ready to party? dance music festival hits hua hin Saturday

HUA HIN, THAILAND Young and young-at-heart music fans in the area could be in for a treat this Saturday as a festival called V Day Out is taking place at the Centennial Park in South Hua Hin, with the headliner being a first time appearance in Thailand for Spanish DJ Albert Neves, a stalwart of the Ibiza club scene. The festival aims to mix both live bands with a number of different DJ’s to create a style familiar to overseas partygoers but relatively new to Thailand. The one-day festival gets it name from “voice” meaning the singers, and “vibe” referring to the DJs, according to the organiser Bangkok Fanatix, as well as being a nod to the previous day’s Valentines Day. Local bands and DJs participating in the festival include 2 Days Ago Kid, POP, Flure, Slot Machine, G20 and DJs LonSkii, DJ April and DJ Sunzone. According to Bangkok Fanatix’s Itthi Nana, and DJ LonSkii, there will be a focus on EDM, or electronic dance music, ranging from house and deep house through to trance and hard trance. LonSkii has just returned from Australia where he had been DJing since 2005, while DJ Albert will be best known to Thai fans for his remix of David Guetta’s ‘Play Hard’ dance hit. V Day Out takes place on February 15 from 5pm to 4am, with tickets priced at 1,200 baht available at Thai Ticket Major outlets and online (call 02 262 3456 or go to www.ThaiTicketMajor.com). There is also a Facebook page at facebook.com/VdayOut.

stories awakening By Roger Norwood Events in the rest of the world seem to have diverted the world’s media gaze away from Thailand, but the issues seem to have got more and not less complicated as time wears on, with the rice farmers also up in arms over the non-payment for their rice under the ill-fated rice pledging scheme. It is quite ironic that the very people who you would imagine are the archetypal supporters of any of the political parties that have been formed and/or operated under the ‘red shirt’ banner are as unhappy with the government as all the other people who have been protesting for months, and casts some doubt as to whether the result of the election, had it gone ahead fully, would really

have been the resounding victory for Yingluck and Puea Thai that everybody was predicting. While many of the anti-government protestors have been very harsh in their assessment of the red shirt supporters, believing them to be easily bribed into voting for the Shinawatra led parties,, the protest by the farmers could indicate that they are wrong in their assertions, and, in fact, the Thai electorate is more savvy than they think. I very much doubt that the rice farmers will fall for any more rice pledging schemes, and I imagine there are quite a number of Thais who have now also seen through the new car purchase scheme that in the long run may ultimately have a lasting detrimental effect on both

new and second hand car markets. Most Thais of whichever colour shirt are accustomed to politicians letting them down, but at the same time there is almost an admiration for them working the ‘system’ to their own personal advantage, rather than the seething anger and contempt many of the public have towards their politicians in the developed nations. Will recent events change how Thais view people in power? Maybe not in the immediate future but I think this is the thin end of the wedge, and I expect authority figures to be given a much harder time in the future than they have become used to.

sochi, russia Sochi viewers resort to schoolboy humour as amusingly named athletes compete Winter Olympics fans have found yet another source of humour in Sochi’s 2014 games – this time in the names of athletes. Russian luge competitor Semen Pavlichenko and German ski jumper Andreas Wank are particular favourites amongst those taking to Twitter to express their amusement. ‘I hope the ski jumper called Andreas Wank comes first,’ was the joke many opted for in reference to the ski jumper, with one Twitter user pointing out the ‘delicious irony that Andreas Wank partakes in the only skiing event you don’t have a pole in your hand’. ‘Just seen a Russian luger called Semen, and now a German ski jumper called Andreas Wank. I love the Winter Olympics,’ wrote another viewer watching at home. The Sochi games have been the subject of much controversy because of Russia’s human rights record and owing to the fact many of Sochi’s hotels were unfinished by the time and athletes and broadcasting teams arrived. During the opening ceremony, a graphic depicting the five Olympic rings appeared to malfunction, with one of the rings failing to open fully.

