thousands flock to royal celebrations hua hin, THAILAND At times of national unrest, the Thai people have always turned to their monarch as the true protector of them and their country. Politicians come and go, demonstrations begin and end, but His Majesty The King has been the rock of stability for as long as most Thais can remember. This week they have descended on the royal town of Hua Hin to celebrate his 86th birthday and were to be rewarded with a grand audience at Klai Kangwon Palace, their Majesties home in Hua Hin. Phetkasem Road and the Canal Road were at times elongated car parks in the days leading up to the 5th December, and on the day itself (yet to come at time of writing) the town was expected to come to a standstill. Rehearsals for the big occasion have been taking place all this week, with hundreds of soldiers in ceremonial uniforms being brought in, and other finishing touches being applied, such as resurfacing part of Phetkasem Road near the palace. Pomp and circunstance will have been in full flow on Thursday, with most of the country only able to see it on television, while the thousands that witness it in person here in Hua Hin will have stories to tell their grandchildren for years to come. stories tourist trap By Roger Norwood It struck me this week as the antigovernment protests were ongoing in Bangkok that these type of events always seem to be in the run up to Thailand’s peak tourist season. Certainly the last three such events have been, and it made me wonder if this is a deliberate or coincidental move? On discussing it with others, most seemed to be of the opinion that it was the latter, with a couple chipping in that not many Thais have much idea of planning ahead. However an event of that size must surely involve some planning? The timing of the events remains though, and raises another question - if the people behind such events do plan them and their timing, are they

At least 30 countries’ governments have already issued travel warnings, which in turn render invalid any travel insurance held, so people will naturally be more inclined to either cancel their trip or change their destination. This will of course have a knockon effect for Thailand’s tourist industry and the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Thais who are in some way connected to it. Official statistics normally try to downplay the importance of tourism to Thailand, but rarely do they include the ‘indirect’ spending by tourists, often done in the shadier end of the economy, whether that is picking up a bar girl or buying
counterfeit goods, and everything in between. There are no accounts or tax returns on these transactions, so the figures available are not a true representation of reality; Thai politicians and demonstrators will therefore believe that they are not harming their fellow countrymen very much when foreigners decide not to come and spend their money as a result of their actions. I (and many others) believe the reality is that a continuing political turmoil, and rule changes adversely affecting foreigners, such as the most recent decision on foreign couples staying on a retirement visa, or the proposed 500 baht ‘tourist tax, will eventually bring Thailand to its knees economically. I hope not but it is the path they are on.

minnesota, usa Man unsurprisingly fails to win back estranged wife by throwing $1,000 into crowd Instead of writing her a letter or giving her a phone call, a lovesick husband took the rather unusual step of throwing $1,000 (32,000 baht) worth of single dollar bills off a shopping centre balcony in an attempt to win back his estranged wife. Serge Vorobyov had hoped to impress his wife with the stunt, which was accompanied by performers singing Dean Martin’s classic Christmas song Let It Snow, but was instead reprimanded by police for disorderly conduct. The 29-year-old was also banned from the Mall of America in Minnesota for a year. A YouTube clip of the stunt shows Mr Vorobyov dropping the money from the top floor of the mall, with people at the bottom grabbing the notes as they fall. He later explained he was ‘going through a horrible divorce’ and he didn’t see how the stunt amounted to disorderly conduct. And no, his wife did not show up to the mall after being invited along.

Stunned medical staff in Beijing, China, found the flower when the 16-month-old girl’s worried parents took her to hospital. They say the girl has been suffering from an ear infection for more than four months and finally decided to see a specialist when she began scratching it regularly. Her mother saw ‘something’ inside her daughter’s ear, but told doctors she was unable to get it out. It was later surgically removed. According to the Beijing Morning Post, the flower had grown to nearly 2cm long, with the humid conditions in the ear canal encouraging its growth. ‘Even the slightest bit of pressure put her at risk for internal bleeding so it had to come out,’ explained physician Gu Qinglong.

