golf city unprecedented media exposure expected as asian golf tour arrives

hua hin, THAILAND At a time when Thailand desperately needs some positive global exposure to counter the ongoing protests in Bangkok, Hua Hin is set to provide it as the penultimate round of the Asian Golf Tour will take place here, at the Black Mountain Golf Club from 16th to 19th January. The tournament is the King’s Cup, and a five year deal has recently been signed with the Asian Tour, although it is not know if it will always be staged in Hua Hin - however for the first time ever this month’s event will be broadcast live, over all four rounds on the Asian Tour’s global television platform which reaches over 180 countries and 640 million homes, ensuring extensive worldwide exposure for the Hua Hin, sponsors, and the Kingdom of Thailand itself. The tournament has also had it’s total prize money raised to $1 million (nearly 33 million baht), and will feature not only Hua Hin locals Prom Meesawat and Prayad Marksaeng, but also last year’s winner Arnond Vongvanij, and European players such as Swedes Johan Edfors, who won the inaugural Black Mountain Masters, Daniel Chopra and Fredrick Andersson Hed, as well as German Alex Cejka. In total there are 144 players taking part, and there will be local expat interest in Scotsman Simon Yates who lives in the area. The extensive media coverage will undoubtedly raise the profile of Hua Hin further, as both a top tourist and golfing destination and it must be hoped that this offsets to some extent the reported falling tourist arrivals in Thailand. Tee times were not available at press time, but more information on the event can be found on the Asian Tour website www.asiantour.com/ tournaments/74/ and details of the Black Mountain course on their website www.blackmountainhuahin.com.

stories ring in the new By Roger Norwood There has been a lot of media chatter in recent weeks about the possibility of a civil war breaking out in Thailand, although many of the long term expats I have spoken to have dismissed the possibility, normally based on what they have seen happen here before. Some however think that this time it is different and more serious than before, while there are some commentators predicting that the nation will divide into two separate entities. For those of us living in the Hua Hin area though there does seem to be a rather detached view of things, because of a couple of things; firstly the distance we are from the protests and any likely battlegrounds, and

tell your tales in thai with fun and easy tutoring

Don’t Be Tongue Tied! Fun, Easy and Affordable 1-on-1 Private Thai Lessons 080 321 5889 kamonphan.m@gmail.com

secondly because of the status of the area due to the royal connection - I don’t think anyone imagines that any Thais would want to show any disrespect in the home of the moarch. There definitely seems to be an impasse at present between the protesters and their opposition - the protests go on and the politicians show restraint while the red shirt supporters seethe at the injustice, making comparisons to their long protest and its outcome, Personally I think i side with the old hands as to the possibility of large scale fighting - t I think that it is likely to be quashed very quickly, and in the way that is most common here - a coup by the army. It won’t solve the problem but it will bring

some kind of temporary order. Ultimately the Thais will find a way to appease everyone so that no one loses face and everybody gets something, and an uneasy truce will break out. This seems to be the way these things happen here, and all the more likley because according to one recent report, less than a quarter of the population are strongly in support of either side in this dispute, leaving a large majority who want it all to go away. By this time next week we might well know how this could pan out, with the proposed Bangkok blockade taking place on 13th January. If you have to go to Bangkok, stay safe, and I’ll see you next week!

malaysia Found ’em at a cow boot… Escape plan foiled after crooks stuff cattle in car In hindsight, it was never going to work as a getaway car. Thieves hoping to disappear with their ill-gotten gains should have thought twice before they filled a family saloon with… four stolen cows. Their botched bovine heist was abandoned a few miles from the scene of the crime when the Proton Wira buckled under the weight of the beasts. ‘They managed to drive away from the farm they’d stolen them from but broke down a short distance away,’ said Chin Soo Song, deputy police chief of Bukit Mertajam, Malaysia. After using a blowpipe to tranquillise the cows, the rustlers loaded one animal into the boot and squeezed the other three into the rear over fold-down seats. One crook took the wheel while two accomplices made their getaway on motorbikes. scotland Off his trolley: Man sentenced after trying to have sex with a buffet cart A train traveller who had devoured a cocktail of legal highs and alcohol was arrested after trying to have sex with a drinks trolley. Andrew Davidson was seen humping the trolley while shouting ‘I want to kiss you, I want to f*** you’.

Before he foisted himself upon it, he had placed his hands on a female passenger and attempted to kiss a member of staff. According to fiscal dispute Jim Eodanable, he also fell on to his face and began rubbing his chest, sticking his tongue out and yelling about what he wanted to do to his boyfriend. The 25-year-old’s behaviour was so distressing for the crew member that she ran off the train at the next stop. His baffling tryst with the trolley, on a Friday afternoon in July, happened as a ScotRail service travelled from Aberdeen to Glasgow. During an earlier hearing in November, the Scotsman admitted causing fear and alarm, as well as behaving in a threatening or abusing manner. At Perth Sheriff Court this week, Davidson, from Angus, was placed on community payback and ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work. However, he was taken off the sex offenders’ register because the sexual element of the case was not deemed to be significant. Davidson’s solicitor, Grant Bruce, said: ‘He has no recollection of what happened on the train at all but accepts he behaved in this manner. He was completely intoxicated by alcohol and a legal high. He has now curtailed his social life to a great degree because of this incident. It is something that has never happened before and is unlikely to ever happen again.’

