is available to fill the space

every week. Long time readers will have seen some sections appear and then disappear, and apparently this is mostly due to the person who was writing the pieces not continuing, either because they chose not to, or because they had run out of things to write.

So this is your chance to suggest your ideas as to what you would like to see in this paper - of course there are no guarantees that it will come to fruition but please tell us what you think.

Francis Hooke, advising of ‘Forewarned is forearmed’ has a genuine claim to be danger from the Indians’, 1685, which contains another called such, as it dates from at least the end of the example of the early form of the proverb: 16th century, and could be much earlier. The Latin “A word to the wise is enough. The old proverb is, saying ‘praemonitus, praemunitus’ loosely translates forewarned, forearmed.” as ‘forewarned is forearmed’. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

a word to the wise How well do you cope with the Thai language? Do you know 1,000 words of Thai?

I’m not sure that my ability to count up to 9,999 in Thai would qualify, but if you sit and make a list many of you might be surprised by how many words you do know, and use regularly without thinking twice.

Of course it is easier to pick up a foreign language while living in that country and hearing it spoken on a daily basis. It is also a courtesy - especially in Thailand where people appreciate you trying to learn - and for those living in more rural areas it can be a necessity.

But we Brits are not generally known either for our languages skills or for feeling the need to learn them, so in September the ‘1,000 Words Campaign’ was launched. A spokesperson for the British Council, a major player in the campaign, said that people in the UK suffer from a reputation of being lazy linguists, and that speaking another language is crucial to understanding another culture. Many an expat may disagree with the second part of that statement, having given up trying to understand their Thai partner at all, but we surely can’t deny the first part of it - we are lazy linguists because we expect everyone else in the world to speak English.

Probably as a result of that expectation we also have a tendency to neglect the teaching of foreign languages in our schools, which hasn’t helped at all. Back in the mists of time I was taught 3 languages from the age of 11 in High School, but had to give them up after two years in order to change to an arts and science based syllabus.

But even those two years provided a small foundation on which to build. Especially Latin, which as a ‘dead’ language later fell out of favour in mainstream schools.

The sad fact is that, as many of our European and Scandinavian counterparts have shown, teaching their children English from a much younger age can produce adults who often possess better grammatical English skills than us native speakers.

Not only have many of us in the UK lost out on the chance to absorb foreign languages while our young brains were like sponges, we are now faced with inexplicable changes to our mother tongue. ‘Text speak’ abbreviations find their way into the written word, while one of the most annoying misuses of English involves one of our smallest words - ‘of’ - now commonly used instead of ‘have’, as in ‘I should of....’ It is also added superfluously to ‘off’, as in ‘I got off of....’ producing the potential for a sentence which includes the phrase ‘I should of got off of that bus.....’ Meanwhile our American cousins go the other way, often not bothering to include ‘of’, ‘to’, or ‘and’ at all, as in ‘I’ll go take a look’ or ‘he went out

the door’.

At the other end of the literary scale we are faced with overly pretentious words which sound, and sometimes do appear, to be made up. Certain authors love to use words like ‘potentiality’ and ‘certitude’, while ‘aphoristically’ recently had me searching in vain through the Oxford Concise. Government spokespeople aren’t immune to the temptation to elaborate either. Speaking after a court ruling on mandatory work programmes in the UK one said that the government would have to reconsider ‘mandation’. They certainly should.

So the next time you hear a Thai friend say ‘I take you go’ don’t be too hard on them. English isn’t an easy language to learn. In fact some of us are still trying to come to terms with it.

After England finished the first day of the first Ashes Test match with Australia on 273-8, fans were seen skulking in downtown Brisbane self-consciously celebrating in the dimly-lit bars of the infamous Sports Pub district.

England fan Wayne Hayes said: “There was a card in a phone booth offering ‘relaxing cricket boasting’ and before I knew it I was screaming ‘The finest team the world has ever SEEN’ with a bunch of men whose names I didn’t even know.

“The next morning all I could think about was what I was going to tell my wife when I got home. What if a photo of me smiling and looking confident got back to her?

“But the remaining three day’s performance has proven what I knew in my heart all along – I’m a misery man and proud of it.”