local foundation introduces day tours
The Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) was established in 2001, and the Wildlife Rescue Centre less than an hour from Hua Hin is the focal point of their varied activities. The main objectives of the WFFT are to rescue wild animals from places where they are maltreated and/or neglected, and help them to spend the rest of their lives in a sanctuary as close to the natural environment as possible with the best possible care. In particular, provide sanctuary for those animals that no-one else is prepared to care for, e.g. the sick and disabled. They aim to rescue those animals who have suffered at the hands of humans, rehabilitating and releasing where possible, and caring for those who are unable to be returned to the wild. Educating people, particularly children, to stop cruelty to animals, is another key aim, and in particular campaign against the illegal trade in wild animals for the pet industry and discourage the use of animals for entertainment, for example in performing animal shows. This education now takes on a new form with the recent introduction of full and half day tours of the centre. The tours are suitable for the whole family, and incorporate seeing recovering animals, helping to feed them and learning both how these and other animals have been mistreated and what the foundation does to help them. WFFT also promotes the prevention of hunting and highlights conservation of all natural resources, fauna and flora alike. WFFT also cooperates with and assists the Royal Forestry Department and other organizations concerned with the rescue and conservation of wild animals. Currently the WFFT runs several projects from hands-on wildlife rescue, medical care, wildlife rehabilitation, research on wildlife and marine mammals as well as the release of wild animals back to the wild. The Centre is built on temple land; the abbot of the Kao Look Chang temple generously gave a huge plot of forest for the animals to live in. having your cake and eating it too Janet Street Porter is one of those great British eccentrics who people either love or hate. A journalist, author and broadcaster who doesn’t mince her words, her latest tirade is against the cup cake. On this occasion I have to agree with her, that the cup cake is a ‘lump of cacky fattening sponge with something sickly sweet on top’, although Ms Street Porter has clearly never encountered Thai cakes, which must run a very close second in the sickly sweet stakes. Quite how cup cakes became so fashionable is a mystery, but there seems to be no end to the variety of toppings and cup cake making equipment now available. Just recently of course there were Halloween versions in the shops, which were closely followed by Guy Fawkes and soon Christmas trimmed ones. There is a serious side to this cup cake condemnation though. Despite the ever increasing popularity of cookery programmes in the UK many people still struggle to throw a cake or a simple meal together. We watch contestants on programmes like the Great British Bake Off and Master Chef produce food which looks like works of art, with purees, jus or spun sugar arranged in gravity defying little piles on the plate. Can we replicate those dishes at home? Do we even want to? Probably not. And yet last weeks’ final of the Great British Bake Off attracted over 9 million viewers. It is claimed that the average Brit can produce only 5 dishes from scratch without referring to a cookery book, which really isn’t much to be proud of. The increase in out of town supermarkets providing ready meals and convenience foods, together with the need for more and more women to combine work and childcare, have led to a whole new way of shopping - and cooking - in the UK. The huge weekly one stop shop is the norm, which inevitably results in overspending and waste. Now Tesco, possibly as a reaction to a drop in their UK profits, has come up with some quite alarming figures on the percentage of their fresh food sales which is wasted. Two thirds of their bagged salads, 45% of bakery goods, 40% of apples, and a fair amount of bananas and grapes amongst other things are estimated to end up in landfill. But all is not lost. It is a relief to hear that Tesco will solve the problem by stopping their two for one offers on bagged salads, and by providing guidance to customers on food storage. They are accepting a tiny part of the responsibility, at no cost to themselves, while placing most of the blame for food waste firmly in the hands of their customers. There is no mention of the huge waste most supermarkets create by insisting they are supplied with perfectly uniform fruit and vegetables with which

to grace their shelves. Could all of this happen in Thailand? Even in a country where many people still buy only the food they need fresh every day, large western style supermarkets are already well established. They not only provide comfortable, air conditioned, dry places to shop, together with fairly cheap and cheerful cafes, but also the all important status which accompanies western culture. Change is inevitable, but not all change is progress. Let’s hope that however smelly they may be, those noisy, colourful Thai food markets, and the pickup trucks piled high with gluts of durian fruit, are around for many more years to come.