SERVED UP BY...

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... I haven’t got a clue Without any knowledge or understanding. This little phrase, which is often given as ‘I don’t have a clue’, doesn’t at first sight appear to be idiomatic at all and hardly deserving of investigation. After all, a clue is an insight or idea that points us towards a solution. To be without a clue is simply to be ignorant. However, a clue (also spelled clew) previously had a different meaning - a globular ball formed from coiling worms or the like or, more specifically, a ball of thread. Clew has been used with that meaning for at least a thousand years and citations of it in Old English date back to 897AD, when no less an author than Aelfred, King of Wessex used it in his West-Saxon translation of Gregory’s Pastoral Care. Shakespeare also used the word with the ‘thread’ meaning, for example, in All’s Well that Ends Well, 1602: “If it be so, you have wound a goodly clewe.” That seems a long way from crossword clues or Sherlock Holmes’ stories. How did we get from a ball of thread to the current meaning of clue? Go back to Greek myth and recall the tale of Theseus and the Minotaur. Theseus entered the labyrinth to kill the half-man, half-bull Minotaur. He did so but was only able to find his way out by retracing his path, marked by the string given to him by Ariadne. So, Theseus ‘had a clew’ about the safe route out of the maze and was able to escape. Geoffrey Chaucer recorded this story in The Legend of Ariadne, Part VI of The Legend of Good Women, 1385: Therto have I a remedie in my thoght, By a clewe of twyn as he hath gon, The same weye he may returne a-non, ffolwynge alwey the thred as he hath come. So, don’t be clueless - all you need is some string.

A bonus origin this week, with the phrase ‘If wishes were horses, beggers would ride’. This proverb is recorded in English from quite an early date. A version of the expression appeared in the published works of William Camden in the 17th century. Camden was an interesting character; a historian and one of the select few who could write ‘Herald’ as his job description. He was one of three senior heralds of the College of Arms under Queen Elizabeth I. In 1605, Camden collected together his miscellaneous notes on English and Classic history and published them under the title The Remaines of a Greater Worke Concerning Britain. He didn’t put his name to the work and dismissed it as “the rude rubble and out-cast rubbish… of a greater and more serious worke”. The book was republished in several versions and included this proverb: If wishes were thrushes, then beggers would eat birds Acquiring thrushes has now somewhat gone out of fashion as an aspiration of beggers. However, if eating thrushes is your thing, Camden is your man. It is clear that the ‘horses’ and ‘birds’ versions are essentially the same proverb. Other 17th century versions also exist, including ‘if wishes were buttercakes, beggers might bite’, which was recorded in John Ray’s A Collection of English Proverbs, 1670. The first known citation of the proverb in the form we now know it is in James Carmichaell’s Collection of Proverbs in Scots: If wishes were horses, beggers wald ryde. The date of Carmichaell’s work is unclear but it does appear to have been published in his lifetime and he died in 1628. Whether it was Carmichaell or Camden who first recorded the proverb is currently uncertain. Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? fat is a political issue Political correctness continues this week with muffin tops, bingo wings and thunder thighs. All terms our women readers will be familiar with, even those who don’t identify with them personally. Have you noticed how Thai people can make the word ‘pompoey’ sound almost complimentary? ‘Aaah, pompoey’ they say with a smile, while gently patting a farang beer belly. And of course they don’t really mind that extra bit of fat at all, or mean any offence, because it is a sign that the farang can afford to eat well. In the UK however, once we have left the playground taunts behind, we avoid using the word ‘fat’ altogether when talking to people, even our best friends. We don’t call people ‘skinny’ to their faces either. In fact even when we are worried about a friends’ weight and appearance we find it very difficult to broach the subject at all. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t recognise those bits of our own bodies which are beginning to swell, sag, or flop around. Of course we do, and we are quite capable of referring to our own bingo wings and muffin tops in company, and deciding for ourselves whether or not we can be bothered to do anything about it, or just let nature take its’ inevitable course. But now our Equalities Minister (yes - we have one of those), Jo Swinson, has decided that terms like muffin top, bingo wings and thunder thighs should be banned. Liberal Democrat Ms Swinson thinks that this kind of ‘fat talk’ is depressingly commonplace, and doesn’t believe that women should be using it to insult their own bodies. She has clearly never been within earshot of my gaggle of friends when we are in our favourite real ale bar in Hull of a Wednesday evening. Swigging back pints of Great Newsome while comparing the sorry state of our