Scarborough, england Penguins given antidepressants after recent bad weather upsets them Penguins in a British sanctuary are so fed up with the miserable winter weather they are being given antidepressants. Wild Humboldt penguins are used to withstanding inhospitable weather in the coastal areas of South America, but those living in captivity in Scarborough are struggling with the constant wind and rain lashing the country. Staff at the Sea Life Centre there have become so concerned they have started to administer the medication as a pick-me-up. The centre’s display curator Lyndsey Crawford said: “Humboldts in the wild on the coast of Peru and Chile can be subjected to some pretty wild extremes of weather. What they don’t get though is weeks of almost daily downpours and high winds. After the first week our birds were just a bit subdued, but after over a month now, they are thoroughly fed-up and miserable, much like the rest of us.” According to staff, misery can lower the penguins’ natural defences even more easily than in humans, and they hope the “uppers” will head off any more serious symptoms. “They’re doing the trick so far, but we are all praying for the weather to change and at least a few successive days of sunshine to give them the tonic they really need,” said Crawford.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... To kowtow to To accept the authority of another; to act in a subservient manner. The meaning of ‘to kowtow to’ is familiar to many, but few know how the expression originated. ‘Kowtow’ (and, in case you’ve not come across it before, kowtow is pronounced to rhyme with ‘cow’ + ‘how’) is an odd word and, for no better reason than the sound of it, many think it might have something to do with cows. Apparently not. ‘Kowtow’ sounds odd to our ears because it is a Chinese word. To kowtow is to kneel and touch the ground with the forehead as an act of worship or submission. The practice first came to the attention of the Englishspeaking world late in the 18th century, when westerners began to visit China. The word is an Anglicised version of the Chinese ‘kētóu’, which derives from ‘kē’ (knock’)+ ‘tóu’ (head). The British explorer Sir John Barrow was well placed to observe kowtowing at first hand. In 1792 he was appointed as an aide to Viscount Macartney, the British ambassador in Peking. Barrow subsequently wrote Travels in China, 1804, in which he was the first to explain kowtowing to the west: The Chinese were determined they should be kept in the constant practice of the koo-too, or ceremony of genuflexion and prostration. There were several degrees of kowtowing, depending on the difference in rank of the participants, the highest level requiring a full face down prostrate pose with arms held wide. Macartney was given his £15,000 a year job as ambassador to head a trade mission to negotiate a deal between Britain and China. In 1793 he was presented to Emperor Qianlong, or ‘son of heaven’ as he preferred to be called, but the viscount pointedly refused to perform the obligatory kowtow. To the disbelief of the aghast

Chinese court, Macartney would only go down on one knee, as he would to the British ruler. This event was recorded by the satirical cartoonist Gillray. Qianlong left in a huff, the trade mission was abandoned and Macartney was sacked. Prices in the UK have increased about 500 times since 1793. Macartney might have felt that he had retained his dignity but, had he known it was going to cost him a £7.5 million a year job, he might have thought that a quick kowtow would have been prudent. the drunks Three drunk guys entered a taxi. The taxi driver knew that they were drunk so he started the engine and then turned it off again a short time later. The taxi driver said, “We have reached your destination”. The first guy gave him money and the second guy said “Thank you”. The third guy slapped the driver. The driver was shocked thinking that the third drunk knew what he did. But then he asked, “What was that for?” The third guy replied, “Control your speed next time, you nearly killed us!” Valentine’s day Hey guys.... Daily, weekly or long term modern relationship Daddy, how was I born? ‘Well, son, Your Mum and I first got together in a chat room on Yahoo. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your Mum and we met at a cyber-cafe. We sneaked into a secluded room, and Googled each other. There your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall, and since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later a little Pop-Up appeared that said: ‘You’ve got Male!” life I think pregnancy test kits are a brilliant idea. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas

a living language Some time ago I talked about how hard it must be for Thai people to learn English. In fact with all it’s tenses, double meanings, and wildly inconsistent application of plurals, I wonder how we ever managed to learn it ourselves. Then remembered that back in the day my generation (and many before us) learned English in pretty much the same way as Thai people still do. By rote. We sat in primary school at our little double wooden desks with those flip up bench seats attached to them. Two pupils per desk. An inkwell either side of the twin desk, and little grooves along the top to rest pencils and pens in. The desk lids sloped down towards us and were covered with the scratched initials of long gone pupils. Wood beading across the bottom edge of the sloping lids often failing to keep our bits of paper in place. But enough reminiscing. The point is that we learned much of our own language by sitting there and writing out and reciting the words, together with their appropriate plurals. Followed by the past and future tense of each word, together with appropriate plurals. Having completed that groundwork we went on to construct sentences which contained the correct tenses - and plurals. It was no doubt all very tedious. But if it was, that tedium was long forgotten as we progressed into High School with a basic command of English, only to spend the next five years tackling the finer points of punctuation - and yet more words - before moving into the world of work, where we found that an awful lot of other words existed as well. Technical stuff. Jargon. Abbreviations. Even symbols for some words, like ‘@’. In fact I still associate ‘hash’ with the medical shorthand for ‘fracture’, or a symbol meaning ‘number’, and can’t quite understand how it progressed into IT speak. I don’t know how English is taught in UK schools now, but hear nasty rumours about spelling not being too important. Certainly txt spk isn’t helping the situation either, yet all the time new words are finding their way into our dictionaries, and all the time we continue to come across words which, though maybe not new, we have never heard before. The point is we never stop learning. So just for fun we’ll take a quick look at one new - or not so new - word every week, beginning with ‘kitchenalia.’ Not a tricky one to understand, this word only hit the Oxford Dictionary sometime during the last 9 years. Before that it was ‘kitchen ware.’ Its’ conversion to an ‘alia’ was probably linked with the increasing interest in all things collectible and antique.

The word just popped into my head one day while pottering in the kitchen, and refused to go away. Pretty much like that first song you hear in the morning, which stays with you all day. Also probably linked to a recent browse around my local Lakeland store - an upmarket and quite expensive purveyor of kitchen gadgets. The kind of gadgets which are there to look good and to drool over, but in the real world really aren’t necessary at all. The Hua Hin equivalent of Lakeland would be that kitchen utensil shop on the corner of Chomsin and SraSong Roads. A much more affordable and down to earth purveyor of gadgets which are both basic and practical, and don’t end up stored away in cupboards gathering dust as so much of our Western kichenalia does. Next week there will be another word to ponder over, but without the need for such a lengthy introduction. Which if nothing else this week has helped avoid the ever more confusing issues surrounding Thai politics.

Eat in or Takeaway 081 455 5298 Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 It’s really too bad you couldn’t have been defenestrated years ago when it was cool before everybody started using the word. Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 Although you’re beginning to despair, it’s important to square your shoulders, set your jaw, take a deep breath, and try to hit the toilet with everything this time. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 You will definitely be remembered by all people for all time, a fact that should make you feel much more shame and disappointment than it may seem. Aries Mar 21 – Apr 20 Your belief that all life’s problems can be solved with a heart-toheart talk and a good night’s sleep will be severely tested this week when you’re introduced to mathematics.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 This is a good week to start new projects, as long as they don’t take more than four days and won’t depress the people who find your body. Gemini May 22 – June 21 This week you’ll show everyone that you can be stunningly sexy at 50, which is deeply troubling as you were 27 last week. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 You’ll finally make an effort to remove your mental blinders, leaving the coroner to wonder why exactly you took the cordless drill to your temples. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 When all’s said and done, you should probably have just let those pandas succeed or fail on their own merits.

Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 You’ll finally come to understand your own heart and mind, and by extension, exactly what everyone has been laughing at all these years. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 While it’s true that life often imitates art, it’s odd that your life imitates J.G. Ballards’ avant-garde fiction piece “The Assassination Of JFK Considered As A Downhill Motor Race.” Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 The stars foresee a lesson in humility this week when you try telling everyone about the “hot new band” Animal Collective, which the stars have been listening to for like forever. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 You thought you had finally done something strikingly new and original, but it turns out that thousands of people already in the afterlife got there the exact same way you did.

Sunday 16th February 2014 THE FA CUP - FIFTH ROUND Arsenal v Liverpool 23:00 Arsenal will be keen for swift revenge after their thrashing at Anfield in the league, and we don’t think this game can possibly go the same way. However it will be close, and Liverpool will definitely have a psychological edge. Neither team will want it but we think this will be a draw, and a replay at Anfield, which we think will see Liverpool ultimately go into the hat for the quarter finals.

Scientists analysing events at Sochi said they were basically people being pulled downwards by the natural forces of gravity. Dr Mary Fisher said: “Skiing, snowboarding, bobsleigh – all just variations on falling. “In most Winter Olympics sports the human participants could be replaced with boulders or broken refrigerators – in fact anything heavy. “The only fair conclusion was to recognise the achievement of gravity rather than the toothsome rich buffoons who do snow-based sport.” Accepting handfuls of gold medals on behalf of gravity, Professor Henry Brubaker of the Institute for Studies said: “Without gravity