feet, (crows’ as well as those at the ends of our legs,) and discussing whether we are getting a bit too crepey to risk a lower neckline, or how we just couldn’t wear that sleeveless number without a pashmina. We are not insulting our own bodies, (although we reserve the right to do so if we wish,) simply being realistic. Coincidentally Jo Swinson, who also runs an all party group on body image, did once work in Hull for a local radio station, and stood against our very own tubby John Prescott in a 2001 election, stealing 6% of his Labour constituency voters. Not enough to rock the boat of course, but she went on to take a Scottish Lib Dem seat in the 2005 General Election, becoming the then youngest ever Member of Parliament. She is a good looking, very successful, well educated woman, who appears to be of average size and shape, has apparently survived childbirth without any noticeable ill effect, and can clearly afford to be well groomed. You have to wonder what qualifies her to speak so vehemently about the need to promote positive body image in women, so that they can increase healthy behaviour and become more successful. Yes, there have been some dangerous precedents set by the trend for ultra thin catwalk models and celebrities. Young people are impressionable, and some do become ill in their attempts to look just like their role models. But is banning a few commonplace words going to change that? Or would it be more productive to try to change the habits of those parents who constantly undermine the confidence of their tiny children by swearing and screaming abuse at them in public.

Eat in or Takeaway 081 455 5298 Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 A freak electrical fire will break out at a nearby hospital this week, expanding the facility’s burn ward tenfold. Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 Though you will mean to tell a group of friends about the appetizing sirloin steak you had for lunch, a Freudian slip this week instead reveals your torture of four teenage girls in an old abandoned shack. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 Check with Pisces in two weeks for a more detailed and accurate prediction of next week’s events. Aries Mar 21 – Apr 20 A collection of self-penned portmanteaus, the construction of which you’ve always thought rather clever, will offend hundreds of biracial individuals this Thursday.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 While all may be fair in love and war, many will come out against your egregious use of nerve gas in both. Gemini May 22 – June 21 No matter how much time passes, you’ll never be able to bring yourself to forgive those who have called you unforgiving. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 You never thought you had it in you, nor that you’d have the courage to follow through even if you did, but you’ll totally surprise yourself with next Thursday’s abortion. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 You will see yourself in a whole new light this week while desperately failing to locate a single vein inside that downtown McDonald’s bathroom.

Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 A sinking sense of your own mortality will set in this week after you completely fail to recognize a Simpsons rerun on television. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 The alignment of the stars and the planets can only mean one thing this week: You’re looking at a very simplistic, two-dimensional model of our solar system. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 Badly hurt and in crippling pain, you will see the last 12 seconds of your life flash before your eyes this week. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 You’re nervous, your palms are sweaty, and your stomach is full of knots, but don’t worry: Chances are she’s feeling the exact same first-date-rape jitters as you.

Saturday 11th January 2014 PREMIER LEAGUE Cardiff v West Ham 22:00 A relegation six pointer if there ever was one, this game sees under pressure manager Sam Allardyce take on the Premier League’s newest boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Given that the West ham board have given Big Sam their full backing then this isn’t a make or break game for the manager, but it is for the team. We can’t see anything but more misery for the Hammers fans, who are calling for their manager to be sacked, mainly because of the style of play.

breaking the bank Wenger to use money thrown by Spurs fans to strengthen Arsenal squad

london, england Tight-arsed Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, will use the cash generated by Theo Walcott’s derby match taunts to strengthen his attacking options, it has emerged. As the Arsenal dynamo was stretchered off towards the end of the cup tie, Spurs fans reacted angrily to his taunting grin by emptying the contents of their piggy banks onto his head. And as news of the multi-denominational deluge reached the dugout, Wenger beckoned a steward over and asked him ‘How much are we talking about?’ After the stadium fell quiet following Arsenal’s 2-0 victory, Wenger was spotted by Match of the Day cameras prowling the touchline with a state-of-the-art metal detector. Wenger said, “It is difficult to find an English bank that will accept anything other than notes so I ‘ave transferred most of the money

Left: Arsenal got a much needed boost to their coffers

into giant whisky bottles that were left ‘ere by Tony Adams.” Although he now has a huge quantity of twopound coins to spend on players, Wenger has also found himself massively popular with North London bus drivers. The Frenchman will need to act fast if he is

to combat the club’s latest injury crisis, which was compounded this morning when Jack Wilshere turned up at an Islington A&E Unit with a saucepan on his head. While Wenger has refused to reveal the exact amount he managed to recover after Saturday’s clash, he is understood to have enough to tempt Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, with at least £5.60 left over for a haircut. The Arsenal boss is now viewing the cashin-return-for-provocative-gestures as an important part of the club’s revenuegenerating arm and has earmarked the next training session to teach Per Mertesacker how to use his fingers to make insulting gestures.
